[Fionna gives him a disbelieving look, with a wet Namur dripping all over her]. Are you joking? Why the heck are you gonna want a mouthful of bones with your fish?!

Bones got lots a nutrients an' shit in 'em, Kelp-for-Brains! Calcium or somethin'. Also what gives a fish that satisfyin' crunch when y' bite down on 'em. Listen.

[He takes the spine, lays it across his teeth and chomps, his razor teeth splitting the bones into shreds. It does indeed make a loud, probably sickening crunch.]

Hear that? Almost good as music.

Cooking a fish RIGHT is gonna give them a crunch! Anyway, maybe you forget but I haven't got teeth to just be chomping down on bone pieces! My teeth are messed up as it is!

[To demonstrate she opens her mouth wide, showing Namur her decidedly buck front teeth].

[Just like a little rodent. Namur cups her cheek and runs his thumb along the edge of her teeth, feeling his gut drop and his face flush as he suddenly thinks about what it'd be like if she used them against his throat. He leans in, breathing her scent, then coughs a little and drops his hand abruptly.]

Seem a'ight t' me. Least they ain't loose an' fallin' out an' shit.

[Oh hey look, here's some kelp that needs to be washed. He'll just. Do that right now. Yeah.]

[OK, WOW. There was just sort of wondering what the heck she was doing, and then there was what he just did, cheek cupping and all. Her face reddened, an automatic reaction to having him touch her outside of their usual banter. Crud, was she starting to like him again, even knowing...

[Yeeah, you do that. Fionna will stay a tomato, smoking the fish].

[A freshwater stream isn't far off, still close enough to talk while still affording some space while he works his brain out of the mush.]

Kinda like a big rodent, but, like, they're actually useful. They make dams in rivers and stuff. They're pretty cool.

[It doesn't take long to wash the kelp so when he comes back and has nowhere to put it Namur squats on his toes and holds it out across his hands.]

Mean, pokin' out like that in the front makes it easier t' bite an' tear shit, don't it? Maybe yer jus' evolvin' t' make yerself more useful.

People just laugh at you, mostly.

[She never liked it, but she tried to brush it off, even if she did feel a little slighting].

Yeah, maybe! I wouldn't risk it though wouldn't wanna break me teeth off!

[She didn't, mostly. The teeth were just something she thought about sometimes: even she knew that they were a bit out of the ordinary].

[Namur snorts and rolls his eyes.]

[He moves like he's going to punch her arm, but at the last second remembers he's holding the kelp for her to keep it clean.]

You can crunch through bones, man. That kinda goes without question!

[She held out her hand for the kelp].

I'm gonna clean 'em, maybe put them with the fish in a kabob or somethin'.

Thought y' was makin' sushi.

[Is that a mischievous twinkle in his eye? Is it?]

[It is.]

[Congratulations. Fionna now has kelp "hair" draped over her bunny hat.]

I am! But I'm seeing what else I can d-hey!

[She picks some up and hops atop his head, arranging it like a wreath. Fionna is fast.

Sheheh I already got a shitty crown durin' Homecomin'!

[Namur slides the kelp-wreath off his head and wraps it loosely around Fionna's neck.]

Makes a damn fine necklace though.

[And by "damn fine" he means ugly as hell, even by Fishman Island standards.]

Oh, you know you love that crown!

[But not the kelp crown: she knew that looked silly. Even the necklace she knew looked bad. Cake would have hissed just looking at it around her neck].

Does it actually taste any good?

[Not commenting about the crown. He kind of tossed it on a bookshelf and forgot it was there, except when he sees it sitting there and he takes a moment to wonder if it means anything or if he's just being a dumbass.]

[Namur shrugs.]

I'll eat it from time t' time when I need somethin' it's got an' the fish don't. Try it an' tell me.

[He lifts one of the leaves and mushes it against her mouth.]

[Oh, it meant something: she was trying to be cute and a pain at the same time].

[She took a mouthful and chomped, then made a face and spit it out]

BLEAUGH! How can you eat this stuff by itself?!

Tastes fine t' me. Guess we're jus' made different that way.

[Namur tugs on the rest of the leaves so they fall off from around her neck. No point in leaving them there to make her cold.

Shit Fi, how come y' didn't bring a jacket or nothin'? Even I'm wearin' long sleeves!

[Nevermind that he always wears long sleeves... for all the good it does when they're soaking wet.]

Yeah, I guess. You can eat weird green stuff.

[What exactly did you call lettuce, Fionna?]

I figured the sailing stuff would be enough. If I wore sleeves and fell in the water, it'd just weigh me down. It is gettin' kinda cold though.

It's the middle a winter Jellybrain. An' it ain't like y' gotta wear a shitty uniform jus' t' go sailin'. Y' can wear whatever the hell y' damn well please.

[Granted, the middle of winter just up the coast from a balmy tourist town isn't anything incredibly noteworthy, but still.]

[Cake might actually kill her for this. Fionna sometimes needs a parent.]
