[The Ragnarok lands briefly on the Nectar Peninsula, dropping off the group with nothing more than their Garden-provided packs and a "good luck!" from the pilot and accompanying SeeDs. Centra, we've headcanoned, is in the southern hemisphere of Planet VIII, so it is summer for this field trip. Have fun!]

Mod note: Be sure to be on the lookout as surprises may pop up in the thread. Each group is given one signal flare that should only be used if they require the immediate retrieval by a nearby SeeD squad sent to discreetly watch over them. Good luck!

Since this was Locke's first quarter, he readily jumped at any chance to get out of Garden, especially since so far the Survival Skills course was a cakewalk to him - after all, he'd spent the better part of a decade living off the land on his own, to say nothing of infiltrating places like South Figaro and Vector.

Unfortunately, the one thing no course or real life experience could prepare him for was Time Compression. When he woke up and readied himself for the trip, he seemed a bit different than the night before - a bit colder, more distant perhaps.

Gintoki didn't particularly like the wilderness of his own world, due to plenty of bad experiences , but a wilderness which was populated by monsters which would actively try to kill them just sounded like a pain in the ass. Especially after more than a month with no worries about rent, food or spending money.

    Yay.

"Why do we even have all these supplies?" he muttered, looking over the supplies (and poking them). "Not that I'm complaining, but it's not really 'survival' if we get given a shit-load of food and medical crap, is it? Tch, kids these days, so spoiled. Back in my day, you'd get an apple core to eat and a rusty spoon to fight with, and be thankful for it."

"Well, strictly speaking, no. But I'm sure if there were an actual casualty on a field trip like this they couldn't just not claim responsibility," Twilight answered, "I'm no PR expert, but that would be terrible for their image."

She was kind of glad to be out here, away from Garden. It was closer to home for her... so to speak.

Locke knelt close to the ground, one hand touching the dirt, just...glancing around, seeming to be trying to get his bearings. He had to admit, he was of a like mind to Twilight; being out of Garden was just more... comforting to him, especially in his current condition. Large, organized militaries put him on edge for numerous reasons.

"Yeah, this place is too organized for tough-love teaching. Besides, I take it neither of you are from worlds where 'survival' means 'there are things in the woods that want you dead'. It's not gonna just be some junior camping trip. We're being left alone, away from civilization, in a world that has created para-magic for self-defense. Think of it this way - those things in the Training Area had to come from somewhere."

Of course Gintoki was used to 'things in the woods that want you dead'. He'd just generally been a lot tougher than those things, and he was sincerely hoping that was the case here as well. Otherwise where would he find the time to laze around and make everyone else do the work?

"Let's just find a decent, defensible position and stay there for a week. It's not like we have to go foraging when we've got all this." He picked up his own pack, testing the weight. "Last one to say 'aye' gets first watch tonight. Aye!"

"That's a good idea. There won't be all that much point moving from place to place."

Here, even her own innate magic could still be a precious resource, so she elects to carry her supplies on her back.

    "Aye."

Normally, he might complain at being shoehorned into first watch, but his first thought is 'defensible position', so he acts upon the intent of scouting out, reaching up to a nearby tree branch, hoisting himself up and rapidly climbing the tree. Once he gets high enough, he starts to look around, calling down to the others.

"There's a thicker grove about ten minute's walk that way," he offers, pointing in one direction before pointing to another. "Or a cove that seems to be a monster nest about five minutes that way - easier to defend, but we'd have to clear it out first."

He keeps looking, something about this entire thing gnawing at the back of his mind.

"There must be a freshwater source near the monster nest, so that sounds good," Gintoki mused, running a hand through his hair, before calling back up at him. "See a stream or anything near the grove?"

He spared a glance at the magical pony-horse thing. "Oi, how are you at fighting, if we need to clear the nest out?"
    marearcana: (Helpful Lecture)

"Perfectly capable. I focus more on magic than physical offense, but I have a few tricks for situations where I get cornered as well."

She would greatly appreciate it if you frontlined for her, in other words.
