[It probably comes as no surprise that there's no angry BBS reaction to the homecoming nomination from him. Zak knows EXACTLY who the guilty party is. The angry diatribe is going to be delivered STRAIGHT to her door. And so, off to the girls' dorm he goes, to the door of one Maria Cyphert.

He pounds on it, then crosses his arms, seething, until the other cadet opens the door.]

Just what were you thinking?

(OOC: Feel free to watch or interject in the fireworks, this isn't exactly a private place he's going off in. XD)

[Mikuru doesn't know who nominated her, and doesn't really care - she's just here because she forgot something at Maria's.

[She almost turns back to her own dorm when she sees who else is here (man, advanced martial arts must have been awkward for at least a week after he asked), but decides to hold her ground.]

... What did she do?

[Mikuru probably would not be surprised to know that at least one of the guilty parties responsible for her nomination was standing right in front of her. Not that Maria probably hadn't had a hand in it too...]

Nominated me--probably nominated us--for Homecoming Court, in an attempt to "help". [Yep, can almost hear the quotes around "help", even if he wasn't making quote-marks with his fingers.]

I had no idea she had such a following, though. Uh. Though I was going to nominate you anyway...

[Yeah, HE thinks Mikuru deserves it.]

[That idea has her briefly looking at Maria's door like the girl's crazy (which... yes), but as Zak confesses he was going to nominate her, her gaze slides sideways.]

I nominated you too, actually...

[One can almost hear the screech that Zak's brain makes, and he makes a face. A confused face, at least.]

What? I--you won't go with me to Homecoming, but you'll nominate me for Prince? How does that work?

[Can she just bury herself, please? Dealing with a guy she's meant to be protecting is so much easier than dealing with a guy who's interested in her.]

I didn't say I wouldn't go with you; I said I'd think about it. [You didn't quite say that either, but, details.] I... I thought you deserved to be Prince...

[Yeah well when you think you're a tough guy you just don't come out and say stuff like that...]

I was kind of nervous, I never did that sort of thing before. Ask a girl out. To anything. [Because, well, he's a dummy.]

[He shakes his head.]

What'd I ever do to deserve that in your eyes, huh? I mean, I'm not surprised you got nominated at all.

[Mikuru fidgets with the hem of her blouse rather than meet his eyes. Hearing he hasn't asked anyone else out makes her feel worse than before.]

You saved me in the training center. You work really hard [from what she's seen when they've had classes together] and you're still willing to help other people ["me"] out. You're fun to hang out with.

[Also, you're cute. But she's not going to say that; she just shrugs.]

[Not sure how to react to girl he likes listing off what she perceives as his good qualities. Then again, he asked. So Zak is also fidgeting, now. WARNING: TYPICAL BOY ANSWER INCOMING.]

I suppose those are good reasons. Better than Maria's, at least. "To troll you, Zak, tee hee!"

Or she nominated you because she's known you longer and knows even more good things about you than me.

[Damnit, Zak, you are a cool person!]

We didn't know each other for that long before Dollet got invaded. Plus we were both pretty young at the time, you know? People change. I feel like I changed, and not for the better, thank you not at all, Galbadia.

[His expression does soften a little, though.] I'm kind of surprised she remembered me, really. We were both small when my parents died, after all.

Maria got a headstart on knowing you... and you're hard to forget.

[Oh. Uh. Hey, floor. How you doin' today? That's great to hear, Mikuru's good too...]

I'm not sure I buy that. I mean, yeah, she did, but I know who comes first in Maria's heart.

[Yeah, he's going back to the old joke of Maria and gunblades. Well. Someday he'll grow up, but that day is clearly not today. But the fact that his hand is firmly entrenched on the back of his head probably means he's just as uncertain as she is.]

No, we took out all the nominations for inanimate objects. Someone nominated a hotdog for Homecoming King.

[Completely casual. This actually happened. ~~Damn those NPCs.~~ Mikuru's life is too weird for her to make anything up any more.]

That doesn't surprise me, with this lot. Well. We had that sort of thing back over at Galbadia, too. [Word got around.]

Though that was definitely prankster work, and faculty kind of looked down on that. So, yeah.

[A small smile, and a nod.]

I'm not planning on campaigning, anyway. I'm leader of the group running this thing; it doesn't seem fair.

[She arches an eyebrow.]

I was thinking I'd nominate you for Homecoming Prince.

Clearly, I wasn't the only one who thought that, though...

Yeah, and I don't know what any of the others were thinking either! What the hell have you even been saying while I was back in Galbadia?

[Because of course this has to be Maria's fault somehow, she knows him best, at least in his mind.]

I almost wish I was back there! At least there I knew where I stood. [Except not really, Zak, you know you hated it there!]

You do not and you know it. Why is this such a bad thing, Zak? You DO realize Mikuru is a Princess candidate, right? If you both win...

Right, against that cute little blonde girl? What world are you living in, Maria? [Because he's heard Rapunzel's name before, but he hasn't made the connection. Oops. Also, what is confidence? Zak has no idea.]

She panicked, Zak. That's all. I know you may find this hard to believe, but she hasn't exactly had a ton of guys lining up to date her. It's strange and new for her.

[He just stares at Maria for a few moments, lips thinned, then shakes his head.]

I suppose I can believe the panicked part, but no guys lining up to date her? That I can't believe. Can't believe that--actually, wait, I can believe no one's asked you out. Only because they probably believe your one true love is your gunblades.

[He's probably joking. A little, at least.]

It's true, Zak. [About Mikuru, not the gunblades thing.] Aside from there being not a lot of guys around who are eligible... No one's asked her out all the time she's been in Garden. You're the first. And...

[She looks left, then right, then tugs Zak a bit inside her room for a little more privacy.]

You know she's not super-confident, right? Well... she failed her SeeD exam, Zak. When you asked her, she was about as low as she could be.

[Well, you could hit him in the back of the head with a 2x4, and he probably wouldn't look more stunned. Maybe a little, before he dropped, but...]

I can kind of believe the guy thing. Especially since I don't have a high opinion of my own gender. [Especially after Galbadia.]

But...ugh. Do you think you should even be the one telling me this? I can't imagine she'd want that spread around. [Especially since that comment has gotten all his protective instincts up, and none of the things crossing his mind to do would be the *right* thing to do. Of that he's sure.]

If it stops you from freaking out about being shot down, then it's for the greater good. Besides, anyone can do the math. She's been here for longer than a year, she signed up for the last exam, she's not a SeeD yet...

[Maria shrugs.]

The point is, she wasn't at her best and you caught her by complete surprise. It's only obvious to everyone ELSE that you're doe-eyed over her, for her it totally came out of nowhere.

What, you mean you guys didn't have girl-talk about me? [He has to smirk a little bit at Maria at that.]

I thought that's what you did. Or did you get distracted by your first love?

[Of course then the joking demeanor dissipates and he rubs a hand over his face and into his hair.]

[She reaches out to slap a hand on his shoulder. Half comfort, half a firm grip.]

You're not going to freak out about this, that's what. You want to know girl-talk, well, I asked Mikuru who WAS on the list of people she'd want to date if she were going to date, and you're on it. So you're going to rest assured in the fact that she didn't turn you down for ANYthing about you. She just panicked. And you are gonna be calm, patient, and understanding, because she's worth being calm, patient, and understanding for.,

I'm not sure that means much, Maria. Easy to say when I'm not around to actually put the gil where my mouth is, right?

[Not exactly freaking out, but...Bitter? It's like the old Zak is rearing his ugly head, maybe. He doesn't say anything more, but it's pretty clear he's frustrated.]

Except you are around. This was after you asked her. And since you're still here...

[She reaches out to put a hand on her friend's shoulder.]

You want to date her, right?

Well, yeah, that's kind of a dumb question, since I actually sort of tried to ask her. [Even if he totally sucked at it. He has no grace with this sort of thing.]

So how do I fix this? I don't even know. I mean, I figured I'd just...not necessarily play like it never happened, I don't want to do that, but...make it like it wasn't a big deal.

It is, but it isn't, if that makes any sense? I want to date her, but if she doesn't want it or is freaked, I'll back off.

You don't need to "fix" it, Zak, you just... [Argh! She runs a hand through her hair, trying to gather her thoughts.]

You asked her, she panicked, so just -- you're right, write all that off, forget it ever happened, okay? If you bring it up she'll just get all self-conscious and flustered. Now, at least, she's been thinking about what you asked her, so it won't go bad next time.

Maybe offer to take her for some food or something after the Carnival, because I'm sure she'll be exhausted and hungry after it?
