Hey everyone. Umm... I kinda have a question for all of you.

Just how common is it for a cadet to basically, well, accidentally end up with four majors? Not four declared ones, but I was looking over the major requirements and the classes I took so far and what I'm planning on taking...

Well, basically, by just taking classes I thought were interesting in addition to the ones for the Martial Arts and Para-Magic specializations, it looks like I have three of the five classes for the International Business one already. And I'm taking WRT-201 because I figured learning that would be cool, but I only need another class in that and two in the International Business, and the Advanced class for Paramagic and then I'd be all set for all of the majors.

It's kinda... really weird. I mean, I wasn't even a super-studious student back home either. I wonder what happened...

There is a lot of redundancy in the prerequisites. I've heard distantly that electives used to be capped based on what your declared specialization was, but if so that was a long time ago.

I have eight myself. But I'm something of a fanatic.

Yeah, I really noticed that now that I'm looking. I mean, I can understand why both weapon specializations would have similar ones, and that half to the electives for each major are basically "any you want" it's not hard to see how I could end up with more than one. Or Two.

But that I can easily have four of them seems kinda unbelievable.

SeeDs are intended to be very versatile, after all. But just because you meet the requirements doesn't necessarily mean you want to specialize in it. It's not just a statement of competence, it's also an attitude.

Hmm... that's a good point there. I mean, I guess even if I complete the requirements for that International Business Specialization, I'm not sure if I'm going to want to be going out and talking to clients instead of being in the action.

Exactly. I went with as many specializations as I could because, well, fanatic again. I'd gladly do any and all of them. If you'd rather be in the action, then stick to the action ones. There's no shortage of need.

... Yeah, I don't think so.

If I was a prodigy my grades back home would've been a lot better, for one thing.

Maybe... then again, the classes are a bit harder than back home, so maybe I'm just working harder.

I don't know if it's common, but in your position I wouldn't just go "okay, I'll be all of this." I'd stick to what I like. Versatility is important, but I don't wanna be stuck messing with computer science when I want to actually fight.

Yeah. I've been thinking about that too... I mean, I spoke to someone else.

I'm... probably still going to take the other two classes though. Only because this only happened because I thought the other ones were all interesting.

But yeah, I'd definitely need to think more about what I want to do here after I graduate before deciding for sure. I mean, I'm not like my brother who enjoys fighting, but I don't want to sit around when others are doing work to make a difference either.

Whatever the cause, I think it's a sign of a well-balanced curriculum. Getting a lot of exposure to different subjects like this gives a lot of opportunity to someone without a good sense of what they like to discover something they love.

I already know what that is, but even then it doesn't mean I can't find other ways to apply it, or use what I've learned in classes outside of my specialization requirements to enhance my life in other ways.

Yeah, I guess you're right about that. I mean, even people who train in punching things need to know about a lot of other stuff too, right? Even if it's not required for anything, stuff like Economics and Psychology is probably still good things to have an idea of how it all works.

Exactly. And more than that, they're either encouraging or implicitly requiring that SeeDs have or gain a wide skill set.

Yeah. And it makes sense too. I mean, SeeD is supposed to be a pretty prolific, elite mercenary force. Of course we're going to need to know lots of stuff for whatever missions we end up doing.

Speaking of, I do wonder why they only want us to concentrate with one of the advanced magic classes though for the Para-Magic specialization. You'd think they'd one someone who specializes in that to know as much as possible, right?

Well, the cultural paradigm I'm from affords me a perspective on the matter that might be useful in answering that.

I have a friend back home by the name of Rarity, and she works as a fashion designer and clothier. You might have caught a glimpse of her a couple months ago when the rate of offworlder flux was much higher than normal.

She's a unicorn, like I used to be, but all her spells were at least in some way related to her profession. Now, obviously para-magic isn't all that much like unicorn magic but it isn't too much of a stretch to assume that some people only really excel at one branch of para-magic.

just kidding. seriously though i thought the idea of majors was something you liked doing, not just something you have the requirements for

Yeah, that's what a lot of other people have said too.

Though I guess it might depend. I mean, the fact that I could easily get four majors done here scheduling wise is kinda odd. It's not something that'd ever happen at University where I come from. Though with four years of school instead of around one, I guess it makes more sense that there'd be tons of stuff required there.

well, this isn't a university, it's a mercenary school. the point's not learning, it's making people earn their keep as fast as they can, esp. with sponsors paying for us. other schools here are more than one year i think - sometimes in town you get the odd college student whining about their third year assignments - but this isn't one of them.

how'd you pick your majors?

Yeah. I know. Besides, I think that people who are actually from here spend more than a year studying too, even as part of Garden.

As for picking my majors, well, it was kinda easy. I already had a little martial arts experience and my abilities from back home can be used to make me physically stronger, so that part was a no-brainer. And considering how Para-Magic is used for junctioning and everything, it makes sense to learn more how to use those too.

And also, come on. Magic. Shooting fireballs and lightning out of your hands and being able to heal people with spells? How can you not look deeper into those when given the chance?

I'd say more than a bit. But it happened. Somehow.

I mean, I don't think I would've actually completed all of the majors if I didn't realize what had happened. But it's still kinda weird that I have that many of the classes.

Yeah, I guess so!

It could've been a lot worse though, I could've ended up with my brother's, after all.
