What kind of challenges does Garden's training center offer precisely, anyways? Oh, nevermind, I'll just go find out myself.

[ACTION]

[While many still found themselves flummoxed over the recent change in Balamb Garden's policy via its new commander Jin sidestepped the furor with a newcomer's ignorance, not having been here long enough to become attached to any status quo. The training center provides a unique respite from the politics of the day, the dense foliage and winding passages providing just the right kind of isolation the cadet often preferred.

He swiftly found he was not by himself, leaving a trail of beaten creatures in his path that'd be easy enough to follow. He currently stood in a clearing with a few of his latest victimsw, resheathing the Katana he naturally wielded with a clean motion. He had to admit-live training against monsters was one thing the NOL Academy in his world hadn't offered. He was grudgingly impressed.

Except...]

Barely a sweat....is everything here this weak?

[He probably hasn't met the T-Rexaur yet.]

Well, it is a training center.

[So says the girl who's nudging her way under one of the trees that arch over the path, a nervous smile on her lips. Over her shoulders poke the swept-back grips of her two gunblades.]

For people who don't have a lot of training or experience, the grats are tough.

[Jade eyes glance aside at the girl's encroaching presence, tension slackening in Jin's limbs when he realizes its another student. So much for solitude.]

Easy training won't help me improve, but I guess these would be fine for a beginner.

[He looks again over the slain bodies of the insectoid creatures, brow slightly raised at what she'd just called them.]

So these are Grats? They can't be the only things in here.

[Maria practically lives here -- especially now that she's furiously trying to work out her frustrations and hone her technique.]

They aren't, no, but the T-Rexaurs are very tough for a starting student. Heck, I'm even still a little afraid of them.

[Jin isn't the sort to get frustrated-'annoyed' is perhaps a better term for what happens to him-but the relative seclusion and mindless ease of combat still proved cathartic. He considers Maria again...those weapons she had were another curiosity of this world.]

I was about to graduate from my own world's military academy when I arrived. I'd hardly call myself a starting student, even if I do have to go through bring a cadet all over again.

[He doesn't seem happy about that part.]

I've never heard of these T-Rexaurs either. What are they?

Giant lizard monsters. About three times as tall as a person, and much longer. Big enough to bite you in half, and incredibly strong.

I'm surprised they keep something dangerous on school grounds. Isn't there any concern about them escaping?

(Still, it does sound like a challenge...)

I'm sure most of the SeeDs or Instructors would be a match for one. And they're weak against Sleep paramagic, so if you have some or it's Junctioned...

Ah, I'm still learning the ways magic work in this world. It's quite different from my own.

[Jin's unseen shoulder Tsubaki reminds him he ought to have introduced himself by now.]

I'm Jin, by the way. Jin Kisaragi. Are you a native?

Maria Cyphert. [A bit self-consciously, she offers him a hand -- self-conscious because said hand is attached to a forearm that looks like it has the raw muscle strength to crack walnuts.] I'm from Dollet, if you've learned enough about our geography to recognize that yet.

[There's not much Jin flinches from, and Maria's Olympic Gold Medal Shotput-winning arms won't be making the list today. He shakes with a firm, if somewhat non-committal grip.]

I've managed to see a few maps. I believed that's on the western continent?

[Well, they're not very... y'know. Feminine. So kinda embarrassing.]

Yes. If you were here for our last quarter break, it's where Garden docked for the duration.

No, I'm a relatively new student. This is my first quarter here. What about yourself?

I'm sorry you missed it. It's a good city.

This is my fourth quarter, actually. I'll be taking the exam soon. [She laughs, but it's a nervous laugh.]

To become a SeeD right? I've learned enough since coming here to understand how that process works. Do you know what kind of mission you'll be doing?

[Jin was rather blaise about becoming a mercenary, himself. The Kisaragi were widely regarded as mercenaries anyways by the other noble families...]

Nope. We need to be prepared for pretty much anything. It'll almost certainly include some combat, that's about all I can be sure of.

I wonder if i'll be able to view the operation in any capacity as a cadet. It'd be a valuable experience to see the kind of challenges I can expect when it's my turn to take the exam.

I suppose you could always request it, but I don't think it's common. Really, it depends on what sort of mission Garden gets that'd be suitable, around that time. The one I'm most familiar with is when Dollet hired Garden to help repel the Galbadian Army when it invaded.

So do you want to know or don't you? Make up your mind.

I found out myself. Quite a menagerie in there.

Isn't it? Just be careful if you run into the T-Rexaurs. They're a real pain in the ass.

I didn't wind up running into any of them, though I did learn about them. Are they the most powerful creatures we have?

Yeah. If they're all too tough no one would go in there to train.

[It's not often Cissie's in the Training Center, but she does recognize a new face when she sees one! She heads over to where he is, though she grips her bow just a little bit more tightly.]

Have you met the T-Rexaurs yet? They're kind of ridiculous.

[Jin is not generally wo inclined to to simply up and introduce himself, but he does acknowledge Cissie's approach politely, noting her bow. A long range fighter.>

Not yet, no. I'd be interested to see one though, people seen to make quite a big deal about them.

Your world has dinosaurs, right? They're just vicious and really strong. I try not to face them if I can help it.

[She holds out her free hand.] My name's Cissie, by the way. I don't think I've seen you around before.

Had them, I supposed. Many of my world's animals went extinct during a calamity, but they'd been gone even before then.

[He eyes her proffered hand briefly before taking it kind.] Jin Kisaragi. I am relatively new here.

Kinda wish they were extinct around here. [She wrinkles her nose.]

Nice to meet you, Jin. Liking Garden so far?

I was enrolled in a military academy on my own world, so the transition hasn't been as sharp for me as it might be for others. Many differences remain, of course..

[He sighs as if troubled.]

I was about to graduate and go into the military, myself. Now I suddenly find I have to start all over again. Learning about a new world is interest, though. How do you feel about this place?

[Alhough she didn't say it, he assumes she must be an off-worlder as well.]

That kind of sucks. [She snorts, since she's able to relate in her own way.] On the upside, at least some of the classes're repeats, so you should be able to breeze through them.

[She shrugs when the topic shifts to her.] Garden's pretty cool. It's different from home, but I've been here long enough that it's started to feel like home in its own way.
