A couple of days after Garden Master Laguna's first order, preparations for war are well underway wherever one looks, and many a non-combat or medical instructor is excusing cadets who claim they are helping with the war effort.

All throughout the building, building checks and last minute repairs are still underway, and the Garden Master himself is out and about and ready for a chat.

In the training center, some people have taken to offering free spar sessions. Sometimes instructors and SeeDs can be found offering fighting tips to the less experienced.

For those who would rather train against monsters, the Fire Cavern is open and supervised. It's a good place to draw Fire and Thunder spells, too.

The infirmary is offering first aid refresher crash courses and small medpacks to bring into battle. They also need help making said packs and sorting their hastily purchased supplies.

Speaking of supplies, the 2F supply rooms, normally only entered for missions and relevant classes, are doing an inventory of the weapon and spell stocks still available after the Battle of the Three Gardens. Magic stocks are being topped up by refining spells from other items.

Considering someone used a carrier vehicle in said Battle, people are also checking all of Garden's vehicles in the garages (as well as the small fleet of boats kept at Balamb Harbor). Mechanics would be much appreciated.

Though several of the lesser trained cadets have been pulled out of school by their parents following the declaration of war, those left are being subjected to evacuation and lockdown drills in the dorms.

[Among the murmurs of strange localized weather conditions around Garden and crying over vanished hotdogs, some of the SeeDs, staff, and older cadets are looking worried, their heads together in discussion and newspapers in their hands. Some people have left clippings of two different articles around Garden, and around lunchtime, native cadet Dominique Krefft (Mean Trepie #2) takes the liberty of typing them up and posting it on the BBS:]

President Loire Suffers Cardiac Arrest; Defense Minister Named Acting President

Esthar President Laguna Loire, hero of the Sorceress War and president of Esthar for forty years, suffered a heart attack which rendered him comatose yesterday, appointing Defense Minister Raguel Stern as acting president before collapsing.

The news came as a shock to government staffers, opposition leaders, and Esthar citizens alike, as despite his advancing age, President Loire has always been given a clean bill of health during annual examinations. Preliminary reports blame a heart attack brought on by the stress of a high-stakes political meeting between Loire and several political leaders known to oppose his pro-offworlder stance, including Stern, World First party leader Damokt Gold, and General Sierna Strom.

"Unfortunately, while negotiating with President Loire on certain key platform elements, he collapsed and began writhing," General Strom said at a press conference held in the president's manor, where she and the other leaders remained to ensure a smooth transition of power. "I regret that we all believed President Loire was simply being himself to avoid a serious discussion, which delayed our efforts to seek treatment for him until we realized his condition was serious." When questioned about her black eye and reports that she had been treated for injuries, General Strom replied that, "President Loire continued to thrash for the duration of the event, striking me several times as we attempted to restrain him to perform first aid."

According to the statement released by Acting President Stern, President Loire regained consciousness just long enough to name him as acting president, and state his own intent to retire, before collapsing. No hospital responded to queries seeking the location of President Loire and his current condition is unknown.

Esthar Declares War on Balamb Garden

The nation of Esthar has declared war on the independent state of Balamb Garden.

One of Acting President Raguel Stern's first acts as leader of Esthar was to formally sign a declaration of war, which specifically names Balamb Garden as "the enemy of the nation" and calls for its immediate surrender or destruction.

In a statement originally read on Esthar radio and consequently published in the Esthar Post, the government calls for its citizens to "take arms against the off-world Sorceresses and those brainwashed into standing by them".

It accuses Balamb Garden of plotting to take over the world in these times of chaos and appeals to the international community to condemn its support of off-worlders and use of child soldiers.

Despite the conciliatory nature of President Loire's government towards the SeeD forces, anti-off-worlder sentiment has risen in Esthar since Balamb Garden forcibly acquired Galbadia Garden from Sol Invictus two weeks ago. Vlas Colban, Estharian Special Envoy to Balamb, publically spoke out against Balamb Garden after his son, a cadet at the school, was killed in the battle. This current move came as no surprise to political watchers, as Stern, World First party leader Damokt Gold, and General Sierna Strom had been meeting with President Loire to advocate this position at the moment of President Loire's collapse.

Esthar has reactivated all of its defense mechanisms such as the cloaking device hiding the nation. Train services between Fisherman's Horizon and Esthar, which have been running thrice a week since July last year, have been stopped.

The first sign of the end is a golden-yellow light. Flaring brightly from the roof of Galbadia Garden, it soars, cutting a graceful arc against the washed-out winter sky -- and then, at its apex, tears downward. The roof of Balamb Garden stands no chance; the ceiling of the ballroom below barely has time to buckle. In an eruption of metal shrapnel that clatters all the way down the outside like hail -- not to mention under the feet of any combatants still up top -- it gives way.

To the people still fighting, it's a cue. Maybe a Sol Invictus member takes it as a signal to charge; maybe a SeeD on what remains of the barricade senses the urgency and motions her allies to follow: Within minutes, both sides of the battle flood inside Balamb Garden and pour into the ballroom.

But there, the brawls, shouts, and wildly flung spells trickle to a standstill. The crowd stops, packed in too closely to fight, and blinks at the display.

At the far edge of the ballroom stands a haggard but familiar figure in a tattered sweater-vest: the missing Headmaster Cid -- and his three Sol Invictus captors. On his left, a graying leather-jacketed man holds a knife to the Headmaster's throat and another between his shoulder blades, less than an inch away from thrusting home. On his right, a burly young woman points a gun to his head, a clearly pinless grenade held with calm professionalism in her other hand. The third of the trio, a woman covered from her neck down in tarnished chain mail, hasn't laid a hand on the Headmaster yet, but only because both of hers are clasped together and crackling furiously with power; anybody who steps inside the translucent but hotly glowing sphere around her, her compatriots and their hostage will find themselves suddenly seized with electrical current and violently flung aside. The message is unambiguous: try anything and the Headmaster will die.

And in the middle of the ballroom is the main spectacle, from which few onlookers from either SeeD or Sol Invictus can seem to tear their eyes away: the scrape and clash of sword against giant sword, the same blaze of gold suffusing the air -- Ien, the leader of Sol Invictus himself, bearing down on Commander Erlea Zabala with his daiklave flashing through her defensive stance like a sunbeam.

[Balamb Garden is built on the principles of defense. Galbadia Garden is built on the principles of speed. The latter has, historically, inevitably succeeded on its assaults on the former because of one simple principle: speed beats defense. As quickly as Galbadia can maneuver, it can intercept Balamb and overwhelm it, bypassing its defenses and forcing it to battle.]

[As the two Gardens career over the southern cliffs of Trabia, those tactically-minded people with a moment to breathe might wonder why this is. Why is one Garden explicitly superior to the other? Why does one have all the advantages in a battle between the two?]

[The answer is significantly less subtle than they might think.]

[Without warning, three supremely-massive shells slam into the imposing red form of Galbadia Garden from the north, punching through its outer armor and into its depths like a hot knife thrust into a chocolate-coated cake. Several seconds later, only faintly audible over the sound of catastrophic destruction from within the Garden, a rolling boom echoes over the cliffs as the sound of the gun discharge finally catch up with the shells. Speed beats defense, but defense beats offense, which defeats speed.]

[The reconstruction efforts had been kept a strict secret, hidden under the guise of maintenance and repairs for months now -- in anticipation of just this sort of need. Three 76" guns lower slightly to accommodate for the decreasing distance between themselves and their target, then blast out another salvo of lead at the enemy-occupied Galbadia. Trabia Garden breaks the northern horizon, cannons gleaming in the sunlight and trailing smoke as the newly-mobile assault platform advances forward.]

[The crippled Galbadia Garden slams into the ground violently, kicking up a massive wave of dirt, snow, and rock in all directions as it plows a long, deep furrow through the forests. Trees snap and shatter like toothpicks, while the ground shakes and trembles like it'll never stop. Balamb Garden, its engines overstressed and its inhabitants eager for payback, drops to the ground close by as Sol Invictus members pour out of the crimson fortress, their dominance having turned to desperation in that single moment. Trabia's advancement puts a clear time limit on their efforts: if they don't conquer Balamb Garden by the time Trabia's force can join the battle on the side of SeeD, Sol Invictus loses. They know it, and so help them, they will have Balamb or die trying. The snow on the ground's not about to help them, and neither are the monsters: Not only are Balamb Garden's monsters making a bid for freedom and attacking anyone on the way, but the area's monsters - Ochu, Blue Dragons, Gayla, Snow Lions, Mesmerizes, and Bite Bugs - are getting in on the action too, some outraged by the destruction of their homes, some simply attracted by the noise.]

[The Battle of 3 Gardens has entered its second phase.]

(ooc: Trabia Garden would like to battle! This takes place in the late afternoon / early evening of January 17th, an indeterminate amount of time after Sol Invictus intercepts Balamb Garden (though at least on the order of hours); with that in mind, you are encouraged to keep tagging both there and here.

New to this phase are certain special enemies with... interesting things available to Draw on top of the usual spells, at least to whoever gets there first. However, as before, you may NPC your own SI members instead. Let us know if your character decides to Draw from any other foes on the scene - the enemies we've initially listed are not the only ones on the battlefield with unusual Draw lists! Bear in mind that this is a difficult fight, and while Trabia has turned the tables on SI's pursuit of Balamb Garden the vehicle, its individual members are coming at everyone on it with no holds barred.

Other information on this endgame plot arc continues to be available at the OOC post, which has now been updated with details on B3G Phase 2.)

[In the afternoon of the 17th, without warning, Garden lurches dramatically, rapidly swiveling on its vertical axis -- flinging unsecured items to the floor, toppling overeager students in the library and the chatting congregation in the cafeteria from their seats. An uncharacteristic whine vibrates through the first floor as the sub-basement engines spin faster, accelerating the mobile fortress along its new heading.]

[A moment later, the intercom chimes.]

This is Commander Zabala. Galbadia Garden will intercept us in around fifteen minutes. I repeat: Galbadia Garden will intercept us in fifteen minutes. In our current position, and with Galbadia Garden's advantage in mobility, we can no longer hope to outmaneuver. Nor can we hope to resolve this diplomatically. We are moving away from them as fast as we can, but they will intercept us just as we cross onto the southern Trabia coast. There, we believe they will attempt to board -- there, we will fight.

All of Garden must now prepare. Do not press the attack into Galbadia Garden. Balamb Garden is our stronghold, and we have the advantage of defenses; we can force them to withdraw through attrition. Remain aboard Balamb and inflict what casualties you can. Barricade the lobby, the second floor hallway, the ballroom, and the dorms. Junior cadets are ordered to take shelter in the dorms; senior Instructors are ordered to withdraw to the dorms and protect them to your utmost ability. Defend the hot dogs if and only if time allows. [Oh boy, she's going to catch some flak for that one.

There's an anticipatory pause.]

If Sol Invictus defeats us here, nothing and no one is left to oppose them. They know that. Make sure they do not achieve their goals.

[The intercom cuts out, and the clock's ticking.]

(ooc: Sol Invictus is on Balamb's doorstep, and they're not here for a tea party. After fifteen IC minutes, the first phase of the January 17th invasion will begin, with armed SI members pouring in seemingly without end from the main entrance and the roof. More details on this plot arc are in the OOC post on B3G.

Subthreads are provided; they are intended as loose prompts, so you are welcome to treat their locations fluidly or come up with your own scenarios / top-level comments. You may also NPC your own SI members and monsters, but bear in mind that, as the OOC post says, this is not an easy fight. Sol Invictus members are off-worlders of varying species and abilities, with training.

For those who were unaware, Headmaster Cid Kramer is currently out of office. We are unfortunately not at liberty to disclose his date of return. Please rest assured that we will provide an update when available.

Until further notice, queries intended for the Headmaster may be redirected to Ms. Olivia Smith, Dean of Academics. Note that Commander Erlea Zabala is not responsible for the academic running of Garden. We apologize for the inconvenience.

[If anyone's tried to deliver those queries in person since the malfunction of the Training Center containment field, however, they will have found the headmaster's office closed and locked.]

[Night has fallen on Balamb Garden; the halls of Garden are mostly deserted besides the stray student walking about, and even the usual faculty members are missing from their posts around the school. There's a certain festive energy through the air coming from the happily decorated ballroom located on the second floor.

[At exactly 2100, as soon as the dinner rush ends, the Garden chime sounds and the intercom clicks on. The Headmaster speaks to the Garden.]

The Homecoming Dance is now beginning. Your attendance is requested at [2F] Ballroom.

I repeat, the Homecoming Dance is now beginning. Your attendance is requested at [2F] Ballroom. The ball will run until 2400. Students leaving the ball after curfew are to return to their dorms immediately.

The ball and its festivities tonight are being sponsored very generously by the Garden Festival Committee.

[After the announcement, the intercom falls silent. The faint sound of music can be heard from the second floor of the building.

[Within the ballroom, there is a stationary stand for punch and food, as well as roaming caterers offering drinks (grape juice) and canapes.]

There is a comment thread for voting here. Votes will close on Monday night OOC-ly (or later if we don't get many votes over the weekend) and there will another thread for announcing and crowning the winners.

[There seems to be a festive atmosphere all throughout Garden. Why? Because it's the Homecoming Carnival! The Garden Festival Committee have been hard at work all morning and when 1300 hours strikes, it's finally open for everyone to enjoy.

The directory has been reprogrammed slightly:
It also has a piece of paper stuck underneath:

    Kissing booth: Turn around
Food booths: Around 1F main circle
    Triple Triad: 2F bridge
    Carnival games: Front gate area
    Chocobo rides: Road to Garden

Each stall/booth has free, more elaborate maps:
    Large image! )

    Have fun, Garden!]

Each attraction has its own thread. We've listed the people running shifts in the top comments as a reminder to those who signed up; feel free to make your character a thread for their shift even if you missed OOC signups.

Characters have different shifts which allow for everyone to enjoy other parts of the carnival as well instead of being stuck manning a booth the whole night. For the dunk tank, kissing booth, food booths, and talent quest it's best to leave your character's name in the subject of their comment to start off their thread indicating their shift/time onstage.

Proceeds will be split between further events and building and furnishing a student lounge for fun stuff, so most attractions cost money:
Kissing booth: 2 gil per kiss
Chocobo rides: 5 gil per person
Carnival games (archery, throwing/shooting X at Y, water gun race, whack a mole, skee ball, Ring the Bell, etc): 1 gil per game
Face painting: 2 gil per person
Food stalls: Snow cones 3 gil, cotton candy 3 gil, and funnel cake 5 gil; "food from your home world" up to individual characters
Dunk tank: 5 gil for 3 balls, 10 gil for 10 balls
Fortune telling: 3 gil per reading
Marriage booth: 5 gil a couple
Balloon animals: 3 gil an animal

Good morning, Balamb Garden! I'm Russell Drake, on your screens on behalf of the GFC, here to remind you all about the Garden's first beauty pageant! We'll be in the quad this afternoon bringing you uniform, formal, and swimwear modeling, a talent show, and personality questions to get to know our potential Miss and Mr. Balamb Garden. We've got quite a few signups, including most of your Homecoming nominees and the entire off-worlder population of Garden, so come on down!

[He's not going to be replying to any comments; he's gotta dash and set up the stage!]

[A small catwalk has been added to the quad's usual stage just for today. People on it might want to be careful, as it doesn't feel like the most stable of structures to walk on...

[Russell appears to be steering well clear of it, standing off to the side with a mic. What is his handsomeness doing not entering? Nobody knows.]

Good afternoon and welcome to Miss and Mr. Balamb Garden, bought to you by the Garden Festival Committee! I'm your host, Russell Drake, and our judges for this competition are Headmaster Cid Kramer and his wife, Edea Kramer, here all the way from Centra for our Homecoming festivities.

Candidates will be judged on ten point scales in three categories: Physicality, talent, and personality. Unlike Homecoming Court, this competition is not divided by position within or out of the Garden hierarchy, and winners receive a nice sash!

Without further ado, let's get this show on the road!

  • Physicality will be judged by modeling in three categories, and our first category is uniform. SeeDs and cadets will wear their dress uniforms while staff members wear whatever they wear to work - whatever you're wearing, wear it with pride! The Kramers will be looking for pressed pants, polished boots, and a professional salute!
  • On the more glamorous side of the competition, our second modeling category is formal wear. As a prelude to the glitz we expect at the Homecoming dance, our candidates will be dressed to the nines!
  • Rounding off our modeling category is swimwear! [As one GFC member unfurls a beachy backdrop and another drags a small inflatable pool onstage.] Remember, folks, it's swimwear if you can see water, underwear if you can't.
  • Next up is talent! Contestants have up to three minutes to wow us with a personal talent of theirs. Anything goes, so long as you don't hurt the audience or your fellow contestants!
  • And finally, we have the personality section, where I'll ask our candidates a question to answer from the heart. There are no wrong answers! Just give your reasons for your answer, and if you're answering with something from your home world, explain that to us too.

[Candidates have their own threads where you may respond to as many of the above bullet pointed prompts as you wish, as in the NPC examples - or if they didn't turn up, say so for the awkward silence on stage, and we will assume they will be skipped in subsequent categories! The intros given are read over their uniform modeling.]

Hey, Garden! Hope you're all enjoying the Homecoming season.

[Who's this girl greeting the webcam? Why, it's Zainah, respected treasurer of the GFC and purveyor of many a contemptuous glance at off-world cadets and SeeDs while walking past them in corridors. Today, however, there's no trace of that! School events are serious business, y'all.

...There's still something a little bit glassy about her smile, though.]

The Garden Festival Committee - that's us - has just a couple of announcements. Firstly, keep your calendars open for Friday, because the carnival is back! [And dear Hyne, you would not believe how much wrangling that took with the current states of both Garden's finances and the GFC's suppliers.] We've got a great spread of booths and games lined up for this year, and our customary date auction is set to take place in the quad in the afternoon. If you're worried about snagging a date in time for the big day, worry no longer!

Before that... [Did she just twitch?] we've got another new, exciting event waiting in the wings. Ever wanted to strut your stuff on the stage, but never had the chance? Well, Thursday's your big day, because Garden will be hosting its first ever beauty pageant just after lunch! Come and show us what you're made of!

[She doesn't sigh at the mental image of the weird, wacky monsters and sorceresses she expects to dominate the show, but she clearly wants to.]

...If you're raring to sign up for any of these, look for our sign in the cafeteria. We'll be around all week, so you can't miss us. Just remember to bring your Garden ID, as ever.

Anyway, Zainah out - oh, and don't forget to vote Helena Oster for Homecoming Princess!

    [And that's that.]

[Throughout the week, GFC members can be found manning a table in the cafeteria (blame the terrible weather recently) with a large sign: SIGNUPS FOR HOMECOMING EVENTS! As well as entrants for the beauty pageant and date auction, cadets will be taking volunteers and last-minute suggestions for booths at the carnivals. If anyone volunteers to help out at a booth, they'll be assigned a (handwaved) shift in due course - they won't have to be stuck in there all day! Also, as Zainah mentioned, the GFC will be carding people as a safeguard against fake signups, but there are only so many of them around, and it's going to be pretty hectic in there...

Beauty pageant nominations will ICly close on Wednesday, while signups for carnival booths and the date auction will close on Thursday, at which point volunteers will be informed of their shifts.]

[At 1000, the Headmaster makes an announcement on the intercom:]

Good morning, cadets and SeeDs! Today is the day you've been waiting for: the day that Homecoming Court nominees are announced. After tallying all the votes, the homecoming court will consist of the following individuals:

For Homecoming Queen: SeeD Maria Cyphert, SeeD Rainbow Dash and SeeD Grell Sutcliff.

For Homecoming King: Instructor Espio, SeeD Namur and Instructor Thatch.

For Homecoming Princess: Kory Anders, Fionna and Helena Oster [a girl you may have encountered in classes or staffing school events; she's in the GFC and one of the regular writers for the newsletter].

For Homecoming Prince: Russell Drake [yep, that handsome GFC member who does most of their BBS announcements these days], Portgas D. Ace and Douglas Thomas [a quiet cadet often seen hanging around the roof!].

Congratulations, Cadets and SeeDs! You may all now begin your official campaigns for the royal titles. Remember, the carnival will take place on November 8th and the Homecoming dance will be on November 9th, where attendees will vote for Homecoming Queen, King, Princess and Prince.

Good luck to all those running, and I hope you all have a wonderful day!

[Monday through Friday lunchtimes, a table will be set up in the cafeteria for B-Garden citizens to nominate people for homecoming court. A ballot will be given to all voters where they will put a nominee down for Homecoming Queen, Homecoming King, Homecoming Prince and Homecoming Princess. GFC members staffing the table will remind people that King and Queen are reserved for SeeDs while Prince and Princess are reserved for Cadets; nominations for other staff members will not be counted; and last year's winners (Marco, Pinkie, Ed and Mikuru) are ineligible for nomination. Happy voting!]

(Mod note: Please use the following copypasta. Comments are screened for secrecy, and will remain screened! The top three in each category will be in the running for the titles, and these will be announced next Monday. In the event of a draw, sudden death voting will be held OOC.)

[Oh hey, it's that handsome blonde guy from the GFC with the scar in his upper lip.]

Hello, citizens of Balamb Garden! I'm Russell Drake from the Garden Festival Committee, on the BBS today to announce Homecoming! For those of you who missed the last one and, like me, are from a place where homecoming isn't really a thing [the reason for the GFC's weird ideas about and timing for homecoming], it's a weekend party with a carnival and a dance where you might just win a plastic crown! [You may think he's being sarcastic about that crown, but in fact he is very earnest. Who wouldn't want a plastic crown??]

Get to know your fellow classmates and SeeDs, because next week in the quad, we'll be holding write in nominations for Homecoming Court, with SeeDs eligible for the titles of King and Queen as appropriate for their gender, and Cadets similarly eligible for Prince and Princess. They'll then have four weeks to campaign for your votes at the Homecoming Dance, which will be held on November 9th. Please note that last year's winners, SeeD Marco, Instructor Pinkie Pie, SeeD Edward Elric, and SeeD Mikuru Asahina are not eligible for nomination. Each organization may also choose their own Beaus and Sweethearts to represent them in the Court!

During homecoming week, week 6 of the trimester, we'll also be holding a date auction for those who want a little extra help getting a date for the dance, and a carnival on Friday November 8th. Yes, that means a day off school for fun, food, and entertainment! Let us know now about any stalls you'd like to see or perhaps run here; we love taking suggestions! The usual favorites such as the dunk tank, kissing booth, food stands, and talent quest will all be there; however, the Ferris wheel, bumper cars, and carousel have declined to return this year. [Alas, financial issues and unpopular political independence are not a good combination.] Personally, my favorites are the food stands - I love trying food from everyone's home worlds!

On behalf of the GFC, I'd like to wish everyone a warm welcome back to Balamb continent and the new trimester. Drake, out.

[As people panicked or smashed through their doors, or used alchemy on them, or otherwise wrecked up Garden and fled into the lobby or the halls, a few things have quickly become clear, either shouted or spread by word of mouth:]

[Garden is precariously balanced on the edge of a canyon wall -- a canyon wall that was certainly not there last night. Garden didn't move all through the night, either, so how this happened is anybody's guess...]

[Speaking of precariously balanced, we DO mean precariously. The tilting has been perceptible, but glacial, and in fact it has slowed noticeably since Rainbow Dash started pushing against the bottom of the suspected edge of Garden. On the other hand, some people removed a car and a few people from the over-land side, which has made the balance slightly worse, and so the pony is losing ground again.]

[People remain scattered in small groups within the Garden, and the power remains completely out. This is not terribly surprising; the internal generators are not particularly hardened, since normally any damage that reached them would have to go through the entire surrounding structure to get to them. Dorm rooms are beginning to light up as sunlight trickles through their windows, but the lobby and many other areas still have no light.]

[No sign of Commander Zabala or Headmaster Cid. Rumors are swirling from some of the cadets that this is another of Zabala's crazy tests.]

    [What's the plan?]

    [Thursday morning, 0559 hours.]

[Garden as a whole abruptly drops two feet.]

[The facility strikes the ground with a massive crash and shake that bears the full weight of every single one of its pounds. Loose items tumble to the floor and glass shatters in a cacophonous tumult that only serves as counterpoint to the greater and far more ominous crash of earth meeting metal. Massive vibrations race through Garden as different parts of it resonate with the force of the impact. Somewhere on the first floor, a chocobo literally screams in rage, a sound almost monstrous in its inhumanity. The lights flicker and then go out entirely.]

[Like an earthquake -- and no one would blame anyone for mistaking the source of the crash and shake, if not for the sickening drop that had yanked everyone's stomach into their throat for a heartstopping moment -- the shaking, roar, and vibrations slowly fade away, leaving only panick, fear, and disarray behind. And very ominous silence. The power has failed; the lights are out, water does not flow, and besides the residents, nothing stirs.]

[Then... slowly, but inexorably, Balamb Garden begins to tilt.]

Incongruous architecture and reports of suspicious noise around ruins recently unearthed on a Trabia farm have led the local town council to suspect off-world involvement. SeeD has been hired to provide a thorough safety assessment of the site, with an eye for potential future development.
[The town council, who hired SeeD for this mission, have supplied a check list for Namur and Maria to refer to, things like monsters, structural integrity, and other hazards. Amid whining about the overnight appearance of these ruins "DEVASTATING!!" his potato crop and some sideeying of Namur, the farmer with sudden ancient ruins on his farm has shown them to the entrance, handed them flashlights, and gone back to his work.

[The entrance is actually a small cave, half-sunken into the ground; Trabian excavators have dug up enough of the earth around it to get inside. It's dark and dusty inside, but well away from the entrance, one can start to make out what may have once been a city (note: visual guide for architectural style and atmosphere only, not layout) in the stone, about ten metres down: Crumbling walls of a blue stone not found in Trabia, ornate stone doors in the most solid-looking wall with a sign carved nearby, worn pavement in that same blue stone, the ends of clay pipes sticking out of the ground, large boulders dotted around the area.

[There happens to be a ladder down to this level, though one that's seen better days.]

[The day is a bit cloudy, and wind on the water is around eighteen knots. The harbor is bustling with townspeople and visitors. Temporary stalls have been set up selling mostly food and drink or merchandise for the three Raha Cup yacht teams.

[You might need to shove a few people to get right on the waterfront, but the view of the boats in the harbor is well worth it. Once the race begins and the boats are clear of the harbor, remote control boats are available for rental; the race is expected to take two hours.

[At the nearby Balamb Hotel, there is a large TV screen set up outdoors with seating available. Hotel staff are running an outdoor bar for the occasion.

[Throughout the area and within a couple of blocks of both the waterfront and the hotel, a combination of SeeD, Cadets, and uniformed Balamb militia and police are posted as security, in response to threats received by the town council. Normally this event only has police security, so the townspeople seem to resent the need for this increased show of force rather than the fact that they're around at all.]

(OOC: Free-for-all! Feel free to make your own threads as well as using the location threads. NPCs may hit your characters up. You may have your SeeD/Cadet character hired as security if you choose; they will be in uniform, and will be on for half hour shifts so they have time to enjoy the event as well.)

[Time Compression, in its purest form -- a tangled ball like a naked singularity, where space and time are points rather than dimensions, and no standard laws of reality apply.]

[The Gate of Truth: a portal between this world and another, the means by which alchemical energy comes into this world, capable of separating those who cross it into body, mind, and soul.]

[Mixing the two might have been a bad idea.]

[From a circle on the ground in the very depths of Tears Point, a yawning void opens. From it pour hands -- hundreds, thousands, millions of tiny shadow-hands on endlessly long, shapeless black arms. Though nothing seems to be guiding them, they unerring seek out everything and everyone living nearby. Slash them, cut them, burn them, blast them -- they simply reform and redouble their efforts to seize living beings.]

[Suddenly the flow shifts. Whereas before the circle disgorged Cthonian nightmares, now it pulls with unearthly strength. The shadow-hands wrap around their targets, seize them, and pull them in fast and hard.]

    [All is blinding white.]

[The scene abruptly resolves into coherent shapes and images again. Where before, they had stood under a sky red with monsters, now the heroes stand beneath a sky full of clouds, whose whiteness is the same ominous density that grey-blackness would be in a normal world. Lower in the sky, nearly blotting out those clouds, hung Lunatic Pandoras, countless Lunatic Pandoras, limitless temporal repetition of the same monolith.]

[In the center, where the Time Compression Distortion had touched Tears Point, now all that was visible was the bloated, decaying husk of a spider. A massive spider, whose sprawled legs stretch far off into the distance. Atop it, a spider that was miniscule only in comparison to the titan frantically weaves another line into a great web that seems poised to catch a descending crystal as it lurches laboriously groundward from some far-off point in the sky.]

[And if all that is strange, wait till you look around...]

[But there's still a job to be done.]

[OOC: Discussion post is here, and you really ought to read it before you post! Again, no tag order, multiple locations.]

[Balamb Garden surged forward through the black predawn hours, racing across the Great Plain of Esthar. 22 years ago, mobile Gardens had no access to the continent, but in the course of the decades and the increased goodwill between Balamb and Esthar, a large portion of the rocky cliffs had been demolished and graded, making an access ramp for the academies.]

[The night was completely black. The moon was new, and thus not out, and clouds covered the sky from horizon to horizon. In the distance, though, a sickly white-yellow light illuminated the low-hanging cloud cover.]

[The Time Compression distortion above Tears Point lanced into the sky past the clouds, a mighty finger of warped light that stood literal miles high. At its base, Tears Point faded in and out of view like a mirage.]

[The Ragnarok and the Chaotix docked with Balamb as the academy shuddered to a halt just outside of the projected worst-case scenario blast. Already loaded with supplies and ready for transport, the two airships held motionless just long enough for the combatants to board before lifting off, as the first rays of dawn ran across their hulls.

[Visible to the south, on the opposite side, three other airships raced to Tears Point: two literal sailing ships with propellers in place of sails, and one mighty large enough to engulf the other two a dozen times over. They landed in formation, and the army of Sol Invictus -- not just foot soldiers, but mighty vehicles and weapons of war -- emerged from its depths to form lines.]

[Not intentionally, but simply as a matter of the ebb and flow of the tides of war, Balamb Garden and Sol Invictus struck at the same time.]

[At first it was to no avail: the machinery of Tears Point, meant to repel the Lunatic Pandora, had been resurrected and repurposed; the mighty field they formed served as a mighty wall, repelling all efforts to breach it. But as Lunatic Pandora had ultimately overwhelmed it, so too did the field seem vulnerable to the massed might of its foes. From the SeeDs, blows, spells, and an abundance of rockets smashed into the field, weakening it with each impact, while on the other side Sol Invictus unleashed an astonishing fusillade of technological and magical might of their own. The generators whined and hummed in furious protests, their engines straining to counteract the onslaught. A couple of ranks in, the first machine to fail popped in brilliant flare of light, electricity arcing across its neighbors and smoldering metal shotgunning outwards.]

[As if signaled, a wave of monsters -- almost literally, the way they surged outwards between the protective devices -- passed through the one-way field effortlessly, smashing into the assembled lines. Though numerous, they were comparatively week; the might of Sol Invictus, and the training and discipline of the SeeDs and cadets, met their attack and repelled it with minimal loss. The monsters, however, seemed endless. Time Compression continued to surge and write, depositing wave after wave of foes to harry and harass those who opposed the Time Compression Mage's ultimate goal, and though those monsters could not dispatch his enemies, they accomplished their purpose nonetheless.]

[The great Time Compression Distortion abruptly shuddered, then without warning, disgorged a massive shape all at once, more like that great form had always been there than as if it had in some sense emerged from the distortion. Three miles tall, one and half wide; a gargantuan metal structure than shone as if with veins of light, almost obscuring the symbol of Esthar on its side.]

    [Lunatic Pandora.]

[At once, the field machines short-circuit in a pyrotechnical display that would have been awe-inspiring if not for the appearance of the Lunatic Pandora itself. The sudden shift of tidal forces was gut-wrenching, enough to drive weaker people to their knees from vertigo and nausea. In the sky above, the new moon burned a brilliant red, a long finger stretching from its surface towards the earth.]

[The field is down, but the monsters continue to surge forwards. Somewhere inside, the Time Compression Mage harnesses the massive tidal forces generated by the Crystal Pillar for his own ends. An army with a common goal fights on the opposite side of the pillar, but is the enemy of your enemy your friend?]

    [The Lunar cry has begun.]
