[Don't even ask where Espio managed to acquire these, or why he, of all people, has decided to put them up... but as of 5am, the dormitory corridors have been decorated with twinkly fairy lights. As someone from a place where Christmas is A Big Deal (yet mysteriously with no Christianity), the place is just not Christmassy enough, dangit. And when you can't sleep, what do you do with yourself at 5am?

Oh, but it wasn't him. Honest. Somebody else who can turn invisible put them up. Now that the actual morning has arrived, he's just observing them in shock - shock - that someone put flashing lights everywhere.

Now, if only he could convince someone that a tree was a good idea...]

I see the the corridors are suitably blinding for the season.

What's next? Someone gonna start blasting Christmas music through the intercom? Dump tinsel and glitter everywhere? Or maybe haul in a tree from somewhere, I dunno, what other stupid Winter holiday traditions are around?

As long as there's mince pies, I'll put up with anything.

Christmas lights? Is that what they are....? I've never seen them...heard about em though. The only thing I know about christmas is Thatch running around deck with glitter and a stick screaming he's a pixie...

It's rather funny actually. [Laughs as he remembers, then turns his attention to the lights again.]

I wonder who did it...they're certainly pretty.

Someone who didn't have anything else to do at stupid hours of the morning, I'd guess.

[There's a ghost of a smile on his face. Yep, pretty indeed. Sure, the faculty will probably take them down, but it might cheer some people up...]

hmm, speaking of people wandering around in the morning, where were you? I woke up alone.

[Oops. That's the downside of letting people share your room - they catch that kind of thing.]

I couldn't sleep, so I went up to the roof for a bit.

Oh. [Ace shrugs, he has no reason not to believe him]

I'm sorry, I'm a bed hog I know. Thanks for last night...it's been a couple weeks since the last one, but last night hit my out of the blue. I really appreciate you letting me stay.

[Sigh. He didn't mind the company too much, and it was kind of a favour to Marco, but... he liked his own space.]

Well I have to get ready for class. I'll see ya later!

[Offers him a small wave, then turns to return to his room.]

It's lunch when Ace meets up with Espio again. He's tugging at his uniform collar like always as he sits down to eat lunch. Smirking lightly he leans over and whispers]

So, was it you who put the lights up?

Huh?

[Oh. Oh yeah. ...why... has he picked now to come along and ask him?]

Why would you think that?

Because you weren't in bed this morning and I know for a fact you were not on the roof. You got away with it this morning because I was still mostly asleep. It's winter Espio, it's too cold for you outside. [Smirky smirk smirk. He caught you!]

It's not as if I can't go out in the cold.

[Erk. Well, you may have caught him, but he wasn't going to back down without an argument.]

True, but not unless you really had too. So admit it, it was you.

[Then shrugs. He doesn't want Ace to feel like he's got one up on him, after all.]

I agree, so why won't you admit you put them up? [Ace starts to eat his lunch while waiting for the other to answer]

And let everyone know that I actually like something so pointless?

[Typical. Espio just shrugs, brings out his own lunch, and waits for him to wake up.]

[Ace jumps awake a few minutes later and sits there chewing absentmindedly for a moment]

Oh...sorry, I mean I won't tell anyone else, you know that.

It's not about whether people know or not. It's not like it's exactly damaging to any 'reputation' I might have. It's just that... I don't always do things because I want attention.

Espio, no one said you were. I just think it would be nice to get acknowledged when you do something nice for others. I'm not telling anyone else, but I would appreciate it if you were honest in the future. I asked you and you denied knowing anything about it.

Of course. I didn't want people knowing about it. Even family.

[Shakes his head.]

I had a very public role at home. Everyone knew who I was, and everything I did gave someone something to talk about.

[Mostly bad, he reflects for a moment as he chews on his food. Chaotix weren't popular, and most of what they did was subject to criticism, regardless of what had actually occurred.]

After a while, I get fed up of it. I just wanna do something nice because it's nice, and sit and be happy about it for myself without wanting or needing others to validate it.

Oh.... [Well, now Ace kind of felt like he'd kicked a puppy. Okay feelings gone.]

Well, next time I'll try not to say anything and just know it's you.
