What makes someone a good leader? Is it caring about the people they're in charge of? Or is it more making sure they can all get out of an impossible situation alive? During those times do numbers count, or is any single loss an unacceptable failure?

And when it comes down to it, how do you know if you're a good leader until something directly happens?

I've always considered my Pops the best leader there ever was, but he was the strongest man in the world on top of caring about all of us. So I guess he had both qualifications covered.

Just curious as to thoughts on it, if you will.

It's achieving the goal that they and whoever they're leading is aiming for. If they don't achieve it, they failed.

In a lifetime people set many goals for themselves or others. It's impossible for all of them to succeed without any setbacks ever, especially when sometimes the goals are mistaken. Sometimes a better accomplishment it simply learning from mistakes.

What then? Can those too always be considered an ultimate failure?

If they have multiple goals, they need to succeed at the majority of them, or at least the most important ones. Stop trying to be philosophical when the answer's perfectly obvious.

Just because someone cares doesn't mean they'll always be strong enough to lead someone in a battle or to safety.

You know I'm not.

All the red tape and the loops one must go through, and all that useless banter. Who needs it! I say, if the person has the experience, proper responsibility, and isn't a complete nut job (but the best of leaders are, alas), then give them the title and respect they deserve.

Of course, the latter part is optional and depends on the person. Each definition of respect differs.

I never really thought about that. The closest I have to a "leader" broke into my house and accused me of being a thief! I really just tag along because he goes to some interesting places, and it's easier to do research when someone else is fighting off the monsters.
