[Marco is wandering around campus about to do Disciplinary Committee Rounds and whistling to himself. As he whistles, occasionally a few birds come and land on his head or shoulders or arms and whistle and tweet back to them. In fact, by all appearances he appears to be talking directly to them. Still he continues walking around, deadpan as can be, as though there was perfectly nothing strange about being surrounded by a bunch of birds asking why he has to be out so late and are phoenixes related to owls, and hey where's that loaf of bread he promised? They've got babies to feed you know!]

So long as you hush when I'm sneaking up on someone you can have a hotdog too, okay?

[One bird keeps tweeting an objection to this. She doesn't like hotdogs.]

Fine, you can have fruit.

[This seems to quiet her down.]

[Someone's coming back from the training center, spear in hand and wiping her forehead with a towel draped around her shoulders. When she sees this tall man covered in feathery rashes all over his body, she unsuccessfully tries to stifle a laugh.]

[Whistles calmly to them so they don't instantly take off in fear.]

Eh, it's not hard. [Pets a few gently on the head.] They were keeping me company back when I first got stuck here. Reminds me of home.

[She'll stay a little ways away, well aware that if birds don't try to kill her, they're probably frightened of her.]

I see. Do they have names?

[Tilts his head to the side and deadpans various names... completely in bird-language of whistles and calls.]

They're hard to translate.

... it's... alright. They'd probably lose a lot of charm in translation anyway. [She's giving you that look again that says she's not sure what to make of it but, hell, she'll go along with it anyway.]

[He's gotten quite used to that look over the years.]

Mm. They're basic bird names for bird concepts, eh? Things like spring, or early dawn, or night shadow, or beauty, or air currents. [Looks like he's off in another world for a moment before he sends the birds off to perch somewhere else.] Just come from the training hall?

Oh. [Have a look of surprise. That sounds a lot more... amazing than she gave them credit for. After a moment, she smiles contentedly again. The world, even one not her own, never ceases to amaze.]

Yeah, just taking a break from all the books. What about you?

[Grell wasn't one to listen to rules, let alone curfew. He is actually outside, writing in his diary under the moonlight when he hears singing.

Specifically birds singing. At night.

Grell goes to investigate and LO AND BEHOLD! It's Marco surrounded by birds. Not so surprising now.]

Mm-hm. I was just whistling when they decided to join me.

[A few of them take off because Grell is kind of terrifying, but a few are brave enough to stay since Marco is still calm and relaxed at least.]

[It's weird to see so many on a person. A bit creepy, even. Not that Grell minded that. He watches a few fly away, tilting his head to the side at the others that remained.]

I'm surprised they're up.

They wanted to know why I am. Besides, this is a nighthawk. [Also why it didn't fear Grell, being a predator himself.]

There's a lot of birds like the ones at home. Not all of them though. I guess some of the evolution patterns are similar, but with my world, the islands section pieces off so each island has species onto itself usually. Creates a lot more diversity.

[Holds the nighthawk up towards Grell carefully where it tilts its head and clicks it beak saying something to Marco.]

Because here's Sokka, laying on the ground and staring up at the moon. He's half-asleep, still half-dead from being sick, and somehow not where he should be though maybe he doesn't know it yet.]

[And this was why Ryoji liked to wander around whenever he got the chance. He never knew what he could possibly see and experience unless he went out to look for it.

Walking up to Marco, his footsteps silent so as to not disturb the birds, Ryoji smiles. If it's not normal for a guy to be talking with birds... Well, Ryoji had heard that people sometimes talked to animals, so it wasn't that odd a though.]

[He makes a small realization about something before giving a small, self-depreciating laugh.

Though I maybe should really figure out how to get my hands on a weapon of some kind before I take another trip inside alone. But you'll be there to protect me this time, right?

Ah. Is it really that late? I hadn't noticed. For some reason, I always seemed to feel more energetic around midnight than any kind of exhaustion.
