[Laguna's holed himself up in Esthar, refusing to speak with anyone. That anyone included Kiros and Ward who were stationed just outside the main doors of his offices, one impatient and the other as patient as a wise, old man.

Twisting the chair to face the window, the President of Esthar balances the phone between his jaw and shoulder while it rings, scrambling around for some particular documents.

Important phone call coming your way, Headmaster Cid. On a heavily-encrypted line.]

[Cid lets out a small chuckle as he hears the commotion on the other side of the line.]

Ahh, Laguna! It's good to hear from you again. I've been well, just dealing with a bit of damage control-- nothing too out of the norm.

And what about yourself? Sounds like you're having a bit of trouble there.

[Snatching up papers off the ground:] Oh you know me, always dealing with papers. Papers papers papers. They never listen-- although they never did have ears to begin with, huh?

So! How's my boy doing? And the kids? He's not giving you any trouble is he? I mean if he is, old friend, don't be too afraid to knock him one or two in the head. [He's amused, shuffling his papers, his chair creaking.]

[There's a hearty chuckle at Laguna's words.]

Oh I'm sure that won't be necessary, Laguna-- Squall is a great help. The cadets really look up to him. [The latter is said with a touch of pride.]

The others are going fine, as well. I'm sure they'd be happy to see you; perhaps we'll have to make way to Esthar one day. An educational field trip for the new cadets? [He isn't too serious about this, and it's evident in the way he adds on a laugh.]

[This is where Laguna falls quiet, as if mulling over his thoughts on the matter. When he finally speaks his tone is quiet and serious. The humorous side of Laguna Loire is completely put aside.]

Cid. We need to talk.

[Cid was more than aware that Laguna's call was more than a simple excuse for chit chat. He leans back in his chair then and takes a deep breath.]

Yes, yes we do. Things with Galbadia aren't looking too good, are they?

I've tried every damn trick in the book. Nothing's working.

I've tried bribing. I've resorted to threatening, which- yes- I do understand probably wasn't the smartest of ideas. I've even tried to persuade Galbadia with the idea that should they sign the treaty, I'll resign.

[A quiet sigh.]

Nadda. Nothing. Zip.

[Cid gives a thoughtful hum.]

They seem pretty firm on their standing. [A heavy sigh could be heard from his end of the line.] Unfortunately, I don't think the incident down in Dollet triggered by one of our cadets could have helped matters.

I take it you haven't been keeping up with the news then, huh?

I've been a big bogged down dealing with the matters in Garden, so there may be some things I've missed lately. What has been going on?

The likelihood of the Gardens going to war is pretty high up.

I'm trying my hardest to stop that from happening - it's the last thing we need right now.

[Laguna drags a hand down his face.]

This Time Compression isn't helping anyone; it almost scares me to think that Ultimecia is really back. That history's repeatin' itself.

Time Compression still remains a mystery; from the last reports we've received from Dr. Odine, there hasn't been much progress in research. But perhaps we shouldn't be so surprised by Ultimecia's possible presence in our time now; with the arrivals of all these people from different worlds and dimensions and time, it's entirely possible that she has washed up along with them. She is the one who initiated it, after all, and I have no doubts that she will take any measure possible to stay alive.

[He gives a sigh.]

We must be alert and keep an eye out for her, try to contain her before news of her presence breaks out.

If news hasn't already gotten out. Which it has. At least here in Esthar there's somewhat of a panic going around.

It'll give us a chance to catch up, and a chance for me to make up some lost time with my boy.
