Twas day one of the Festival, and all through the school
The GFC prepared for something like Yule...

  • Morning, quad: Ice carving festival
  • Afternoon, first floor main circle: School fair
  • Night, ballroom: Art show and talent show

Feel free to participate even if you didn't use the OOC signup!

[While Garden proper heads off for the festivities, the Ragnarok and its squad of noble orphan lovers crosses the mountains into Esthar, over the ruins of the OCS towards Esthar City. The transit takes no meaningful time; soon, the airship lands in the outskirts of the City, which is slowly sprawling out to become a suburb.]

[(Yes, Espio got to fly it.)]

[The orphanage is a modern-looking building that resembles a dormitory more than anything, but clearly it has some funding behind it, because the grounds it occupies are, if not huge, at least well-appointed and include a sports field and a playground. The children that come piling out look reasonably healthy and well-appointed, more like a boarding school roster than a crowd of children without family or real homes. Look closely, though, and you might see hints of the latter.]

[OOC: For now this plot is for mingling and general RP. On Monday, December 31st a second thread will be added for plot stuff, so please be sure to look at it then!]

[Midshot of Russell Drake, blonde head and shoulders in his dorm, smiling at everyone.]

Hi, everyone! I'm Russell Drake, co-leader of the Garden Festival Committee, and I have a story for you all!

once upon a time there was a GF named Shiva... )

Though originally her festival began on the Winter Solstice, with time we've become more relaxed about the date; we're pretty sure she's chill with it [russ pls], so long as it's around the end of the year. Plus, we wanted to give our fellow students some time to relax and spend time with their families.

So the GFC has prepared a special three day festival for the people of Garden! This will be held from Wednesday December 26th through Friday December 28th. [Unless a good deal of people can't make these dates? We thought people might not be moving between home and school then.]

On the first day, there will be a morning ice sculpting contest in the quad judged by Headmaster Cid's wife, Edea Kramer. Ice and tools will be provided, but use of magic, GFs, and off-world powers will also be allowed! Mrs. Kramer will be judging on both creativity and craftsmanship. This can also be an opportunity to carve the ice candleholders which Instructor Tseng tells us are traditional gifts on Gaia.

In the afternoon, we will be holding a school fair around the first floor. This will be an opportunity for students and staff to sell arts, crafts, and food of their own making, and for others to find the perfect presents for their loved ones! It will be open to the public, both for local tradespeople to sell their wares and for people to get to know our staff and students.

At night there will be an art and talent show in the ballroom, with art from all over the world being sold for charity, and the people of Garden will have an opportunity to show off their talents - and maybe those carols that SeeD Kamui is leading. This will be open to the public to admire and buy the artwork, and to experience the talents that Garden has to offer. As well as performers, we will also require volunteers to help sell the art and serve refreshments.

The second day is our day of volunteer action! We have organized four volunteer efforts which you can sign up for in the cafeteria until the festival starts:
  • Party time: A group will be going down to the Centra orphanage to throw a party for the orphans! This will involve entertaining the children with party games and costumes, and helping serve food and distribute presents donated by the public.
  • Balamb's got talent: Groups will be visiting Balamb Hospital and Balamb's retirement village to entertain the in-patients and residents. This could be another opportunity to break out those carols, or any other talents! Preferably talents that are seen as achievable here; we don't want to freak out the sick and old people during a special time of the year.
  • Paint with all the colors of the wind: Another group will be painting a mural in the Balamb township to brighten up the town! Paint and equipment will be supplied.
  • Presenting...: This group will be joining the Balamb Town Mission in putting together gift packs for the less fortunate. The Mission already has all the presents and packaging supplies; they just need some extra hands!

[OOC signups for the fair and all volunteer efforts are in this thread, though feel free to have your characters post about them, egg each other on to participate, etc.]

On the third day, us locals will be exchanging gifts. In the afternoon, there will be an open storytelling circle in the quad for people to share stories from their worlds or that you've written yourself, and there will be a feast in the cafeteria for dinner. After this, we will hold a fireworks display and release floating candles on the beach. Instructor Tseng tells us that people on Gaia also float candles in carved ice to honor the departed.

The thing is, fireworks didn't occur to us early enough for us to be able to import in the good fireworks - slow boat from Winhill and all that. But we know some of you off-worlders have some neat powers, and I bet someone could pull off cooler looking fireworks than just Thundaging something explosive, so would anyone like to put on a show? We'll have some smaller fireworks and glowsticks available for purchase, but the main attraction would be on you! Let me or another GFC member know.

On behalf of the GFC, I'd like to wish you all a festive end of year, and I hope that you participate in and enjoy our Festival.

[There is a video message, and Grell is dressed in a rather...festive attire while sitting in her room. Her two cats, Polish and Bashful (black and red, respectfully) are sitting with her, doing what cats do. Nap.]

I'm sure everyone is aware of that sticky situation we had a few weeks ago. [Oh, the puns!] But, of course, no one has given much thought to those poor little cats that roam around our beloved school! Why, I bet they're still out there, COVERED in that mess.

    Or worse!

If anyone has seen a stray in need, by all means...

DO SOMETHING YOU HEARTLESS CRETANS !

[She points a black gloved finger at the screen, looking rather miffed. Nothing happened yet, sheesh!] If you were in such a state, someone would take pity on your pathetic LIFE!

[She composes herself, flipping back her curled locks. Just for show.]

In the meantime, I'll be out and about with my precious darlings! [She pets both her cats happily. Who knew Grell was a pet person?] Making a list, and checking it twice!

    [Waves at the screen.]

Happy Holidays~! [Grell stands and goes to the laptop to cut the video.]

    [PM for The Family]
We're spending the holidays together. No exceptions. It will only be for a day or night. Don't come empty handed.

    [ACTION]

[Grell holds a leash, attached to two cats in harnesses. She's also holding a rather long scroll in her hands and a quill. Yes, she is very much using that quill for writing.]

Let's see. Who's been naughty this year~? [Because it's far easier to start with that. And fun.] Definitely Little Miss Orange Juice.

[Gosh, what IS that girl's name again...]

    Hi everyone!

As co-leader of the GFC, I'd like to ask you all what kinds of things you would like to see in our end of year Garden Festival, be it a specific tradition from your world or something broader like a concert. This festival will be a three day celebration, so go nuts on suggestions! (We may use them in future GFC events if we can't cram them into this one.)

What we natives have planned so far is, per a local holiday honoring Shiva, mostly built around being warm and friendly to your fellow man and woman - or pony or chameleon or whatever - by giving time and money to those less fortunate or in need of a little extra help, and giving presents to our loved ones. There will be a school fair for students and staff to sell arts, crafts, and food of their own making which would make wonderful gifts, volunteer work, a feast, and a traditional release of candles on the ocean. More details will be released closer to the time!
[Ongoing poll for the dates here. We're leaning towards the 26th to the 28th as suggested outside the thread but still on that post, but can be swayed if this doesn't work for a lot of people.]

We would love to include traditions from other worlds in our festival and have a truly united celebration, so please help us help you celebrate!

[2100. Balamb has settled into position some time ago, and life continues on as normal. Galbadia Garden has mobilized, in that it's broken free of its moorings and converted to aerial mode, but the structure remains otherwise motionless. The strategy of preventing their antagonist from moving seems to be working just fine --]

[Without warning, alarm, or seeming plausibility, a sword of perhaps thirty stories height and sufficient width to do the job transfixes the mobile mercenary facility. The point plunges through the roof, just barely missing the cockpit, but smashing through a weapons classroom on the second floor and the cafeteria on the first before bursting out the bottom of the facility. It hits the ground, penetrates, and sinks who knows how far deep before friction overcomes mass. The sword stops, leaving only a profoundly deep and disquieting humming as it continues to vibrate with the force of the descent.]

[Balamb's motive engines whine and screech as the helmsman attempts to move the facility, but only a horrific rending sounds as more of the structure crumbles. All the engines can do is shove the building into the sword, not move the weapon.]

    [All is horrified silence.]

[In that moment, Galbadia Garden completes the motion it had begun just as the sword descended, and strikes. By flying transport and by motorcycle jumps, troops cross the gap between the two Gardens, while on the first floor, a massive deployment tube crashes through the wall of the garage and troops pour in.]

[It's going to be one of those days.]

[The stopover at Fishermans Horizon takes maybe two minutes, total.]

[One moment, the Garden is slowing to a halt -- the next moment, the dock latches hiss into their closed position, the ramp into town is secured against the second-floor exit, and the SeeDs are being gestured out the door and into action. In the same moments, in a flurry of action, a hatch deploys on the side of the floating citadel and a transport boat steams out to position itself at the ladder just next to the Garden's dock. The Ragnarok swoops gracefully through the air to land in the center of the city, while down in the train station, traffic has come to a brief halt while an engine waits at full steam, quivering with anxiety.]

[No sooner do the teams touch ground than each receives a small package, easily tucking into a medium belt pouch or pocket. No words are wasted; the SeeDs receive only a cursory nod from the waiting townsfolk before they hurry back into work. The hatch shuts, the latches disengage, and Balamb drifts away, picking up speed as it does.]

[The recording starts on the quad, on a closeup of Mikuru.]

Hello, Garden! I just graduated to SeeD [and she still looks surprised by this], which means it's time for me to step down as leader of the Garden Festival Committee. I'll be leaving you in the very capable hands of Zainah Coppell and Russell Drake, so please support the GFC's new co-leaders as much as you supported me!

[She bows her head to the camera and steps off-frame, allowing Zainah and Russell to try and cram in front of the laptop. They're not entirely successful, and keep cutting off part of either one's head. Still, Zainah looks almost as happy as if she'd just won the lottery.]

I can't even tell you how much of an honor this is.

I can: Garden, it is an honor to be appointed co-leader of the GFC with the... charming Ms. Coppell.

Thanks, Russ. As co-leaders we intend to keep on bringing you fun social events and be a voice for cadets in Garden, so we welcome any suggestions!

We also welcome new members, as our team's a little small right now! Cadets at all points of your education and from all worlds [he's very carefully not looking at Zainah] are welcomed. Just let us know at any time.

[Similarly, Zainah is very carefully not looking at Russell.] We'd like to thank Mikuru for giving us this position, and once again, Garden, we hope we have your continued support!

[As Zainah reaches forward to switch the webcam off, Mikuru, still off-screen, says, very faintly, "You're welcome."]

There's a certain festive energy through the air, the source coming from the Ballroom cheerily decorated located on the second floor.

At exactly 2100, as soon as the dinner rush ends, the Garden chime sounds and the intercom clicks on. The Headmaster speaks to the Garden.]

The Graduation Ball is now beginning. Your attendance is requested at [2F] Ballroom.

I repeat, the Graduation Ball is now beginning. Your attendance is requested at [2F] Ballroom. The dance will run until 2400. Students leaving the ball after curfew are to return to their dorms immediately.

Also, Garden will be disembarking from Lake Obel at 1000 hours tomorrow for our return to Balamb continent, so please remain on campus tomorrow morning. The new quarter will start on Monday. I hope you've enjoyed your break!

[After the announcement, the intercom falls silent. The faint sound of upbeat orchestrations can be heard from the second floor of the building. In the second floor ballroom, the Headmaster, Garden faculty, and even some of the instructors are present, so troublemakers are free to roam until 2400. Caterers roam, offering drinks and refreshments to the party goers; a stationary stand for punch and food is also offered.]

(Mod note: You may participate in the dance in comments to this post, or opt to make your own new post or log.

The dance is not mandatory (though it is strongly recommended that newly graduated SeeDs attend), so students that choose not to attend won't be punished.

Newly graduated SeeDs are required to wear their uniforms. Otherwise, the occasion is black tie. All inhabitants of Garden are welcome to the festivities.

Should players have any questions left unanswered, feel free to ping the mods via PM.)

[Under the radar just a tiny bit this time had been the announcement of who the SeeDs to assist in the exam were to be. After the announcement SeeDs Lina Inverse and Espio had been given their mission briefing. The candidates for the exam, on the other hand, would only be briefed on the day, and had two days to prepare.

[Finally, the day to prove that they too could be the pride of Balamb Garden was here.]

[It had taken some time, but after enough tinkering and watching others, Rin has finally figured out how this technology works. Which is a step in the right direction, right?]

Ugh. How do you people stand this place? It is just absolutely disgusting inside out, no one seems to take any kind of manners about this place and no one seems to believe you if you tell them you deserve some form of respect. I was AM still a princess, the next in line to become ruler of the Yellow Country and yet no one around here believes a word of it! I do not appreciate being talked down to as if I am some kind of child who has not a clue as to how the world works, I have studied and I have seen things that many have not seem. I am a capable ruler and am a capable member of the royal family, I do not appreciate being treated in any different manner!

And this... this gallivanting about the place is absolutely ridiculous and uncalled for, if one is here to learn, then they should do everything in their ability to get out of here as soon as possible with all the information necessary. Instead people are leeching off the system like common beggars and making the rest of us seem just as bad. Disgusting. Absolutely and undeniably disgusting.

[The quad's all set up for the date auction! A handsome-looking blonde guy - one of the native cadets on the GFC - is center stage with the list and a mic, auctionees (and Headmaster Cid, sipping on a drink supervising) ready behind him. (Alas, Pinkie is out campaigning or something, and Mikuru is doing some last minute work elsewhere and doesn't like the stage anyway.)

    [He flashes a smile.]
Gooooood afternoon, ladies and gentlemen and everyone else! I'm Russell Drake from the Garden Festival Committee, and I'd like to welcome you all to the GFC's second charity date auction! Once again all proceeds will be going towards the Centra orphanage, so please be generous with your bids! Bids start at 1 gil and we do not take rain checks or IOUs!

We have a fantastic bunch of volunteers for your dating pleasure today, so without further ado, let's get started!

  • Each person has their own thread. Please put your bids in the subject lines so people can see them! Threads collapse after fifty comments, so using the subject lines will make the bids easier to see.
  • Bids close and winners will be posted on Friday before the carnival post goes up. IC-ly, the winners will be announced Wednesday afternoon.
  • If you missed signups, PM [personal profile] wrmods and we'll squeeze them in as an IC "saw the auction on the day, hopped onstage and harassed the GFC to auction them off" auction. Just characters who would willingly sign up at this point, please!

[So, fun fact: One of those three girls? Is actually on the GFC. The youngest-looking one, who hasn't done the field exam yet. She's got a smirk smile on for this BBS video broadcast, which Mikuru's asked her to do for the GFC.]

Hey, Garden! This is Zainah from the Garden Festival Committee with some exciting announcements for Homecoming.

Once again, we'll be running a date auction in the quad on Wednesday at lunchtime. [This will be forward-dated by a day to allow for bids to taper off in time for the carnival.] Members of the student body and staff will be auctioned off for dates, with proceeds going to the Centra Orphanage. Signups will be held in the cafeteria until Tuesday. If you want a hot date for Homecoming, save up your money!

The GFC will also be holding signups for carnival booths until Thursday, including but not limited to the dunk tank, the kissing booth, the food booths, and a talent quest. [Her smile becomes a little forced.] At the food booths, you're... encouraged to share the food of your home... lands! [There, "homelands" could be talking to the natives from other countries! Y'ALL OFF-WORLDERS WILL PROBABLY POISON US ALL.] As for the talent quest, you'll perform at the carnival, and the winners, as judged by Headmaster Cid and Commander Zabala, will get to perform at homecoming.

As with the host and hostess clubs this last Valentine's Day, we'll be asking for your Garden ID for all date auction, booth, and talent quest signups. Blame your friends who signed you up for stuff you didn't want to do last year.

And remember to vote for Zakari Aetherun for Homecoming Prince!

[Yeah, that was a distinct lack of explicit snide comments about off-worlders... This is to natives as well! And Zainah takes the GFC seriously.

[Through the week, GFC members man a table with a large sign:
SIGN UPS FOR HOMECOMING EVENTS! Cadets are taking volunteers for the date auction, the dunk tank, the kissing booth, the food booths, the talent quest, and other booths, carding people to check they're who they say they are. (Of course, things could get hectic and the kids could get too distracted to check IDs...) Food booth volunteers are also asked to provide the kind of food they'll be contributing, or may sign up to sell cotton candy, snow cones, and/or funnel cake (machinery, ingredients, and a quick tutorial will be provided); talent quest entrants are asked their talent.

[Date auction signups will close on Monday, with the auction being posted on Tuesday and occurring IC-ly on Wednesday; winners will be posted on Friday before the carnival post goes up. We realize this is very short notice and very tight scheduling, so if you miss out on the signups, just drop us a PM and we can slot them in as an IC last minute signup.

[Carnival booth and talent quest signups will be gathered on Thursday afternoon and booth volunteers will be informed of their shift time Thursday evening. This will be a handwaved thing, but they will definitely have time to enjoy the carnival instead of being stuck behind a booth the whole time.

[If you have any suggestions for other booths that require volunteer signups, comment here!]

Homecoming is a travesty. I can't believe we didn't get nominated!

You would have made a great Homecoming Queen - and I would have been a better Princess than any of those off-worlders!

I know! Oh, honey, [she directs this at the last girl, who's been hiding a bit of a smile] I feel so sorry for you, having to work with one of them as the GFC leader.

[Looks like someone wasn't expecting that, but she recovers quickly.] What? Oh, yeah. It's awful! And now she's nominated for Princess...

At least she's human! Two of those King and Queen nominations - ugh!

I really can't believe there's only two of our people nominated for the entire Court.

And they're off-worlder lovers at that - but they're the best we've got!

[Yeah, that campaign material they're putting up? RINOA HEARTILLY FOR HOMECOMING QUEEN and ZAKARI AETHERUN FOR HOMECOMING PRINCE.]

[MOD NOTE: This is part of our homecoming event which will continue on through August. Remember, Homecoming Queen and King is reserved for SeeDs while Prince and Princess are for cadets.
