This... this video was sent to us by a representative from Esthar. We debated long and hard about whether or not we should post it, but... we believe that you should see it.

[The attached video opens with a view of the Great Salt Lake, along with numerous digits in the corner that appear to be an artifact of the recording process, possibly a timecode. The picture is fairly grainy, as if the camera were of lower quality, but is in color. There is no audio.]

[After a moment of nothing but slowly moving clouds, several large words appear, clearly edited into the video in post:]

[They fade, just in time for distant movement to register in the video image. The background jumps forward as the camera zooms in. As it focuses, the blocky, blotchy squares resolve into the still-grainy, but nonetheless unmistakable tri-cannon shape of Trabia Garden in its mobile form.]

[The camera holds on this until Trabia starts to move out of its field of vision, then jumps back to its original wide angle. Trabia is much less clear in this shot, just a moving group of pixels in the background, headed at an angle past the Great Salt Lake which it cannot effectively pass--]

[A pillar of light blooms from its location, rainbow light in countless swirls and confusion. The effect is unmistakable, for anyone who has seen the slightest hint of Time Compression in action. The rest of the scene remains horribly still and unmoving, and the camera doesn't even quiver as it should have, were this an actual explosion.]

[Suddenly, the bloom of light collapses on itself as if it had been violently yanked through a hole much too small for it. The camera again focuses on that same scene it always has, as if nothing had changed. A moment later, more edited-in words fade onto the screen:]

[The video abruptly ends.]

A couple of days after Garden Master Laguna's first order, preparations for war are well underway wherever one looks, and many a non-combat or medical instructor is excusing cadets who claim they are helping with the war effort.

All throughout the building, building checks and last minute repairs are still underway, and the Garden Master himself is out and about and ready for a chat.

In the training center, some people have taken to offering free spar sessions. Sometimes instructors and SeeDs can be found offering fighting tips to the less experienced.

For those who would rather train against monsters, the Fire Cavern is open and supervised. It's a good place to draw Fire and Thunder spells, too.

The infirmary is offering first aid refresher crash courses and small medpacks to bring into battle. They also need help making said packs and sorting their hastily purchased supplies.

Speaking of supplies, the 2F supply rooms, normally only entered for missions and relevant classes, are doing an inventory of the weapon and spell stocks still available after the Battle of the Three Gardens. Magic stocks are being topped up by refining spells from other items.

Considering someone used a carrier vehicle in said Battle, people are also checking all of Garden's vehicles in the garages (as well as the small fleet of boats kept at Balamb Harbor). Mechanics would be much appreciated.

Though several of the lesser trained cadets have been pulled out of school by their parents following the declaration of war, those left are being subjected to evacuation and lockdown drills in the dorms.

(OOC: Despite the prompts being in prose, please feel free to action tag!)

[In the afternoon of the 17th, without warning, Garden lurches dramatically, rapidly swiveling on its vertical axis -- flinging unsecured items to the floor, toppling overeager students in the library and the chatting congregation in the cafeteria from their seats. An uncharacteristic whine vibrates through the first floor as the sub-basement engines spin faster, accelerating the mobile fortress along its new heading.]

[A moment later, the intercom chimes.]

This is Commander Zabala. Galbadia Garden will intercept us in around fifteen minutes. I repeat: Galbadia Garden will intercept us in fifteen minutes. In our current position, and with Galbadia Garden's advantage in mobility, we can no longer hope to outmaneuver. Nor can we hope to resolve this diplomatically. We are moving away from them as fast as we can, but they will intercept us just as we cross onto the southern Trabia coast. There, we believe they will attempt to board -- there, we will fight.

All of Garden must now prepare. Do not press the attack into Galbadia Garden. Balamb Garden is our stronghold, and we have the advantage of defenses; we can force them to withdraw through attrition. Remain aboard Balamb and inflict what casualties you can. Barricade the lobby, the second floor hallway, the ballroom, and the dorms. Junior cadets are ordered to take shelter in the dorms; senior Instructors are ordered to withdraw to the dorms and protect them to your utmost ability. Defend the hot dogs if and only if time allows. [Oh boy, she's going to catch some flak for that one.

There's an anticipatory pause.]

If Sol Invictus defeats us here, nothing and no one is left to oppose them. They know that. Make sure they do not achieve their goals.

[The intercom cuts out, and the clock's ticking.]

(ooc: Sol Invictus is on Balamb's doorstep, and they're not here for a tea party. After fifteen IC minutes, the first phase of the January 17th invasion will begin, with armed SI members pouring in seemingly without end from the main entrance and the roof. More details on this plot arc are in the OOC post on B3G.

Subthreads are provided; they are intended as loose prompts, so you are welcome to treat their locations fluidly or come up with your own scenarios / top-level comments. You may also NPC your own SI members and monsters, but bear in mind that, as the OOC post says, this is not an easy fight. Sol Invictus members are off-worlders of varying species and abilities, with training.

As ever, feel free to contact the mods through the usual channels for additional details or to request NPCing.)

[People may recognize this guy from posters urging people to "vote for Douglas Thomas for Homecoming Prince", or as looking a bit like his SeeD older brother, Cameron. But they may not: his marketing was pretty terrible, considering some of those posters were on trees in the training center, and his family resemblance to his brother isn't that strong. He looks more disheveled and unwell than his photo on those posters, and is quite clearly sitting in an infirmary bed.]

Hey, uh, it's Doug. Can I borrow someone's notes from Chemistry, Old Dollet, and Cultural Studies? Just from last week - I can't believe I missed a whole week [and two days, but who's counting] of classes. How is it finals already?!

[He sighs.] The last thing I remember is the Headmaster escorting me to his office to talk about airships, and then I woke up this morning in a closet in my underpants, and the Balamb Times in my dorm said it was the twenty-second...

[In the background, Lizzie Neill, Miss Balamb Garden and apprentice doctor, can be heard arguing with Commander Zabala - Zabala is stressing the importance of asking Cadet Thomas about the Headmaster; Lizzie insists he's clearly been through an ordeal and needs his rest, Commander he is her patient.]

Anyway, just attach your notes to a private message, or drop them in the infirmary, or with my brother, Cameron. [He reaches forward and stops recording.]

[Night has fallen on Balamb Garden; the halls of Garden are mostly deserted besides the stray student walking about, and even the usual faculty members are missing from their posts around the school. There's a certain festive energy through the air coming from the happily decorated ballroom located on the second floor.

[At exactly 2100, as soon as the dinner rush ends, the Garden chime sounds and the intercom clicks on. The Headmaster speaks to the Garden.]

The Homecoming Dance is now beginning. Your attendance is requested at [2F] Ballroom.

I repeat, the Homecoming Dance is now beginning. Your attendance is requested at [2F] Ballroom. The ball will run until 2400. Students leaving the ball after curfew are to return to their dorms immediately.

The ball and its festivities tonight are being sponsored very generously by the Garden Festival Committee.

[After the announcement, the intercom falls silent. The faint sound of music can be heard from the second floor of the building.

[Within the ballroom, there is a stationary stand for punch and food, as well as roaming caterers offering drinks (grape juice) and canapes.]

There is a comment thread for voting here. Votes will close on Monday night OOC-ly (or later if we don't get many votes over the weekend) and there will another thread for announcing and crowning the winners.

Attendance is entirely optional, so with most of the faculty at the dance, characters are free to roam the rest of the school!

[Around the female cadet dormitory, one can spot Grell passing out red envelopes with a rose scent. Either one is given into hands personally, or slipped under doors. There is a flyer inside, with an advertisement for Girl's Night!]

Refreshments will be served, along with music and makeovers!
Wear comfy clothing!

Brought to you by Grell for Homecoming Queen!

[If she isn't in the dormitory, then she's on the computer in the quad or at the desk playing secretary (which...is her job).]

[The mission takes place in three parts... but only one matters.]

[The first part was transporting the hover-car, by truck, from a scientific facility near Dollet to Deling City proper. This, of course, was the most dangerous step, with the greatest potential from interference from outside sources. With every move coordinated, every step double-checked, and every mile nerve-wracking, the convoy made it safely to Deling City without any assault from any outside force.]

[Should be a piece of cake from there, right? The next part was guarding it in its warehouse facility, and that too proved easy; a false alarm on the second night of guard detail proved to be a pooch entirely too interested in a bird on the roof, rather than the oncoming force of a thousand SI troops it first seemed to be.]

[The third part? On the second evening of the conference, accompanied by scientist and event organizer Vindcent Rubello, the SeeD Team escorted the hovercar in its transport truck through the streets of Deling City to the conference building and supervised its setup and activation... only to hear something of a tumult inside...]

[Vindcent hurries for the doors into the auditorium, as his intern hops into the car to steer it after him through the back halls to the stage. Obviously, they expect the SeeDs to come and continue their guard details... ]

[It's that time of year again. Where it is encroaching upon Grell's birthday, she's up in arms about Homecoming, and Marco has no ideas for either. Well, some ideas, just not good ones.]

[So you know what?]

[Fuck it!]

[Marco is hiding out in phoenix form munching squash seeds.]

[Actually, this is not his typical phoenix form. You see normally, he's almost indistinguishable from the world's phoenixes except for being blue and sparkly. This time, it looks like someone bred a horrifying combination of a chocobo and a peacock.]

[Yeah. Not pretty.]

[Marco even shares some of his seeds with the chocobo around them as he asks them for advice. It doesn't go well.]

This is what I get for asking non-homicidal birds, yoi. [Hey, who said that?] I mean... wark. [Deadpan.]

[Later on the BBS this mysterious post will appear (as well as sparkly fliers throughout the halls):]

Attention all SeeD and cadets, this is a very important announcement!

They are edible and delicious, and should only ever be planted or devoured.

If you have no interest in roasting them for yourself, see Marco SeeD rank 11 for a 500 gil reward for every pound of seeds you bring, thank you.

Why you should vote Grell Sutcliff for HOMECOMING QUEEN :

    1. It would only be natural for me to elevate my previous title of HOMECOMING PRINCESS.

    2. No one else, especially not a pony, would look better wearing that crown!

    3. Becoming Homecoming Princess was quite the magical night for me, so I wonder just how much more magical becoming Homecoming Queen would be!

    4. When I become Homecoming Queen, I vow to only rub salt on the wounds of my competitors for that night.

So please look forward to a myriad of events from me in the days to come! For today, stop by the quad for freshly baked cupcakes. First come, first served!

[PM to Namur, Espio, and Thatch]

Which one of you will actually run? It would be nice to have a running partner.

[Grell will be at the quad, giving out cupcakes with different pastel frostings. They are definitely from a bakery, but she made sure to get to them first thing that day, so they were indeed fresh.

She is totally trying to gain all the votes by any means.]

[Oh hey, it's that handsome blonde guy from the GFC with the scar in his upper lip.]

Hello, citizens of Balamb Garden! I'm Russell Drake from the Garden Festival Committee, on the BBS today to announce Homecoming! For those of you who missed the last one and, like me, are from a place where homecoming isn't really a thing [the reason for the GFC's weird ideas about and timing for homecoming], it's a weekend party with a carnival and a dance where you might just win a plastic crown! [You may think he's being sarcastic about that crown, but in fact he is very earnest. Who wouldn't want a plastic crown??]

Get to know your fellow classmates and SeeDs, because next week in the quad, we'll be holding write in nominations for Homecoming Court, with SeeDs eligible for the titles of King and Queen as appropriate for their gender, and Cadets similarly eligible for Prince and Princess. They'll then have four weeks to campaign for your votes at the Homecoming Dance, which will be held on November 9th. Please note that last year's winners, SeeD Marco, Instructor Pinkie Pie, SeeD Edward Elric, and SeeD Mikuru Asahina are not eligible for nomination. Each organization may also choose their own Beaus and Sweethearts to represent them in the Court!

During homecoming week, week 6 of the trimester, we'll also be holding a date auction for those who want a little extra help getting a date for the dance, and a carnival on Friday November 8th. Yes, that means a day off school for fun, food, and entertainment! Let us know now about any stalls you'd like to see or perhaps run here; we love taking suggestions! The usual favorites such as the dunk tank, kissing booth, food stands, and talent quest will all be there; however, the Ferris wheel, bumper cars, and carousel have declined to return this year. [Alas, financial issues and unpopular political independence are not a good combination.] Personally, my favorites are the food stands - I love trying food from everyone's home worlds!

On behalf of the GFC, I'd like to wish everyone a warm welcome back to Balamb continent and the new trimester. Drake, out.

Dj fishbros got the tunes! Wheres my plannin peeps? Someone bring food, someone else bring drinks. Invite the local friends you made over the break and we'll make it a night to remember!

[A little while later, an IC edit goes up.]

Warehouse down by the wharf. Party starts when people show up. Ends when they shut us down.

[At about the same time this post goes up, certain people will also be receiving PMs individually, though the PM is identical to each person:]

[PMs to Marco, Thatch, Grell, Ace, and Espio]

So weathers shitty and that means the beach is out. One of you guys find us a place to party with a roof overhead and we're set.

[Yes, that's all the context he gives. Let's see if this thing happens, huh?]

[There is a pile outside her dorm room of mostly things that are broken due to the rough tumble Garden took. Broken mirrors, ruined towels, shattered teacups and saucers, and cat toys tangled beyond help. The pile grows each day, little by little, as she sifts through her room. Don't trip on it!]

[Grell is walking about the Garden with her cats on a leash, mostly taking a break from putting her room right. Her cats stop to play with a wad of paper, however Grell isn't paying attention to that. Only when the lease becomes taut does she realize they've stopped. She seems pretty wrapped up in her own thoughts up until this point. With a sigh, she snaps her fingers at them a few times.]

Leave it! [The cats come to attention and look to each other, as if truly contemplating on whether or not they should listen. Really, guys?]

I'm offering 100 Gil to anyone who can clear away the pile of broken items from just outside my dormitory.

[As people panicked or smashed through their doors, or used alchemy on them, or otherwise wrecked up Garden and fled into the lobby or the halls, a few things have quickly become clear, either shouted or spread by word of mouth:]

[Garden is precariously balanced on the edge of a canyon wall -- a canyon wall that was certainly not there last night. Garden didn't move all through the night, either, so how this happened is anybody's guess...]

[Speaking of precariously balanced, we DO mean precariously. The tilting has been perceptible, but glacial, and in fact it has slowed noticeably since Rainbow Dash started pushing against the bottom of the suspected edge of Garden. On the other hand, some people removed a car and a few people from the over-land side, which has made the balance slightly worse, and so the pony is losing ground again.]

[People remain scattered in small groups within the Garden, and the power remains completely out. This is not terribly surprising; the internal generators are not particularly hardened, since normally any damage that reached them would have to go through the entire surrounding structure to get to them. Dorm rooms are beginning to light up as sunlight trickles through their windows, but the lobby and many other areas still have no light.]

[No sign of Commander Zabala or Headmaster Cid. Rumors are swirling from some of the cadets that this is another of Zabala's crazy tests.]

[What's the plan?]

[Thursday morning, 0559 hours.]

[Garden as a whole abruptly drops two feet.]

[The facility strikes the ground with a massive crash and shake that bears the full weight of every single one of its pounds. Loose items tumble to the floor and glass shatters in a cacophonous tumult that only serves as counterpoint to the greater and far more ominous crash of earth meeting metal. Massive vibrations race through Garden as different parts of it resonate with the force of the impact. Somewhere on the first floor, a chocobo literally screams in rage, a sound almost monstrous in its inhumanity. The lights flicker and then go out entirely.]

[Like an earthquake -- and no one would blame anyone for mistaking the source of the crash and shake, if not for the sickening drop that had yanked everyone's stomach into their throat for a heartstopping moment -- the shaking, roar, and vibrations slowly fade away, leaving only panick, fear, and disarray behind. And very ominous silence. The power has failed; the lights are out, water does not flow, and besides the residents, nothing stirs.]

[Then... slowly, but inexorably, Balamb Garden begins to tilt.]

[Opens to a video post with a young man who looks like he hasn't slept well in a few days. This is mostly because he hasn't. Of course instead of bothering Grell and Marco and Thatch he decided to try and figure out on his own first. He hates the fact he's resorting to the BBS system, but in reality he is just at his limits with how much he can take.]

Hey Garden!

Does anyone have a clue what I can do to get some sleep? I don't feel like sleep spells are cutting it and I can't afford to fall asleep at even more random intervals then I already do. Some help with this would be wonderful.

Thanks, Ace.
selphie_t: (Default)
[personal profile] selphie_t
[Selphie wasn't feeling like herself and instead of having people come out seeking her for whatever reason, she'd sent notice to the Headmaster that she was taking a couple weeks off. She wanted to be away from the hustle and bustle of Garden for a bit. She'd left early one morning without telling anyone in the dorms.

The down time did wonders for her and let her sort herself out in ways that she wouldn't have been able to do at Balamb. She couldn't go very far because of the political situation but it was nice to get away all the same. It may have seemed like she was running away from her problems but she ran anyway. To her, it felt like the only option left to her at the time.

That was over two weeks ago. The perky brunette has returned to Garden eager to get back to work. This is another issue she's conflicted about. What does she want to do with her life? All she's ever known is being a SeeD and it has left her wondering what else is out there. She'd always be in danger if she remained in Garden but regardless, Garden was home for her.

With this problem in mind, Selphie heads for the dorms, intent on browsing the BBS to get caught up on what's been going on at the school. Getting back to Balamb itself had proven to be a problem with the declaration of Balamb Garden's independence and had left her with no choice but to improvise. Finding clothes that were different from her own weren't a major problem but security at the borders was possibly tighter than when they'd been at war.

Regardless, anyone who spots the girl sneaking through the halls might just notice that she's styled her hair into a plain ponytail but leaving her bangs the same. A simple pair of jeans and t-shirt with sneakers had allowed her to blend in with the public better than her usual attire.

Eventually, she logs onto the network and after browsing through the BBS, she decides to make a post.]

Guess this will teach me to take a vacation, huh?

[Although, the "gentlemen" who attempted a strip search at the border have since lived to regret it. Selphie... intentionally neglects to mention that little tidbit.]

If anyone has seen colored, plastic eggs about Garden, I would appreciate if they are returned to me. In exchange, there will be a refreshing beverage awaiting any kind soul that turns one in! I shall be in the quad.

[Grell has sectioned off an area in the quad to set up a table, a two chairs (one on each side), a pitcher of lemonade and a few cups filled with it, and a wicker basket on the other side with just one plastic egg sitting inside. There is a sign on the table as well:]

Advice: 1Gil
Lemonade: 1 Colored Plastic Egg

[She hasn't set up a lemonade stand in a while, so she decides to give this second go-around a bit of a twist. While she's waiting, there is a thick book being read, and it seems that she's near the end of it.]
