003 Multiple chioce.

A: The Quad

[Shelke is drawing. That in itself is highly odd. There is a pencil in her small hand and a pad of paper in her lap. Upon closer inspection , the drawing isn't really a doodle after all. A small set of blueprints sits on top of the paper. It is lightly drawn and extremely elaborate for something a seemingly ten year old drew.]

B: A Classroom

[While all the other students are running around with exams , Shelke is in an empty classroom. She is exempted from the tests due to her late arrival. The young girl has taken a seat on the floor with a computer sitting in front of her. It is obviously an older model that has been out of commission for a while. Shelke has a screwdriver in hand , trying to pry the panel off of the computer.]

[For the same reason as Shelke, Data Riku has been wandering about the school. He had been caught in a hallway when testing began, and everywhere he went someone was telling him to be more quiet so that the other students weren't upset. Thus began a truly epic trek of peering in doors and then running away before someone caught him, hoping to find somewhere quiet to whittle away the time.]

[And he actually did; one of the classrooms he ran across was empty as far as he could see, and... sure enough, the door was unlocked. Dataku allowed himself a grin of success before realizing that he wasn't alone in the room. The presence of a young child somewhere like Balamb Garden was bad enough on its own, but it was the computer in her lap that really caught his attention. Though that could wait for later. He speaks in a hushed tone, working from his previous experience with talking during their exams.]

...There's testing happening now. Can I stay in here until it ends?

[Shelke looks up ,seemingly emotionless. Her even voice greatly contrasts his quiet.]

Be my guest.

[She goes back to tinkering with the computer.]

Thank you. [Instead of taking a seat, he silently kneels down next to her, looking over her work with the computer.And not with the look of someone who is amazed that a young girl could do such things (he didn't quite get the memo that children so young were supposed to be so incapable), but with the look of someone who knows a fair way around the workings of a computer. This one was different from the one back in his world, but that was to be expected, and it seems as if all computers share a vague but inherent similarity. It looks to be a fairly old model, and for that he is impressed, though it begs the question of what she plans to actually do with it.]

Where did you find that? It can't have been bought recently.

[Her lips pull into a small smile. There is subtle change about her. Her tense monotone body language instantly shifts into a relaxed eagerness. It was subtle, but still noticeable. She loves talking about computers.]

I found it. The staff said I could use it , it is an old model. The devices in this world are less advanced than in mine from what I've seen.

[Ah, yes, and there she goes. Perhaps the child was just shy? He thought he had a vague recollection of someone like that, buried away in a memory of a memory. But that was not his life, this was. And he was in the middle of a conversation.] That's what I thought. I... spend a lot of my time around technology like this. Is it broken, or are you just playing?

My life was practically computers... [A spark of bitterness appears in her eyes.]

I want to know how the computers work here. They seem highly simple from the outside. [Waves the screwdriver.] But I need to get inside] to really see and these devices are not advanced enough for me to perform an SND...

...Mine, too. [Okay, so it slipped. But he was watching her face, and... something happened. Did he understand it? No. It must have been the transition to a physical body that spurred it, but a strong urge to share that little tidbit suddenly came up.] But I agree. They do seem simplistic. ...Or maybe the one I was in was just extremely advanced.

Oh! Hello there. Are you not doing exams?

....In...? Did you say in?

[She studies him curiously. Had her ears heard right? she hadn't met anyone that had been inside a computer , except maybe herself. That didn't count , though.]

[ She looks up]

No. I arrived here very late. I'm exempted.

...Yes. In. [Way to go, Dataku.] ...Back on my world, I was just a program. A vessel for certain data when the rest of the system was being overtaken by a virus. Time Compression caught me as that program, and brought me to Garden as a human being.

I was never meant to be human....[She looks a little bitter. Just a little.]

I was supposed to serve as a breathing computer. [Avoiding his eyes , she attacks the computer with her screwdriver again.]

...A breathing computer. [He's not questioning her claim, just repeating it to himself. How would that be possible? Finding some way to synchronize mechanical innards with a human outer body? Mercifully, he has enough sense to know that now isn't the time to ask.] ...How old are you, really?

[She smiles a little.]

I will be 19 in a few months.

My name is Shelke Rui.

Nice to meet you, Shelke. ...I never got a name. Call me Data Riku, until I can find one that seems right. [He returns her half-smile.]

[Even from a distance, he had known a set of blueprints when he had seen them. It instinctively makes his stomach churn, but Artollo doesn't run off. Instead, slowly, he rolls his wheelchair over and just silently looks over the girl's plans.]

It is a pleasure to meet you Data Riku. [She looks back at the computer.]

...I'm not very good with tools. Do you...? [Waves the screwdriver]

[Shelke looks up, feeling the eyes watching her. For a silent moment she takes in the strange looking man.]

Hello..?

I'm not particularly adept with the outside parts of the computer, but I can see what I can do.

I've never had to worry about getting inside a computer. I would just link up and then that was it.

_{[Oh, right, polite conversation. It hadn't even occurred to him to say anything. Social skills, as far as he was concerned, were even less important in... whatever this was, whether dream or illusion.

It certainly couldn't be reality. Not after everything that had happened.]}

I'm jutht looking. What ith it for?

_{[May as well ask, even though he doesn't need to.]}

[She takes his strange speech in stride.]

I am attempting to create an SND link up for the devices in this world. It is proving quite difficult due to the primitive nature of them.

They are rather behind when it cometh to technology. I've noted that too.

How ith it coming along tho far, then?

Not so well. [She looks down at the blueprints.]

I am rather inexperienced in the matters of building computers. Usually people did that for me.

They're complicated, yeah. Tho I'm going to gueth that you're not majoring in them.

_{[Inspecting the blueprints further, he frowns a bit. He can already spot a couple of problems. His stomach twists again, but he tries to think of Signless' sermons from before. Peace. Besides, it's just paper. Paper and ink. Right.]}
