Hi guys! Long time no see! Um, that is assuming that my old furiends are still around. I really hope you guys are. I'm really glad to be back here, however chaotic things seem to be.

[Because really. Nepeta considers this place her home. More than Alternia ever was (though really that wasn't saying much.]

Does anyone have any tips on tracking people? I've been hired on a missing person mission and I don't actually know much about finding people - the last time I had to find someone, I managed to come across them by accident, but I don't think that's going to work this time.

MONSTERS EVERYWHERE IN GARDEN AND NOT JUST T-REXAURS OR GRATS, GO GO GO )
(OOC:
  • Links go to images, except for the Tri-Face link, which goes to FF Wiki.
  • Mods will not be NPCing monsters unless requested; please feel free to NPC your own.
  • On a scale of one to ten for strength, one being Training Center Grats and ten being the Island Closest to Heaven, most of these monsters fall around seven or eight.
  • All monsters are, on occasion, vulnerable to Card, Devour, and the various one-shot spells.
  • Monsters are finite and do not respawn.
  • IC-ly, we expect this to be over in a day or two.

[There seems to be a festive atmosphere all throughout Garden. Why? Because it's the Homecoming Carnival! The Garden Festival Committee have been hard at work all morning and when 1300 hours strikes, it's finally open for everyone to enjoy.

The directory has been reprogrammed slightly:
It also has a piece of paper stuck underneath:

    Kissing booth: Turn around
Food booths: Around 1F main circle
    Triple Triad: 2F bridge
    Carnival games: Front gate area
    Chocobo rides: Road to Garden

Each stall/booth has free, more elaborate maps:
    Large image! )

    Have fun, Garden!]

Each attraction has its own thread. We've listed the people running shifts in the top comments as a reminder to those who signed up; feel free to make your character a thread for their shift even if you missed OOC signups.

Characters have different shifts which allow for everyone to enjoy other parts of the carnival as well instead of being stuck manning a booth the whole night. For the dunk tank, kissing booth, food booths, and talent quest it's best to leave your character's name in the subject of their comment to start off their thread indicating their shift/time onstage.

Proceeds will be split between further events and building and furnishing a student lounge for fun stuff, so most attractions cost money:
Kissing booth: 2 gil per kiss
Chocobo rides: 5 gil per person
Carnival games (archery, throwing/shooting X at Y, water gun race, whack a mole, skee ball, Ring the Bell, etc): 1 gil per game
Face painting: 2 gil per person
Food stalls: Snow cones 3 gil, cotton candy 3 gil, and funnel cake 5 gil; "food from your home world" up to individual characters
Dunk tank: 5 gil for 3 balls, 10 gil for 10 balls
Fortune telling: 3 gil per reading
Marriage booth: 5 gil a couple
Balloon animals: 3 gil an animal

    [SUP GUYS IT'S RUSSELL DRAKE]

Good morning, Balamb Garden! I'm Russell Drake, on your screens on behalf of the GFC, here to remind you all about the Garden's first beauty pageant! We'll be in the quad this afternoon bringing you uniform, formal, and swimwear modeling, a talent show, and personality questions to get to know our potential Miss and Mr. Balamb Garden. We've got quite a few signups, including most of your Homecoming nominees and the entire off-worlder population of Garden, so come on down!

[He's not going to be replying to any comments; he's gotta dash and set up the stage!]

    [ACTION]
[A small catwalk has been added to the quad's usual stage just for today. People on it might want to be careful, as it doesn't feel like the most stable of structures to walk on...

[Russell appears to be steering well clear of it, standing off to the side with a mic. What is his handsomeness doing not entering? Nobody knows.]

Good afternoon and welcome to Miss and Mr. Balamb Garden, bought to you by the Garden Festival Committee! I'm your host, Russell Drake, and our judges for this competition are Headmaster Cid Kramer and his wife, Edea Kramer, here all the way from Centra for our Homecoming festivities.

Candidates will be judged on ten point scales in three categories: Physicality, talent, and personality. Unlike Homecoming Court, this competition is not divided by position within or out of the Garden hierarchy, and winners receive a nice sash!

Without further ado, let's get this show on the road!

  • Physicality will be judged by modeling in three categories, and our first category is uniform. SeeDs and cadets will wear their dress uniforms while staff members wear whatever they wear to work - whatever you're wearing, wear it with pride! The Kramers will be looking for pressed pants, polished boots, and a professional salute!
  • On the more glamorous side of the competition, our second modeling category is formal wear. As a prelude to the glitz we expect at the Homecoming dance, our candidates will be dressed to the nines!
  • Rounding off our modeling category is swimwear! [As one GFC member unfurls a beachy backdrop and another drags a small inflatable pool onstage.] Remember, folks, it's swimwear if you can see water, underwear if you can't.
  • Next up is talent! Contestants have up to three minutes to wow us with a personal talent of theirs. Anything goes, so long as you don't hurt the audience or your fellow contestants!
  • And finally, we have the personality section, where I'll ask our candidates a question to answer from the heart. There are no wrong answers! Just give your reasons for your answer, and if you're answering with something from your home world, explain that to us too.

[Candidates have their own threads where you may respond to as many of the above bullet pointed prompts as you wish, as in the NPC examples - or if they didn't turn up, say so for the awkward silence on stage, and we will assume they will be skipped in subsequent categories! The intros given are read over their uniform modeling.]

    NO BOYS ALLOWED!!
Refreshments will be served, along with music and makeovers!
    Wear comfy clothing!

It hasn't been done in quite some time, and I'm aware that a good number of us speak Japanese, but who would like to help others learn the language? Alternatively, who would like to start a group to maintain our Japanese? I find that the less we use our native language, them more we'll forget.

    Thank you for your time.

Those that truly know Pinkie may recognize her, but she won't be acting like her usual self!

[The day is a bit cloudy, and wind on the water is around eighteen knots. The harbor is bustling with townspeople and visitors. Temporary stalls have been set up selling mostly food and drink or merchandise for the three Raha Cup yacht teams.

[You might need to shove a few people to get right on the waterfront, but the view of the boats in the harbor is well worth it. Once the race begins and the boats are clear of the harbor, remote control boats are available for rental; the race is expected to take two hours.

[At the nearby Balamb Hotel, there is a large TV screen set up outdoors with seating available. Hotel staff are running an outdoor bar for the occasion.

[Throughout the area and within a couple of blocks of both the waterfront and the hotel, a combination of SeeD, Cadets, and uniformed Balamb militia and police are posted as security, in response to threats received by the town council. Normally this event only has police security, so the townspeople seem to resent the need for this increased show of force rather than the fact that they're around at all.]

(OOC: Free-for-all! Feel free to make your own threads as well as using the location threads. NPCs may hit your characters up. You may have your SeeD/Cadet character hired as security if you choose; they will be in uniform, and will be on for half hour shifts so they have time to enjoy the event as well.)

[The Potions Professor is indeed hard at work, or at least as hard as he gets, since he makes potions look easy as a general rule. [A: Marco generally lives on a different plane from most. He's long since realized and accepted this, but every so often it sinks in with lightning speed. He's damned glad to have Thatch and Namur back around him again, but it also makes other old habits recur. Which is why Marco spends a good portion of time up in trees again, singing quietly. He's hardly alone though, between birds in the trees with him and people crossing below, it wouldn't be hard to catch him during this time at all.]

[B: And then he makes two BBS posts back to back.]

Hey everyone! Saturday is my baby brother's birthday! Namur's. You probably noticed by now that he's a pirate and very proud of that heritage, so I was hoping we could have a beach party! I don't want to steal Selphie's brilliant plan, but if it's not too much trouble to combine the two, I know he'd absolutely love that. Presents are definitely not required, just come and have fun! But if you feel like it, he loves sushi and booze! And he'd probably get a good kick out of any snorkeling gear! [Because haha he's a shark. Not that Marco mentioned that part because Marco is an ass.]

[C: The next part is on a way more serious note and he tries to distract Thatch from seeing it.]

On a way more serious note, someone used black holes during the fight. You're not in trouble for that, it was a great idea tactically, and I'm glad you did it.

However, there's a big deal about them back home in my world, and an old family enemy. If possible, I'd like to speak to the person who used them in person about that technique please.

The Time Compression offers a bizarre chance to cheat death in a way. For anyone who is dead in their own world's timeline and knows it, or anyone who knows of a friend from their timeline who is dead there, but alive here, please speak with me about that. I'm sorry for the intensely personal nature of that question, but it's important and I promise, I only wish to help.

Likewise, during the whole spirit world gate thing, some of us went through some big changes. Or had certain aspects of themselves revealed. If anyone is suffering lingering effects, aftermath or simply could use someone to talk to about it, I can probably help more than you'd expect.

And lastly, while we're on the topic of possibly negative things taking us by surprise, I know of at least two people here with personal experiences dealing with slavery. Could a native to this world help clear up some questions about citizenry and this world's slavery that isn't easily found it textbooks, and if any other offworlders would like to come forth to talk about their experiences with it, I'd vastly appreciate that. I can also give you some resources to help.

    Thank you very much,
    - Marco

P.S. Oh, and the offer for tutoring sessions is back on. I'll extend it past all forms of mathematics and reading, to martial arts, biology, and tips on cheating your way through Instructor Thatch's course, but the biology tutoring will be with Namur, and the last one requires bribes. Those swords of Thatch's are almost as sharp as his clothes and hair. ;)

P.P.S. Dolphin! If you see this, Namur is from Fishman Island. Namur, Dolphin knows a city called Atlantis that is very much like Fishman Island! Also Dolphin, Namur can actually draw, unlike me, so he can help you in comparing the two! Discuss away you both.

[Time Compression, in its purest form -- a tangled ball like a naked singularity, where space and time are points rather than dimensions, and no standard laws of reality apply.]

[The Gate of Truth: a portal between this world and another, the means by which alchemical energy comes into this world, capable of separating those who cross it into body, mind, and soul.]

[Mixing the two might have been a bad idea.]

[From a circle on the ground in the very depths of Tears Point, a yawning void opens. From it pour hands -- hundreds, thousands, millions of tiny shadow-hands on endlessly long, shapeless black arms. Though nothing seems to be guiding them, they unerring seek out everything and everyone living nearby. Slash them, cut them, burn them, blast them -- they simply reform and redouble their efforts to seize living beings.]

[Suddenly the flow shifts. Whereas before the circle disgorged Cthonian nightmares, now it pulls with unearthly strength. The shadow-hands wrap around their targets, seize them, and pull them in fast and hard.]

    [All is blinding white.]

[The scene abruptly resolves into coherent shapes and images again. Where before, they had stood under a sky red with monsters, now the heroes stand beneath a sky full of clouds, whose whiteness is the same ominous density that grey-blackness would be in a normal world. Lower in the sky, nearly blotting out those clouds, hung Lunatic Pandoras, countless Lunatic Pandoras, limitless temporal repetition of the same monolith.]

[In the center, where the Time Compression Distortion had touched Tears Point, now all that was visible was the bloated, decaying husk of a spider. A massive spider, whose sprawled legs stretch far off into the distance. Atop it, a spider that was miniscule only in comparison to the titan frantically weaves another line into a great web that seems poised to catch a descending crystal as it lurches laboriously groundward from some far-off point in the sky.]

[And if all that is strange, wait till you look around...]

[But there's still a job to be done.]

[Remember when Mikuru had to do a ton of public speaking as leader of the GFC?

[This is harder. And with time as precious as it is, she is trying to keep this as to the point as possible.]

Back home, I was a time traveler. The equipment [yes, that's a good word for it] that allows me to do so came here with me, but with time as messed up as it is here I was always too scared to try and use it in case it somehow messed with time compression even more or I ended up somewhere strange...

But I think it's time I stopped being scared. The Time Compression Mage said he's going to manipulate the time distortion - maybe my time travel gear can help us gain our own control over the distortion, or help us travel around it easier.

I honestly don't know how it works, but if anyone wants to have a look at it and pull it apart to figure it out and maybe make something similar, I'll have it in my office,
[some room number on the second floor].

Hello SeeDs, Cadets, and staff members,

I'm sure you've all heard about the peculiar winter Trabia continues to experience. Normally the continent would be starting to warm up around this year (as much as it ever does), but this year the usual seasonal changes have not taken hold:
  • Temperatures remain cold
  • The snow and ice have not melted
  • Nights are still long
  • Plants are not showing signs of new growth or blooming
  • Hibernating animals are still hibernating
  • Migratory animals have not returned

Trabia's top scientists are beginning to suspect time compression is to blame. A scientific team from Esthar is looking into how to stop this seasonal freeze at its source, but since the prolonged winter is already affecting farming and looks set to affect the hydroelectricity grid, the Trabian government is more concerned with bringing on spring.

As we have considerable experience with the effects of time compression, as well as a number of people with from different worlds which may work differently from our own, a small delegation including a researcher from the University of Trabia's Environmental Science department and the Trabian Minister of Agriculture will be arriving in Balamb Garden on Tuesday to discuss possible solutions.

This will be a closed conference, unfortunately, to keep order and so as not to disrupt classes, but I would appreciate and will pass on any suggestions or proposals you may have. Please use this post to discuss among yourselves how Trabia might induce spring.

    Best,

    Headmaster Cid

  • (OOC: Open discussion post! Threadjack each other and don't feel like you need to wait for NPC responses. The date is an IC arrival date only rather than an OOC tagging deadline; please feel free to keep backtagging! The delegation's visit will not be logged, but all suggestions will be passed on IC.)

But for those of you who cannot live without assignments, feel free to come down to my room and show me how many ways you can wrap a present!

But remember! All assignments will not be returned! [She giggles before she waves at the camera, reaching forward to turn it off.]

Also, does anyone have good ideas for a first year anniversary when a trip is out of the question? Seriously.
