It's been a while. Nice to see the tech's made some improvements since I've been gone. Those old terminals were a pain. This laptop's a piece of junk, but at least I can take it with me.

Heard there's a bunch of new people since I left. Sounds like an excuse to party if you ask me. Anyone got any bright ideas?

While I'm at it, is there anyone I know left around this joint? You'll be happy to know I didn't go make a fool of myself in the training center this time. Damn dinosaurs.

[It's true. He's not going to go "prove himself" in the training center this time... at least not yet. Not without some magic under his belt anyway and maybe a weapon (or three) at least. Instead he's prowling around pretty much everywhere but the training center trying to see what all has changed since he saw it last. Feel free to bump into him anywhere. He's got his papers in hand so anyone can probably figure out he's new even if they're not familiar with him.]

Can't believe it's been about six months. This time compression stuff is still nuts.

I think a fete of sorts would be wonderful. Perhaps for this Valentine's holiday? Would something like that be appropriate for it? I know there are other events going on that day, but I'm not sure if there is a party planned.

A party for Valentine's day? Sounds kind of cliche, but I'll take what I can get.

Didn't realize there was stuff planned, guess I should have looked around before running my big mouth.

[And 623 is going to literally bump into him, because he's concentrating a little too hard on a map of the Garden. He may look like a scrawny little kid but he certainly doesn't feel like one.]

Ah? [He's more startled then anything] Are you alright?

[Duo's pretty familiar with the phenomenon of scrawny little kids who don't feel like one. Heck, he pretty much still was one, which is why the bump doesn't really bother him that much.]

I'm fine, kid. I'm stronger than I look, something you seem to know all about.

[He glances at the map the other boy is holding and draws a logical conclusion from it.]

You new?

[623 nodded] Yes. Arrived here just a little while ago. For a military based structure, it's poorly arranged. [someone hates going in circles, ok?]

[Wait, papers spied.] You're new here too?

Because straight lines are so much better? At least this way anyone trying to infiltrate their base has a higher chance of getting lost.

[He smirks]

Too many bases have the same layout, makes them easy pickings. This place took me a few while to get straight, that's more than most places can say.

New? [He glances at the letter in his hand and then shakes his head.] Nah, I just got back.

No, straight lines are not better. However, there is a fine line between effective infiltration management and poor design.

[At Duo's next answer he blinks, focusing a little heavily on his conversation partner now.]

Back? So this place has taken you more then once? Distressing.

Pretty sure this building is ancient and they just re-purposed it so the basic layout probably wasn't even their choice.

[Cheer up emo kid. This place isn't so bad.]

Pretty much. Was here for a while, went back to my world for a day, and then next thing I know I'm back here only six months have passed. It's not so bad, don't have anything to do back on my world right now anyway.

[Time Shenanigans, the most mind boggling things in the universe.]

[Line face changes into surprise.] But how is that possible? A day and six months are two very different things...I know we can be taken from different times but...

No. That does make sense.

Makes sense to me. [Duo shrugs.] Time isn't linear, soon as you remember that it's not a big deal.

Time and Time Compression do whatever they damn well want here. No sense trying to apply logic to it, because it doesn't work.

There is always a logic, but sometimes it is illogical to those considering it. As long as it eventually sends me home it can be as illogical as it wants.

Getting home doesn't seem to be a problem, even if it is random. Never know when you'll get home just to get sucked back in though.

[And he's so cheerful about it too. Which makes sense in a way. Not like he had much to do back on his world right now. He's not exactly peacekeeper material.]

You sound awfully resigned to this.

I don't mind being here. The war's over back on my world so there's nothing for a guy like me to do there anyway.

At least there's interesting stuff going on here.

My war is not finished,I have to return to accomplish the mission. This place has enough people helping it.

Doesn't matter how long you spend here, you go back to the second you left. No one back where you came from will even know you were gone.

It's pretty convenient, maybe you should consider this a vacation.

[Huh, Lea doesn't think he's seen that guy with the braid around before -- between that and the familiar letter crumpled in one hand, it's easy to guess what's up with him.

[Looking up from studying a new cafeteria menu, Duo offered the unfamiliar red head a crooked smile.]

What? You saying I look like a newb?

[He shakes his head, smile broadening cheerfully.]

I've been here before. Time Compression has a bad sense of humor even by my standards. Don't think you were here last time I was. The name's Duo. You?

It's the welcome packet. [Lea grins back, holding a hand out to shake. Hey, he seems nice!] I'm Lea! Nice to meet you. I guess you left before I got here or something - it's been about half a year for me....

It's cool that you got to go back home for a while, though.

Seems you get one of those even if you've had one before. You'd almost think they expect you to read it.

[He reaches out and shakes his hand casually. Duo's not a macho bs kind of guy.]

Sounds like you got here right after I left.

Yeah, almost spent a whole day at home before finding myself back here again.

Yeah, I guess I did!

[Lea occasionally gets macho, but not in the trying-to-break-somebody's-fingers way, so he's just as happy with a casual handshake. He blinks at Duo's answer.]
