[In the quad, Aladdin is peering quizzically at the translation necklace. On his shoulder his pet monkey Abu looks at it with him, making a disinterested noise.

Chances are most people won't be looking at the young man or the monkey though. That persian rug which is floating in the air beside him and somehow managing to look curious is much more attention-grabbing, after all.

Aladdin hasn't put on the device yet, so when he speaks it's in Arabic, not English]

So what do you think, Abu?

[Abu natter's away in a tone that suggests he doesn't think much of the device. Aladdin grins and shrugs in response]

Hey, as long as it works. [He puts it on and spreads his arms, facing Carpet. Suddenly, his next words come out in English] How do I look?

[Neither Abu nor Carpet understands English, but they seem to guess what Aladdin means. In response, Abu huffs his disapproval - but Carpet seems like like it, giving Aladdin a cheerful salute with one of its tassels]

[Aladdin scratches his head. Sounds like an odd kind of class, to him] Like circus acts? Street performance? I didn't know you could take classes in that.

Not that kind of acting. [Heaven forbid she ever teach that!] More like... Being someone else, and making other people believe it.

You teach people to spy? [Aladdin looks at her in surprise, and Carpet also gives looks noticeably surprised as he flies about about a foot]

[She smirks.] More stage acting - performances - but my class can certainly lead to spying.

Huh - sounds interesting! [Aladdin grins. He's still getting used to this 'school' thing, but maybe that one is a class he'd like. After all, it couldn't be that different to fooling people on the streets, could it?] I never knew you could have classes in acting. What do you think, guys?

[Abu puffs up and strikes an 'actor' pose, chattering away in an affected manner, while Carpet somehow manages to mime what looks suspiciously like a monologue spoken to a skull.]

[How precious. She laughs, particularly at Carpet's Hamlet impression.] Unfortunately I don't really teach pets [animals just get roped in as stage hands sometimes], but they're welcome to sit in on my classes.

[Abu rolls his eyes and humfs, while Carpet slumps a little. But the rug picks up a bit once Sharpay says that they can sit in]

I'm sure they won't mind. [Aladdin grins, but then his expression changes to something a little less confident] I don't know when I'll be able to take your class though.

Well, I teach the Monday, Wednesday, and Friday drama class. I'd recommend you start next quarter, though; we're pretty near the end of the current quarter and there's a lot of material to catch up on.

Yeah, I guess I'll have to see. [Aladdin still seems just a little bit down though. He doesn't know if he'll be able to read by then, and from what he's heard he needs to be able to read to do a lot of classes here.]

Is there a problem? [Sigh Sharpay always has such small classes...]

Problem? No, there's no problem. Why would anything be a problem? [Aladdin puts on a grin, and Carpet facepalms facetassels threadpalms threadtassels]

You tell me; I'm not the one acting like someone just spilled something on my flying carpet. [With her apologies to the carpet in question.]

Hey, don't worry. Everything's fine. [Carpet floats behind him, and does a complicated series of cherades that mimes someone trying to read something but not being able to]

Mm-hm... [Later on, Sharpay will WTF playing charades with a flying carpet.] Mm-hm... Oh.

That is... really awkward. [She wouldn't have any idea where to begin teaching someone how to read.] I'm sure the English teachers should be able to help you with that.

Huh? What do you...[Aladdin spins around, looking at Carpet with an accusatory glare. Carpet shrinks back, caught out in his miming act.] Carpet! [Carpet gestures at Sharpay with a tassel, in a way that suggests that Carpet thinks Sharpay needed to know and that pretending he could read wouldn't get Aladdin anywhere]

[hotpinkwhirlwind]

[She shrugs.] Look, I'd rather know and try to sort something out for you than just get my hopes up that you're interested in my class and then have you never turn up.

{Aladdin pauses]

...You want to help me out?

[hotpinkwhirlwind]

I can't help you personally, but I can find someone who can.

[doyoutrustme]

[Aladdin looks at Abu, then back at Sharpay. He grins.] Hey, if you can find me someone who can teach me to read, I'll definitely join your class.

what a shame the ESOL teachers are NPCs...

[hotpinkwhirlwind]

[She smiles back.] I'll see what I can do.

Alas! Though there could always be a student tutor, maybe?

[At this, Aladdin looks incredibly relieved. He might have been trying to put on a confident front, but the fact that everyone here seemed to be able to read but he couldn't had worried.] Thanks, I really appreciate it. Back in Agrabah my fiance was going to teach me, but...well, I ended up here.

[Wait, what, this guy, who looks to be around her age, has a fiancee back home and Sharpay can't even get a steady boyfriend?! WHAT IS THIS, WORLD.

[In the real world, she just sighs sympathetically.] We all had plans before ending up here.

[Aladdin looks at her, concerned You must have a lot you miss from home too, huh?

[SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN. She just nods, not really willing to open up to some student she just met - she barely even opens up to her friends about this.]

I'm just lucky that my dog came with me. [She smiles.] I don't have to miss him.

Hey, that's great! I know I don't know what I'd do without Abu... [Carpet flies around Aladdin, and he laughs] ...and you too, Carpet. Your dog must be happy to be here with you too.
