[BBS] International Talk Like A Pirate Day

So I don't know how many other worlds have this; if any, but back home it's Talk Like a Pirate Day. While it's mostly used as an excuse to sound like a moron who never brushes his teeth, or had them all knocked out in a bar-fight, it usually works to pick up chicks and get completely drunk. Not that any of you should do that since none of you can hold your liquor like an actual pirate. You're all welcome, however, to try to mimic the pirates you're familiar with and wander around trying to con parrots into hanging out with you.

I even have free eye-patches for everyone who wants one. If you're fast, you can even get a colored one!

You can also use this as an "Ask a Pirate" post for any of your piratical questions.

Eh, like I said. He has to be experienced.

What about the other two names you mentioned? Uh... Rogers and Silvers?

[Rubs the bridge between his eyebrows and gestures for Ryoji to take a seat.]

There once was a man named Gol D. Rogers. He was an idiot. Really I would have felt bad for his first mate if Silvers Rayleigh hadn't brought it upon himself and chosen the moron for a captain. Rogers was a touch insane. He also set out to conquer the Grand Line. My Pops was the only man who ever tied with him in a fight, but Rogers is the only person in my entire world's history to make it to the End of the Grand Line -- which is the main pirate ocean in my world. This got Rogers labeled the Pirate King -- which is a completely worthless title except that it means the World Government, and possibly the whole world wants you dead, although that didn't bother him as he was already dying when he first joined set sail on the Grand Line.

Shanks was a cabin boy in their crew. Rogers was the Pirate King, and Silvers was his first mate. Now Silvers coats ships in Sabaody and keeps -- kept in touch with Pops and us. Shanks went on to become a Pirate Emperor like my Pops and when my crew was rescuing one of our own, Shanks fended off Kaidou who's one of the other Pirate Emperors. He even got to the battle in time to get the rest of us out alive and... [Swallows and chokes up a bit.] Helped me bury my captain and best friend. Something I can't pay back.

He still tries to be too much like Rogers.

[Sitting, Ryoji listens attentively as Marco speaks. At first, he can't help but smile at the way Marco describes the people from his world. By the end, Ryoji has an understanding look on his face. He tries to give Marco a grin though.]

The more I hear about your world and the people in it, the more interesting I think it sounds. Mine certainly doesn't have stories and histories like that. Or if it does, I'm not lucky enough to know anyone like that.

But you do, and that's pretty amazing.

[Shrugs.] Pops was always big on stories about the past, eh. Even when he lived for it.

I guess I'm just lucky to be in a prime position to sit and watch the world change.

Real life stories like that would certainly be better than any bedtime story from a book.

I consider myself lucky to be able to hear about all these events.

Heh, I could probably go on a long time, but I'm not really the story-teller of the crew. Any of the others would be better at it. They're usually more talkative, eh.

That's all right. I seem to bring out your 'inner story-teller' with all the questions I seem to ask you.

You don't mind that I ask you so many questions all the time, do you?

Nope. I think I like it. Reminds me of home in a good way, eh. It's good to have a chance to talk about it, and if you didn't ask me the questions, I never would say all of it.

I'm glad for that then. I think sometimes I ask too many questions, but I won't know if I don't ask, right?

Exactly, eh. Thatch always said if people didn't ask me questions they'd have a hard time just figuring out my name.

You'd probably end up with a lot of nicknames if no one knew your real name.

I do have a bunch, but usually only from people who do know my real name.

Marco's not your real name?

Thatch, Izou, Jozu, Vista, Ace and the others just had a bunch of nicknames for me. But they're nakama, so of course they know my real name.

[Hearing the Japanese word used amongst all the English, Ryoji blinks at Marco. Now, alongside looking confused, he looks vaguely puzzled.]

Nakama? That's a word from your world?

Yeah. For crewmates. Kind of a little stronger than that, you know? Best friends for life. I'd do anything to protect my nakama. Hell, that's all I've spent most of my life doing.

I'm actually familiar with what that word means. It's a Japanese word back in my world. I'm just surprised to hear you use it, Marco.

Japanese? Why? What's surprising about that?

It's the language of the country I'm from. And it's surprising because, other than that word, I've only heard you speak English.

[ooc: *rolls up sleeves* Bring it!]

[Shrugs.] I don't even know what language I speak. Whatever's common on the Grand Line and I guess avian.

And there are just random words in other languages mixed in with that?

It's all the same language to me?

[Rubs the back of his neck.] Let's see... words from my world... Seakings, den den mushi, sailing, flying, fish, whales, Calm Belt, Grand Line, [Shrugs.] They all sound the same to me.

I might not know what any of those things are, it all sounds like English to me.

[Another shrug.]

I don't know what English is either.
