What is it? We buy a gift, and then what happens? I know what secrets are, but Santa is new to me.

The short version is a bunch of people sign up, I'll put everyone's names in a hat and you get assigned someone to buy a gift for. Then you go out and buy something for them, and leave it somewhere for them to find it. Depending on the group, you either keep who you gave a gift to a secret, or tell them at the end of the month. I'm sure there's other ways to do it too, but that's how we did it in high school.

And Santa's this awesome old guy who gives you presents, hence the Santa in secret Santa.

Hold on there, skipper, you need to know who your shopping for before you go out and buy something. Well, I mean I guess you could just buy something blind, but I personally find it more fun to try to figure out what the other person might like.

What is "secret santa"? I have never heard of this.

It's an Earth custom that people do around Christmas. Basically people all sign up, and they gt someone else to buy a gift for and a spending limit so no one goes too overboard or gets really cheap and you try to buy a gift for the person, regardless of whether or not you know them, and depending on who runs it you also try to keep your identity a secret too. It's a personal thing.
