SeeD Field Exam

[Under the radar just a tiny bit this time had been the announcement of who the SeeDs to assist in the exam were to be. After the announcement SeeDs Lina Inverse and Espio had been given their mission briefing. The candidates for the exam, on the other hand, would only be briefed on the day, and had two days to prepare.

[Finally, the day to prove that they too could be the pride of Balamb Garden was here.]

[Maria had not slept at all last night, but to look at the girl you'd never know that. She holds herself rigid as a board, her cadet uniform in such immaculate shape it's almost better than knew. Her twin gunblades are in their holster on her back, with her rifle slung below and parallel to the right-hand one.]

[She's ready.]

Hey there stranger.

[Cissie smiles as she approaches Maria. Although she's dressed in her Cadet uniform, which feels weird since she rarely wears it, with her bow and quiver swung across her shoulders, she still looks slightly nervous.

It's not that she's not capable - because she is - but it's weird for her to think that after today, she'd be graduating.] You look more prepared than I do.

[Maria glaces around, concludes that the exam has not yet properly started, and thus that side conversations are still acceptable, and so grins.]

All my life for years has been leading up to this. I'm very, very ready.

[Her eagerness is endearing. Cissie's worries melt away a little as she nods in agreement.]

I can't say I've prepared as long, but this should be fun. If it's anything like the missions I went on back home, at least. [She's still taking it seriously! It's just hard to be surprised after living in both superhero land and Garden for so long.]

Just be careful that you stick to the Code and proper standards of cadet behavior. That's very important.

Also, if we see a dog in trouble, we need to save it. I'm not exactly sure why that's relevant, but everything I've read indicates that it's essential that we do so.

Huh. The dog I can do... it's the proper standards of Cadet behavior I'm worried about. Back home, you didn't have to follow proper protocol as long as you were doing the right thing.

Well, Garden has appearances to keep up, too. SeeDs are professionals, after all. So just look like you're cool and elite, and everything else should take care of itself.

[Of course, Maria knows the Code and intends to live it, but she doesn't expect the same of Cissie. Amazingly, her time at Garden has actually mellowed the fanatical girl who stepped through its doors a year ago.]

[Ronnae had taken her time to go over her studies a week prior and do a refresher course the night after. She figured she could use a good sleep and relax before the test as it was better for her to feel rested than anxious.

With that in mind, Ronnae still woke up plenty early and had a good,filling breakfast. With her spirits high, Ronnae didn't take long to reach the appointed location in full gear and ready to get things done.]

[Once Ronnae arrives, Lina's already there - and tugging a bit at the collar of her uniform. It looks nice, but it can be terribly uncomfortable. Or maybe it's just a dislike for being enlisted like this coloring her judgement.

Either way, once she realizes the half-orc is approaching, Lina straightens up a bit, and does her best to look professional and teacher-ly. A bit tricky to do with her short stature, but she makes up for that with sheer confidence.]

Morning, Cadet - it's good to see you're up and ready.

[Lina has nothing to worry about stature as Ronnae's isn't imposing in the least!

Ronnae notices and quickly stands attention and salutes.]

Morning, it would be unbecoming of me to arrive late to the Field Exam ma'am.

[Still just a bit taller than Lina, though!

Lina waves a hand, dismissing the salute. It's far too early in the morning for formalities.]

At ease - good to be on time, but better to be relaxed while you can, so you do better.

[Ronnae relaxed a bit and nodded, she smiled a bit sheepishly before speaking.]

Apologies... I guess I'm just used to a more harsh and strict chain of command.

But I agree, being at ease helps you keep a level head.

[It was hard finding the initiative to get up for the exam. Nepeta hadn't really been feeling enthusiastic about anything since her moirail had been taken away, but she knew how pissed off Vriska would be if she let all her hard work go to waste.

So it was for her that Nepeta got up, dressed up impeccably neat and arrived at the front gate]

Good morning, Nepeta!

[Maria, of course, is all energy and visibly struggling to contain her excitement.]

[She lifts her head a bit when she hears someone hailing her. When she sees who it is she manages a smile and raises her hand in greeting]

Hi Maria! Feeling ready?

For some years now. I'm not sure I slept at all last night!

Well you're almost there! Soon we're going to be graduates and official SeeD members. [She held up a hand for Maria to high five]

You've really wanted to be one for that long? When you'd first figure out you wanted to be a SeeD?

{Checking to make sure no one will dock them points for the gesture, Maria returns the high-five with a smile.]

You remember reading about the Commander -- er, Commander Leonhart's, SeeD exam, right? The Dollet liberation? That was when.

[Cid, clutching a mug of coffee, comes bustling towards everyone from Garden, accompanied by a faculty member. Before he starts talking, he passes his coffee to the faculty member; when he's not looking, the faculty member takes a sip of it.]

That's everyone, right? [His eyes find the SeeDs, then he does a quick headcount of the cadets.] Good. I hope everyone's doing well this early morning.

[He's given this speech so many times before, but he still believes in every word. His SeeDs have been proving him right for years. As he speaks, he walks back and forth, looking at each and every one of the cadets and SeeDs here.]

This exam will involve five members. You will be proceeding to a real battlefield, where the battles are for real. Life and death, victory and defeat, honour and disgrace... Each of these go hand in hand. There's only one way or the other. [He pauses to look each of the cadets in the eye.] How 'bout it? Are you still up for it?

You will be accompanied by three SeeD members... [Cid nods to Lina, Espio, and an NPC SeeD.] Should you fail, these members shall get the job done. They always do. [He smiles reassuringly at the cadets.] Well, that's one less worry on your mind.

The pride of Balamb Garden! The elite mercenary force, SeeD! Learn from them, obey their commands and accomplish the mission. Prove yourself worthy of becoming a member of SeeD.

[In Maria's mind only one possible answer exists: She salutes.]

[Get used to it, this is exactly what she'll be doing for the entire exam.]

[She's never really talked to the Headmaster before, so she can't help but be surprised by his seeming sincerity. Surprised, but inspired and it actually lifts up Nepeta's mood. She owes a lot to this man, they all do in a way, and so she decides to put her own troubles aside and live up to his expectations.

She joins the others in their salute.]

[To save OOC time, we have an NPC SeeD to give the mission briefing. As soon as each member is seated on the Ragnarok, he begins, wasting no time in doing so.]

For your exam we will be heading to the Shumi Village on Winter Island in order to assist the natives there with a problem that has come up. The normally peaceful and helpful Shumi have recently been plagued by very peculiar robberies, the things stolen typically nothing of any value. That, however, is not the reason for us becoming involved in this incident. There has also been reports of their prized statue of Laguna Loire being defaced repeatedly despite attempts to prevent it from being harmed further than it already has.

There are no solid details as to who or what might be responsible for this other than a single description of two seemingly human men as well as the word "dragoon" being found on the statue. We have no information on their appearances, where they come from, or whether or not these actions are meant to be truly malicious.

However, due to the possibility of the unknown in this mission we have brought all of you together to dispatch of them if they prove to be hostile.

Any questions regarding this briefing can be directly asked to myself or to your other accompanying SeeDs.

[Well, at least Espio didn't have to give the briefing. If he had, it would probably have been peppered with flavour text about Trabia's climate and accompanied by a highly unprofessional rant. Honestly, why had he agreed to this - two trips to his least favourite place on the whole planet in the space of a month? He could be lounging around the lakeside if he wanted, but nooo he just had to come and supervise this ~~girl's day out~~ exam.

Opinions formed thus far: Maria is slightly terrifying, and oh noooo Mikuru is taking this one.

At least the Shumi Village itself was apparently warm...]

[Lina, however, is more vocal about her thoughts, sitting with one leg crossed over the other at the knee and arms folded. Her expression is clearly one of annoyance and disbelief.]

Ahhh, going to help the Shumi deal with petty thievery and graffiti? Really? It'll test detective-skill at least, but really... Did we just have a shortage of suitable missions for this kind of thing?

Do I have to grade you, too? Because there's some attitude points to dock there. A mission is a mission, and it's bringing in money for the Garden.

Don't get complacent. We're dealing with the unknown, so anything could happen.

[He neglects to add the "I hope." He kind of agrees with Lina - thievery and graffiti? That's the kind of stuff he pulled as an idiot kid.]

[Lina sighs, then folds her arms and slouches a bit. Sometimes, she wondered if this whole military thing was worth the trouble, but income is income - Espio's got a point. An annoying point, but a point.]

Yeah, yeah, I know - but it isn't my hide on the line here. I can criticize it a little.

[The mission seemed pretty straightforward if anything. A simple recon and assess mission was always welcomed as it was both relaxing but with the possibility of bringing more to the plate when unknowns where involved.

Even so, Ronnae didn't really have any questions at the moment and simply kept to herself for the trip. Waiting to see what was going on once they arrived.]

[That definitely wasn't the sort of mission she had been expecting, but oh well. Why complain, right? There would be more in the future. Nepeta took her place by Ronnae and gave her friend a smile]

Excited?

[Ronnae smiled warmly and nodded.]

Very much so, even if the mission is a bit simple. Then again, anything can happen right?

[Nepeta nodded]

Considering how little infurmation there seems to be I would definitely say so. Either way it's nice to get out of the Gardens fur a bit. I'm glad fur the oppurrtunity to see more of this world.

[Ronnae smiled and nodded,]

It is, isn't it? I've always loved traveling, one of the perks of being in the military I suppose.

And this world seems really varied. At least a lot more than my own home was.

It really is, I'm glad to have a chance to learn and explore more about it.

I miss home but... I suppose being able to enjoy another world isn't all too bad I think.

[Mikuru, looking slightly rumpled because she's actually wearing her Miracle costume underneath her cadet uniform (it didn't work quite as well as planned), doublechecks her bullets for the thousandth time. Her second time on the field exam, and it's with some of her friends and Espio, whom she just had as an instructor? Oh, help.]

Shumi Village doesn't get a lot of human visitors, right? [She thinks she remembers that from geography class...] You would think people would remember them better...

I don't think it's necessarily about being remembered... it's probably more to do with the harsh environment they live in.

...by the way, if you're trying to layer up, that's really not the best way to go about it.

I just meant how the only details we have are 'humans, possibly male'... I mean, I remembered you because you're the only walking, talking chameleon. [Also because of your charming personality, Espi-bro.

[She blushes, and glances off.] That... wasn't really what I was going for.

[At the appointed time, the Ragnarok descended and lowered its ramps in front of the Shumi Village Outer Dome. Shumi Village is far beneath the ground, in fact; the Outer Dome houses the elevator that leads down to it.]

[The Exam has officially begun.]

[Ronnae was one of the first to leave the ship, eager to see more of this world and get this mission started. Once out, she took a long glance of the area and quirked a brow.

Why did that building remind her so much of the Nerubian architecture... and underground too to boot? She hoped there weren't any hostile arachnid people around... While she didn't share her father's unnatural dislike for spiders, the Nerubians were always a tough foe to face.

Regardless, Ronnae made her way down and towards the building witht he others.]

[Maria follows behind Ronnae in disciplined silence, observing the area as best she could without appearing to do so. Funny how this is her world, and yet places like this are just as alien to her as they must be to offworlders. It rubs in how big the world really is.]
