[ He's new still, but you may have seen him. He did have a punishment round on his very second day, after all. Though Jet laid out of the first few days of his classes, citing his concussion as his excuse, he's attended at least a few of them, and he just has one of those faces. Very tanned and boy-next-door, not unpleasant and not one-in-a-million. You may have seen him. ]

[ And you may see him now, as he's scouring the girls' dormitory looking at the name placards beside each door, laboriously trying to read the "sounds" written there. He's not yet to the second floor but is making his way toward the stairwell, deep in concentration.

It doesn't for a moment occur to him that only girls are supposed to be in the girls' dorms. ]

[ Ohhhhh. Caught. He looks up from where he's squinting at a name placard. ]

I, ah. Well I was just.

[It seems as though he really did intend to be in the girls' dormitory by the way he's scrutinizing all the placards. She frowns slightly; boy, Jet sure did work fast. Has he already met a girl? Not that it mattered if he did-- she wasn't going to get jealous or anything-- after all, it's not like he ever had any real feelings for her--

Katara keeps her expression neutral, though there's a slight edge to her voice when she speaks:]

Are you looking for someone?

[ Jet sighs, shrugging and lifting both hands in a helpless gesture. ]

You caught me, Katara. I was looking for someone.

[ When his eyes open, a grin breaks across his face. ]

I was looking for you.

[Well then.]

... Oh.

[There's a brief silence as Katara averts her gaze to brush her dark locks over her shoulder -- her signature hair loopies are back -- then shift the books in her arms. Finally, she looks back up to him.]

What do you need me for?

[ It's reassuring to Jet that she's ditched the fire nation attire and hair style. Upon first seeing it, he'd been confused, to say the least. ]

I need to talk to you...but not out here in the hall.

Well...

[The glances around the hallway-- no one's there. Katara is pretty sure that the boys are meant to stay out of the girls' dormitory, but it seems like whatever Jet wants to talk about is important.]

We could talk in my room, but I'm not sure if my roommate's there. Or we can go talk in the Quad?

[ He shrugs again, taking a step toward her. ]

It's up to you. Though, I know how you feel about us getting in trouble...

[She can't help but get a bit huffy at his words-- after all, it reminds her of the whole incident with Toph and her brief stint with gambling.]

I just don't want us to get thrown out of here, especially after that fight!

[There's a sigh before she motions him to follow her.]

Let me put up my stuff in my room then we can go talk in the Quad.

Sure.

[ Again, that grin. And hey, in this empty hall, she has to know it's all for her. ]

Say, which one is yours, anyway?...I'm just curious.

[Katara notices the grin, but turns away quickly to lead them to her dorm. It might have caused a slight blush to creep on her cheeks, but it's not like he really affects her like that anymore-- no, not at all.

Up the stairs they go-- her dorm room isn't too far, just a couple of doors down from the stairwell.]

It's number 203.

[When they reach the door, she swipes her card and waits for it to slide open.]

Is your head feeling better?

[ He nods, putting his hands on his hips in what, from most other guys his age would seem like a pose, but comes across as natural movement for Jet. ]

Earth Kingdom sons are built sturdy.

[She tries to smile at that, but it comes out halfhearted; that wasn't what she witnessed from Jet the last time she saw him in their world, in her time.

The room is empty when she enters, and she quickly places her books on her desk before returning to the door.]

Okay, let's go.

[ He gives her an imitation of a courtly gesture, or what he assumes is a courtly gesture, waving her on ahead of him with a sweeping motion of his arm and the inclination of his head. ]

After you.

[The gentlemanly gesture from Jet is much appreciated, especially after having to deal with the rudeness of Zuko the night before. So she gives him a wide smile before she moves walks past him, taking the lead as they make their way to the Quad.]

How have your classes been? [It wouldn't hurt to initiate some small talk, since it seems like whatever Jet wants to discuss needs to be said in private.]

[ He shrugs, but she can't see it. ]

I really only started going yesterday, and they're all busy reviewing for those tests or whatever.

[ That sounds a little too careless, not responsible enough... ]

But I was reading through the materials while I was in the infirmary for my head. It looks like they've got a great system here.

[His latter words pleasantly surprise her-- Katara didn't think he'd really care too much about the education system here. She glances back to give him another smile, and an enthusiastic nod.]

It's really something different, isn't it? All the stuff they teach here. I can't believe that anyone can use magic-- it's like everyone here has the opportunity to bend elements.

[ And that does interest him greatly. ]

At first, I thought that sounded unnatural. Only benders can bend, right? This system seems to bypass the natural talent, the spiritual connection to the element.

[ No one in his gang had been an earth bender, but he knew how bending worked theoretically. ]

Even though we won't get credit for it, I think I'll go to class next month anyway.

[She nods, but there's a brief silence as she contemplates something she had been told in class.]

But, the method to use such magic... having to 'junction', and the risk of losing memories? It seems like a high price to pay.

There's no price too high if it helps me liberate Ba Sing Se and the rest of the Earth Kingdom, Katara. Not even my life.

[ The gravity of his words is much greater than the lightness of the tone with which he utters them. ]

[And that makes her stop dead in her tracks. Katara whips around to face him, her eyes wide as her mouth drops open as if she has something to say: but no sound comes out. There's a few more seconds of this odd gaping before she averts her gaze, arms crossing and expression falling.]

You shouldn't say things like that, Jet.

[ He isn't sure what prompted that reaction, but there's no chance in hell he's gonna forget it. For now, he tucks it away for later analysis. ]

Katara...I was kidding. [ He tilts his head and holds his arms askew, in a way that could be apologetic or the prelude to a comforting hug, depending on her reaction. ]
I'm sorry.

[Her eyes shift upwards at his words, and she takes in the sight of his apologetic stance. Rather than to fall into his arms for an embrace, though, the sensitive topic causes Katara to hold back. Instead, she tries to give him a small smile, but it falls flat-- how can she pretend that his words are a joke, when they're real?]

... I know.

[And with that, she suddenly turns around to start walking again, glad that they're nearly at the Quad now.]

[ He'd been nearly certain she'd go for the hug. More perplexed by the situation now, Jet drops his arms and follows silently until they're near a bench. ]

[Thankfully the Quad is empty for the most part-- it seems like the students have taken to retreating to their dorms or the library to study for midterms. When they approach an empty bench, Katara sits herself down before shifting slightly to face Jet.]

So, what did you want to talk about?

About something he said.

[ It's obvious from Jet's tone and the set of his brows just who he's talking about. ]
