[In the quad, Aladdin is peering quizzically at the translation necklace. On his shoulder his pet monkey Abu looks at it with him, making a disinterested noise.

Chances are most people won't be looking at the young man or the monkey though. That persian rug which is floating in the air beside him and somehow managing to look curious is much more attention-grabbing, after all.

Aladdin hasn't put on the device yet, so when he speaks it's in Arabic, not English]

So what do you think, Abu?

[Abu natter's away in a tone that suggests he doesn't think much of the device. Aladdin grins and shrugs in response]

Hey, as long as it works. [He puts it on and spreads his arms, facing Carpet. Suddenly, his next words come out in English] How do I look?

[Neither Abu nor Carpet understands English, but they seem to guess what Aladdin means. In response, Abu huffs his disapproval - but Carpet seems like like it, giving Aladdin a cheerful salute with one of its tassels]

Yeah, we're new. Can't say I've heard too much about this place so far. [sure, he'd been given two books, but since Aladdin couldn't read he didn't have a clue what they were supposed to say] But anywhere with free food is alright with me. [and Abu too, who is nodded his own agreement eagerly]

The cafeteria's great. [He grins.] There's this one guy, um, what's his name, Champloo -- get him to give you stuff! He's an amazing cook.

He'll probably end up, you know, talking about food and stuff forever, but it's worth it.

So, uh... it's a school, you heard that much, right? Sort of a military school, they teach us fighting and magic and all kinds of other stuff. Depending on what you want to do.

A cook, huh? Hey, if he's giving it away, he can talk about food as much as he likes. [Abu nods his head eagerly in agreement]

A fighting school? Sounds like a strange kind of school if you ask me. Does this mean they want us to join the military?

Yeah, I know he teaches home ec here, but I don't know if he's a cafeteria chef too.

[He shrugs.] It's sort of like a mercenary thing, I guess! It's called SeeD, and anybody who graduates becomes one, and they have these paid missions that graduates and stronger students can go on....

'Home ec'? [Aladdin gives Lea a curious look. That's not a term he's heard before.

Carpet flies around, agitated, at the mention of mercenaries. Aladdin's also looking just a little bit concerned too] I'm not sure I like the sound of that. What kind of missions are these?

Yeah, like cooking and stuff? I haven't taken it so I'm not sure!

Well... [he tosses Aladdin a conspiratorial grin.] I figure I probably won't be stuck here for two whole years, so I haven't paid too much attention so far! Whatever I can learn before I end up getting sent back home again is just a bonus.

So people aren't usually here for that long? [That would be a big plus. The sooner he goes back home, the sooner he can get back to Jasmine]

I guess it depends! Some people get stuck here for years, but some people go back right away.

[He runs a hand through his hair, grinning sheepishly.] It's been about... five months, I guess? -- since I got here.

Guess we just gotta hope that we're not here for long, huh?

You must be used to the place by now.

Yeah, I guess so! It's not that bad, but - [he shrugs, glancing away in embarrassment.] It'd be better if I knew I could go home.

Soon, I mean. Not when I'm twenty.

Yeah, exactly! [He brightens immediately at the question.] I've met plenty of great people here -- most of them are really nice.
