003 - Hope! [Action]

[Hope is inbetween his morning and afternoon classes. He's got his books in his bag, with a crisp new pad of paper with incredibly neat handwriting just visible where the cover has not fallen over the lined paper in a straight line. Hope is looking up at the sky with his eyes closed.

It had been an interesting thing being back in a school environment. He'd never really thought he'd miss it as much as he did. There were new people to meet, schedules to keep and lots of interesting thing to learn. It had been a rough time recently in his life, he was glad it was starting to resemble something normal, even if it never would be.

Hope pulls out a little laminated card from his pocket and looks down at it. He had Political Science, Sociology and Tactical strategy left to go for that day. He smiles, stands heading towards the cafeteria for a bite to eat.]

Oh, a lot of this is my own reading!

[Hey, there's a free table. She makes a beeline for it to drop her books down heavily, then spreads a couple of the ones from her hands out.]

There's nothing that says I can't read ahead and get some extra learning in. I know book-learning isn't the same as actually going out and drawing a spell out of something but it's sure better than nothing, right? Besides there's a lot of stuff that we just don't have time to cover in classes, but is worth learning anyway.

... I understand a little bit of extra reading, I mean... I took my Biology teachers advice and grabbed a couple of texbooks. But... isn't taking them all with you everywhere kinda pointless?

[He suggests, moving over to grab a sandwich from the fridge before moving down the line to pay for it.]

I mean, we don't get that much free time in between classes.

[She follows him to grab her own sandwich, not feeling much concern about leaving her stuff behind. It's Garden, who would steal it?]

I'd rather have it with me than have to run back to the dorms. And this way I'm ready for anything that comes up!

[And she just kind of liked the image of being a super-serious studier and knowledgeable girl.]

[Hope tapped his pad on his shoulder bag.]

Anyway. We have Political Science next right? [He sighs.] With Raines.

[She blinks at him. THAT is more bizarre than him being an off-worlder. And possibly more unforgivable.]

What's wrong with Instructor Raines?

I guess. My friends told me he changed... But I'm not sure. But I was rude to him when I first saw him when I came out of the infirmary. I guess it's just awkward, him being my instructor and all.

[He really is going to and try to avoid the REASON he was rude if possible.]

He was very nice to me when I first got here. Even if he is REALLY tall.

[Hope sees that frown and he sighs.]

He... wasn't nice to us back home.

He doesn't seem bothered by you too much. Not like --

[She looks around, then leans in to drop her voice conspiratorially. And she has no idea, Hope, and will be very embarrassed when she finds out the truth.]

Instructor Farron. She always struck me as really strict and maybe a little easy to irritate, but fair. But in class she looks like she's an inch from bursting a blood vessel! And it can't just be my fault this time!

She's a little high strung... But I don't know her that well.

So, have you started the Political Science reading?

I like the text book. It's got those definition boxes and the diagrams. It's helpful to have a a visual example even if the explanation is simple.

[He starts munching on his sandwich.]

I made some notes on the next few chapters too. Just incase we have to link it forward and back in class.

Oh, can I see? I was never good at note-taking, it always seems like everything I write down ends up one giant jumble on a page...

[Hope hands his precious pad over, flipping the top page for her so she can see how his notes are laid out. There are boxes for important information, page references and carefully copied quotations and explanations on the page.]

I'll admit, my notes don't stay this detailed throughout the term... but as long as I have the basics in detail like this I can just add them across.

I'm not sure what would happen in the middle of a fight that would mean I'd need to know political science! So I guess you were in school pretty recently? Since you take notes so well.

Life shouldn't all be fighting though. The political science might even prevent some fighting.

[She's a bit sheepish, both for apparently upsetting him and for her own little admission.]

I know I need to know all this stuff. So that means I have to study it really well.

[He smiles at her. Trying to avoid the negative tide of emotions that are threatening to pull him under.]

[She hadn't read Weapons Monthly and trained under an ex-armyman for years for nothing. Maybe now it can be of more use than just knocking over dressers!]
