Case 21 | action (happy birthday to the twins)

[About two weeks before, most people who've talked to Damian received this note in their dorms:]

It's Damian W. & Damian R.'s birthday!
Come celebrate with us on the Quad at 8:00 PM sharp on August 6th
Presents not necessary but schway
we'll provide our own entertainment

[So today's the big day. Damian feels so weird thinking about it, especially since it's not just his birthday anymore - it's his twin's too - and he feels like he's got some kind of responsibility to make it special. He's kept the details on the DL, mainly since it's supposed to be small and kind of not made into a big fuss...

But after sunset today on the Quad, he's arranged for some tables and catered food from Balamb proper for a proper birthday! He carefully sets his present for Ahki down on the table of presents before he steps back and admires his handiwork. It's nothing fancy - just a few decorated tables and a birthday banner he got from god-knows-where - but it's better than nothing. Plus, he even got them a huge sheet cake with their names on it!

Carefully, he pulls out a date and breaks his fast - it's still Ramadan, after all. It's weird, seeing the place so quiet, but it's a small dinner with friends (and party crashers) so it shouldn't be too bad. Hopefully.]

While Damian DID say he kept it small, if you've even talked to him once, you were probably invited. Or you can party crash, there's enough food for everyone. :D]

[Marco doesn't have much time, but what kind of friend would he be if he didn't leave them a present?!]

[A present with Moby Dick in comics form & Treasure Island the book for one. And a laser tag set for the other. It's missing some pieces and not completely wired, but hey, he has faith that the two of you will be able to work it out, or probably improve and maybe this-world patent it. It's done in Robin colors. By which I just mean red and black, because Marco is a bird and Robins to him are red and black damn it.]

[No card, but there's a little tag with Marco's tattoo symbol and a quick note in blue ink that he wants to hear all about it when he gets back.]

[aw yeah comics! Day's a pretty happy camper, especially since he's never actually read Moby Dick before (or Treasure Island, for that matter).

[Anytime little buddy! \o/ He might also take note that both of those seem to jive a little too well with Marco's philosophy of revenge and his personal take on piracy at large. ;) Then again, they're the comics version, so it might be more glossed over haha.]

[Danny had still been in the infirmary when he received the invitation and had hoped that he would be well enough to attend.

Two weeks later, he finds that he is just slightly too sick. He feels fine (or almost fine, or almost as fine as he ever feels, which is less fine than for most people to begin with), but the nurses insist that he stay in bed. Eventually he manages to convince them to let him go early for this party--on the condition that he wear a surgical face mask to prevent infection, use hand sanitizer constantly, and come back the very second he starts feeling worse.

Danny doesn't mind the stipulations, because it means he can leave, and go to the first birthday party of his life! Better yet, it's his friend's birthday! He eagerly dons the mask as he gets dressed and heads towards the quad.

He arrives there buzzing with excitement, although it deflates rather quickly once he realizes that presents are customary at birthday parties, and he neither remembered to bring one, nor had anything worth giving.

Uh.

This is a problem.]

[Not necessarily! The second Damian spots Danny, he can't help grinning as he wanders over. He does note the lack of a present, but he doesn't really care - what matters is that Danny decided to come.]

Hey. Did they decided to let you out early after all? 'Cause that's pretty schway of them.

O-oh! Uh, hi. [SHIIIIIIIIII--PRETEND LIKE THERE'S NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT?] Heh, y-yeah, they didn't really want to let me out just yet, but I convinced them! There was no way I was going to miss this!

They just let me off the hook with this mask.

[What's up with his nervous attitude?] Huh. If that's all they cared about, that's actually not half-bad.

You're that Masters boy, aren't you? The klutz?

[who the hell is this kid, he looks kind of like Damian, and Danny knows he's seen him around, but never spoken to him or anything.]

Uhh--y-yes! Yeah. I'm Danny Masters. Um. I-I didn't know I was that clumsy...

[It's Damian's evil twin.]

You're wearing a surgical mask. Clearly you can't go outside without screwing something up.

[Ronnae hadn't known there were two of them! But the times she did meet one of them it had been pleasant at the very least. She didn't know exactly what they would like as gifts but maybe...

It might have been a long shot, but she had managed to get the simple materials needed to craft two of her mechanized companions and made sure to complete two of the mechanical critters before heading out to the room.

She wasn't much for parties, after all social events made her nervous specially if there'd be large crowds, but she figured showing up is the least she could do.

Once there, she placed the two chittering boxes on the present table, looked around a bit nervously and simply stepped back to watch the scene.]

[There's definitely some people by now - Day's invited some kids from his classes as well as people around Garden - but he'd be a bad host if he didn't come say hi to everyone.]

Hey! Ronnae, right? It's good to see you. [Granted, he's not normally this polite, but he doesn't know her super well and manners are kind of important.]

[Ronnae gave a small smile and waved timidly.]

Hey, congratulations. It's good to see you again too.

It's just our birthdays. [He does have the decency to look a little sheepish, at least.] You've met the other Damian, right?

[It didn't take long for Damian to notice the chittering boxes. Picking up one of them he opens it and examining the handiwork. Damian's white kitten--well cat, it was hardly a kitten anymore--hops from his hood onto his shoulder to examine it as well.]

You, [points to Ronnae] did you make this?

[Ronnae looked over and offered a timid smile and nod.]

Yeah, made it specifically for this. They're pretty good companions.

[Dusan (his cat) bats it with a paw, causing it to make noise. Dusan just sort of stares, enthralled.]

This is pretty decent craftsmanship. Do you do much metalwork?

[Seeing all these people here for Bilal is reminding him how he's made pretty much no friends here during his stay, and he's not sure what to think about it.]

You're the girl Bilal admires, right? The one with the bunny suit?

[Reputation be damned, he's gonna call her neesan on his own birthday because he wants to.] Hey, did you see the cake? I made it myself.

I haven't yet. [But she'll start heading over to it.] What did you make?
