While attempting to map out the newly-risen archipelago off the northeast coast of Galbadia, navigators came across a castle-like structure in the middle of the ocean, reporting loud drilling noises and disturbed wildlife in the area. Believing the structure to have originated off-world, an Esthar-based energy company with interests nearby has hired SeeD to decommission the rig, whatever its purpose may be, and to bring back as much of the equipment as possible for further research.
[The Headmaster is missing, Galbadia has fallen, and tensions are fraught all round, but that's no excuse to spare the aspiring cadets of Balamb from the usual gauntlet. After all, they might be needed soon enough. That's how Namur and Starfire come to be dropped off at a small port town - on the Trabian side of the border, which wasn't quite part of the initial briefing - and ushered onto a rather battered tugboat, which wasn't either. After that, they're on their way.

The silhouettes of the islands of the mysterious archipelago are visible even through the fog off the shore, but before long, one of them indeed starts to resolve itself into a shape that marks it out from the rest - a tall, slender, multi-spired shape. And as the boat moves even closer, it'll become clear that not all of the haze out here is ordinary fog; it could be smoke or steam, but there's definitely something drifting lazily away from those fairytale towers.

Apart from the noise, that is. The drilling noise is easier to notice, though. It begins as a thrum through the water when the castle is still a somewhat indistinct blur on the horizon, rises into a roar - and then, just as the churning waves threaten to turn the little boat away altogether, subsides, leaving the surrounding waters calm again.

There's another barrier to entry, though: now that they're closing in on it, the castle seems to be perched on a solid block of concrete or something like it, and the walls are both smooth and sheer. The owner of the boat, a chiselled woman with greying hair, mutters something about not knowing where to dock, not wanting to get much closer before the apparent drilling starts up again (it always seems to, she says), and really, really not being paid enough for this.

What now?]

[People may recognize this guy from posters urging people to "vote for Douglas Thomas for Homecoming Prince", or as looking a bit like his SeeD older brother, Cameron. But they may not: his marketing was pretty terrible, considering some of those posters were on trees in the training center, and his family resemblance to his brother isn't that strong. He looks more disheveled and unwell than his photo on those posters, and is quite clearly sitting in an infirmary bed.]

Hey, uh, it's Doug. Can I borrow someone's notes from Chemistry, Old Dollet, and Cultural Studies? Just from last week - I can't believe I missed a whole week [and two days, but who's counting] of classes. How is it finals already?!

[He sighs.] The last thing I remember is the Headmaster escorting me to his office to talk about airships, and then I woke up this morning in a closet in my underpants, and the Balamb Times in my dorm said it was the twenty-second...

[In the background, Lizzie Neill, Miss Balamb Garden and apprentice doctor, can be heard arguing with Commander Zabala - Zabala is stressing the importance of asking Cadet Thomas about the Headmaster; Lizzie insists he's clearly been through an ordeal and needs his rest, Commander he is her patient.]

Anyway, just attach your notes to a private message, or drop them in the infirmary, or with my brother, Cameron. [He reaches forward and stops recording.]

[The ID posting this brief and curt announcement on the BBS probably isn't familiar to anyone who regularly uses it.]

For those who were unaware, Headmaster Cid Kramer is currently out of office. We are unfortunately not at liberty to disclose his date of return. Please rest assured that we will provide an update when available.

Until further notice, queries intended for the Headmaster may be redirected to Ms. Olivia Smith, Dean of Academics. Note that Commander Erlea Zabala is not responsible for the academic running of Garden. We apologize for the inconvenience.

[If anyone's tried to deliver those queries in person since the malfunction of the Training Center containment field, however, they will have found the headmaster's office closed and locked.]

    [SUP GUYS IT'S RUSSELL DRAKE]

Good morning, Balamb Garden! I'm Russell Drake, on your screens on behalf of the GFC, here to remind you all about the Garden's first beauty pageant! We'll be in the quad this afternoon bringing you uniform, formal, and swimwear modeling, a talent show, and personality questions to get to know our potential Miss and Mr. Balamb Garden. We've got quite a few signups, including most of your Homecoming nominees and the entire off-worlder population of Garden, so come on down!

[He's not going to be replying to any comments; he's gotta dash and set up the stage!]

    [ACTION]
[A small catwalk has been added to the quad's usual stage just for today. People on it might want to be careful, as it doesn't feel like the most stable of structures to walk on...

[Russell appears to be steering well clear of it, standing off to the side with a mic. What is his handsomeness doing not entering? Nobody knows.]

Good afternoon and welcome to Miss and Mr. Balamb Garden, bought to you by the Garden Festival Committee! I'm your host, Russell Drake, and our judges for this competition are Headmaster Cid Kramer and his wife, Edea Kramer, here all the way from Centra for our Homecoming festivities.

Candidates will be judged on ten point scales in three categories: Physicality, talent, and personality. Unlike Homecoming Court, this competition is not divided by position within or out of the Garden hierarchy, and winners receive a nice sash!

Without further ado, let's get this show on the road!

  • Physicality will be judged by modeling in three categories, and our first category is uniform. SeeDs and cadets will wear their dress uniforms while staff members wear whatever they wear to work - whatever you're wearing, wear it with pride! The Kramers will be looking for pressed pants, polished boots, and a professional salute!
  • On the more glamorous side of the competition, our second modeling category is formal wear. As a prelude to the glitz we expect at the Homecoming dance, our candidates will be dressed to the nines!
  • Rounding off our modeling category is swimwear! [As one GFC member unfurls a beachy backdrop and another drags a small inflatable pool onstage.] Remember, folks, it's swimwear if you can see water, underwear if you can't.
  • Next up is talent! Contestants have up to three minutes to wow us with a personal talent of theirs. Anything goes, so long as you don't hurt the audience or your fellow contestants!
  • And finally, we have the personality section, where I'll ask our candidates a question to answer from the heart. There are no wrong answers! Just give your reasons for your answer, and if you're answering with something from your home world, explain that to us too.

[Candidates have their own threads where you may respond to as many of the above bullet pointed prompts as you wish, as in the NPC examples - or if they didn't turn up, say so for the awkward silence on stage, and we will assume they will be skipped in subsequent categories! The intros given are read over their uniform modeling.]

    [BBS video]

Hey, Garden! Hope you're all enjoying the Homecoming season.

[Who's this girl greeting the webcam? Why, it's Zainah, respected treasurer of the GFC and purveyor of many a contemptuous glance at off-world cadets and SeeDs while walking past them in corridors. Today, however, there's no trace of that! School events are serious business, y'all.

...There's still something a little bit glassy about her smile, though.]

The Garden Festival Committee - that's us - has just a couple of announcements. Firstly, keep your calendars open for Friday, because the carnival is back! [And dear Hyne, you would not believe how much wrangling that took with the current states of both Garden's finances and the GFC's suppliers.] We've got a great spread of booths and games lined up for this year, and our customary date auction is set to take place in the quad in the afternoon. If you're worried about snagging a date in time for the big day, worry no longer!

Before that... [Did she just twitch?] we've got another new, exciting event waiting in the wings. Ever wanted to strut your stuff on the stage, but never had the chance? Well, Thursday's your big day, because Garden will be hosting its first ever beauty pageant just after lunch! Come and show us what you're made of!

[She doesn't sigh at the mental image of the weird, wacky monsters and sorceresses she expects to dominate the show, but she clearly wants to.]

...If you're raring to sign up for any of these, look for our sign in the cafeteria. We'll be around all week, so you can't miss us. Just remember to bring your Garden ID, as ever.

Anyway, Zainah out - oh, and don't forget to vote Helena Oster for Homecoming Princess!

    [And that's that.]

    [action]

[Throughout the week, GFC members can be found manning a table in the cafeteria (blame the terrible weather recently) with a large sign: SIGNUPS FOR HOMECOMING EVENTS! As well as entrants for the beauty pageant and date auction, cadets will be taking volunteers and last-minute suggestions for booths at the carnivals. If anyone volunteers to help out at a booth, they'll be assigned a (handwaved) shift in due course - they won't have to be stuck in there all day! Also, as Zainah mentioned, the GFC will be carding people as a safeguard against fake signups, but there are only so many of them around, and it's going to be pretty hectic in there...

Beauty pageant nominations will ICly close on Wednesday, while signups for carnival booths and the date auction will close on Thursday, at which point volunteers will be informed of their shifts.]

[Monday through Friday lunchtimes, a table will be set up in the cafeteria for B-Garden citizens to nominate people for homecoming court. A ballot will be given to all voters where they will put a nominee down for Homecoming Queen, Homecoming King, Homecoming Prince and Homecoming Princess. GFC members staffing the table will remind people that King and Queen are reserved for SeeDs while Prince and Princess are reserved for Cadets; nominations for other staff members will not be counted; and last year's winners (Marco, Pinkie, Ed and Mikuru) are ineligible for nomination. Happy voting!]

(Mod note: Please use the following copypasta. Comments are screened for secrecy, and will remain screened! The top three in each category will be in the running for the titles, and these will be announced next Monday. In the event of a draw, sudden death voting will be held OOC.)

[Oh hey, it's that handsome blonde guy from the GFC with the scar in his upper lip.]

Hello, citizens of Balamb Garden! I'm Russell Drake from the Garden Festival Committee, on the BBS today to announce Homecoming! For those of you who missed the last one and, like me, are from a place where homecoming isn't really a thing [the reason for the GFC's weird ideas about and timing for homecoming], it's a weekend party with a carnival and a dance where you might just win a plastic crown! [You may think he's being sarcastic about that crown, but in fact he is very earnest. Who wouldn't want a plastic crown??]

Get to know your fellow classmates and SeeDs, because next week in the quad, we'll be holding write in nominations for Homecoming Court, with SeeDs eligible for the titles of King and Queen as appropriate for their gender, and Cadets similarly eligible for Prince and Princess. They'll then have four weeks to campaign for your votes at the Homecoming Dance, which will be held on November 9th. Please note that last year's winners, SeeD Marco, Instructor Pinkie Pie, SeeD Edward Elric, and SeeD Mikuru Asahina are not eligible for nomination. Each organization may also choose their own Beaus and Sweethearts to represent them in the Court!

During homecoming week, week 6 of the trimester, we'll also be holding a date auction for those who want a little extra help getting a date for the dance, and a carnival on Friday November 8th. Yes, that means a day off school for fun, food, and entertainment! Let us know now about any stalls you'd like to see or perhaps run here; we love taking suggestions! The usual favorites such as the dunk tank, kissing booth, food stands, and talent quest will all be there; however, the Ferris wheel, bumper cars, and carousel have declined to return this year. [Alas, financial issues and unpopular political independence are not a good combination.] Personally, my favorites are the food stands - I love trying food from everyone's home worlds!

On behalf of the GFC, I'd like to wish everyone a warm welcome back to Balamb continent and the new trimester. Drake, out.

[The day is a bit cloudy, and wind on the water is around eighteen knots. The harbor is bustling with townspeople and visitors. Temporary stalls have been set up selling mostly food and drink or merchandise for the three Raha Cup yacht teams.

[You might need to shove a few people to get right on the waterfront, but the view of the boats in the harbor is well worth it. Once the race begins and the boats are clear of the harbor, remote control boats are available for rental; the race is expected to take two hours.

[At the nearby Balamb Hotel, there is a large TV screen set up outdoors with seating available. Hotel staff are running an outdoor bar for the occasion.

[Throughout the area and within a couple of blocks of both the waterfront and the hotel, a combination of SeeD, Cadets, and uniformed Balamb militia and police are posted as security, in response to threats received by the town council. Normally this event only has police security, so the townspeople seem to resent the need for this increased show of force rather than the fact that they're around at all.]

(OOC: Free-for-all! Feel free to make your own threads as well as using the location threads. NPCs may hit your characters up. You may have your SeeD/Cadet character hired as security if you choose; they will be in uniform, and will be on for half hour shifts so they have time to enjoy the event as well.)

[Night has fallen on Balamb Garden; the halls of Garden are mostly deserted besides the stray student walking about, and even the usual faculty members are missing from their posts around the school. There's a certain festive energy through the air, the source coming from the Ballroom cheerily decorated located on the second floor.

At exactly 2100, as soon as the dinner rush ends, the Garden chime sounds and the intercom clicks on. The Headmaster speaks to the Garden.]

The Graduation Ball is now beginning. Your attendance is requested at [2F] Ballroom.

I repeat, the Graduation Ball is now beginning. Your attendance is requested at [2F] Ballroom. The dance will run until 2400. Students leaving the ball after curfew are to return to their dorms immediately.

[After the announcement, the intercom falls silent. The faint sound of music can be heard from the second floor of the building. In the second floor ballroom, the Headmaster, Garden faculty, and even some of the instructors are present, so troublemakers are free to roam until 2400. Caterers roam, offering drinks and refreshments to the party goers; a stationary stand for punch and food is also offered. Unfamiliar people can be seen speaking with staff and amongst themselves - potential clients, perhaps?]

(Mod note: You may participate in the dance in comments to this post, or opt to make your own new post or log.

The dance is not mandatory (though it is strongly recommended that newly graduated SeeDs attend), so students that choose not to attend won't be punished.

Newly graduated SeeDs are required to wear their uniforms. Otherwise, the occasion is black tie. All inhabitants of Garden are welcome to the festivities.

Should players have any questions left unanswered, feel free to ping the mods via PM.)

[Field exams are often publicly announced, but the date for this one had been given to those involved in private, via private message on the BBS and notes left in dormitories, two days in advance. While SeeDs Nida and Touma H. Norstein had been briefed in private, the cadets would only be briefed on the day, and were simply ordered to meet at the front gate at 0600 hours on Friday morning armed and in uniform.

[Once the cadets and Touma are assembled, Headmaster Cid and a faculty member join them for the traditional send off speech:]

Good morning, everyone, I hope you're doing well this early morning.

[He paces as he walks, eying each cadet and SeeD as he does so.]

This exam will involve three members. )

[As Cid finishes up, the sound of the Ragnarok coming in grows louder, until it lands below the cadets and opens. Nida soon emerges.] Everyone into the passenger room for your briefing.

[Briefly, he pulls Rainbow Dash aside.] Traditionally we let our piloting specialists take off on field exams, but as this mission is time sensitive, I'll be taking it this time. I'm sorry; I promise there is a place for you to fly later in the mission.

[While there were much nicer looking flyers with more detail posted around, someone had crudely painted letters on a large banner and hung it over the door of the hotel, stating in a bright red scrawl:

    CHARITY TROLLEY DASH!!
    Meet Here, Noon March 2nd!!

It was a bit of an eyesore. Some of the older Balamb citizens gave the banner a distasteful look and shook their heads as they walked past this blight on their beautiful town.

Nonetheless, it was the day of the charity trolley dash, proceeds to go to Balamb Town Hospital's children's ward. It was only a short walk from the Balamb Hotel to the Harbor, where a group of volunteers had drawn a circuit out in chalk and littered it with various obstacles to avoid crashing into - mostly food can pyramids and the occasional tire. It was quite a twisty course considering they would be racing shopping trolleys, which were not the easiest things to steer.

The trolleys themselves were lined up where the start/finish line had been drawn. Already there were two unfamiliar pairs - likely Balamb citizens - dressed up in costume (angel, cowboy, caveman and a duck) and having taken their places.

The leader of the event - a scruffily dressed young man, who was wearing a pirate hat - was greeting the particpants as they arrived, placing their entry fee into a small pouch. He had no need for a megaphone, as his voice was naturally loud enough to make anyone nearby feel the need to cover their ears.
    ]

    Welcome!

We'll do four circuits! One of you in the trolley, one of you pushing! Swap at the end of each lap!

If anyone gets hurt, we've got two first aiders over there to fix you up!

No deliberately crashing into each other, got it?!

Come on! Hurry up! Take your places!

    We're starting in fifteen minutes!

[The two SeeDs and one cadet have the proud honor of being the first to ride Garden's new airship, the Chaotix, up to the Trabia mountains. From their landing point, it's a short and reasonably unpleasant hike up to the filming location -- but possibly one worth it.]

[This production is BIG. A full two hundred people have taken over an entire plateau, with tents and trailers and cameras and lighting rigs and production equipment that seems enough to make ten movies strewn about in organized chaos. Most of this mighty equipment is trained on the north side of the plateau, where some scene or another appears to be midway through takes.]

[They don't have much time to gawk, though; a tall man in a dark suit approaches them with a nod.]

[PM to Russel Drake and Zainah Coppell]

Hey guys! I just read the newsletter and it says that SeeDs can join the various committees and stuff now. So! Remember how we were talking about this around the time I arrived back home? Am I in or am I out? :D I'm sure between the three of us that we can come up with all sorts of awesome ideas for the next Festival and any other little events that might help with funding of your various projects!

Let me know what you guys think!

    - Selphie

    [BBS; Open to all!]

Hello Balamb Garden! Selphie here on the BBS stating that I've woken up from my weekend long veg!fest! Yeah, yeah, I know. As a SeeD, I should be setting a better example and continuing work even though I felt like I'd been trampled by a stampeding herd (...flock?) of Chocobo's, sometimes you just have to take care of yourself!

So yeah, I kinda slept for a good chunk of the weekend. Don't worry, I remembered to eat and bathe and gulp down a potion or two. Speaking of potions, is it me or are they tasting worse than I remember? They always used to taste a bit bitter but now the taste is just awful!

And speaking of awful stuff, I have a little message to a certain group of cadets who I had to keep bailing out all the time. If I ever catch the lot of you trying to take on a Tri-Face with obviously underdeveloped GFs ever again, I'm honestly going to let you learn the hard way and let you...

It's a surprise! ^_~ You'll just have to use your imaginations, won't you? You know who you are!

Now then... to find something to do other than training.

[And having not found anything of interest to do, Selphie can be found in a) The Training Centre, b) The Library or c) The Quad with her nose stuck in a graphic novel. What are you going to do Garden?]

[Oh look, it's the friendlier-to-off-worlders of the two GFC co-leaders, Russell Drake! Now sporting a scar in his upper lip.]

Hello from the Garden Festival Committee! We hope everyone's doing okay with the current mission. But don't worry, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it ain't Heaven: I've got some exciting announcements today for Valentine's Day, that Earth holiday of lovers!

The headmaster has generously allowed us to use some of the supplies from the would-have-been graduation ball [yeah, nobody graduated this quarter; the NPCs all failed] to hold a Sweethearts Dance! This will be held in the ballroom on Friday February 15th.

And to help you find a date for the dance, we'll be running a date auction in the quad on Monday February 11th at lunchtime, the first day of the new term. So if you want a hot date for the dance, sign yourselves up or save up your gil!

We will also be bringing back that favorite Valentine's activity, secret admirer deliveries. From just two gil, you can send that special person a token of your affections, hand delivered to your recipient's dorm room on Thursday February 14th by the Garden Festival Committee.

Proceeds from the auction and deliveries will go towards building a recreation room, and we'll be holding signups for the auction and taking delivery orders in the cafeteria all week. And seriously, guys, stop signing up the unwilling. I will personally be watching the signup desk this time!

On behalf of the Garden Festival Committee, I'd like to wish you a happy Valentine's Day, and we hope that you have fun! Drake, out.

[Date auction signups will close Saturday night; delivery orders (in another post so they can be screened) will close Wednesday night.]

Sorry. [Russ sits back down, but switches to drumming his fingers on his laptop; this earns a scowl from Zainah which goes utterly unnoticed.] But - what if she doesn't like us?

She'll like you. Just don't bring up anything punrelated.

    You know those were scripted!
