01 in which technology wins
[ It's been at least a couple weeks since Yuri's arrival at Garden. So far, so good. Classes are crap, but he slogs through it. The food is good. There's only one thing...
The greatest hurdle to overcome, by far. The Great Wall to his Huns. The heel to his Achilles.
He sits in a chair turned backwards in a quiet corner of the library. He's seen everyone else doing it, and they don't seem to have any problem...so he should be able to figure it out too, right?
The BBS. Cruel, taunting machine. The screen of the computer, permanently fixed at the menu, mocks him and the keys of the keyboard look like some kind of elaborate puzzle. He briefly considers kicking it, but settles instead for pressing as many buttons as he can simultaneously, to which the computer beeps loudly in protest. He's going to be here for a while. ]

[ Oh. Would that be too mean? Okay, so Fang doesn't laugh outright at his pain. Hell, she's had a hard time of it, herself. Machines were common on Pulse, but computer terminals such as this are taking some adjustment for her. ]
Oh look, now you've gone and made it mad at you.
[ But teasing isn't as mean as just laughing, clearly, so it's permissible. ]
no subject
Hmph...shaddup. It's not my fault it's so damn hard to figure out. Maybe if I just press these...
[ Operation press more random buttons is go. ]

[ She slides into the chair at the terminal beside his, not waiting for an invitation. She's not an expert herself, so she doesn't offer assistance. It seems she's more interested in spectating than tutoring. ]

[ There's no way a broad done up in a toga is gonna know more about technology than him, anyway. He's pounding away at the keys like an angry kid on a forum, which provokes an error message and a 'SHHHHHHHH' from the librarian. ]

I know how to write in little messages on that bulletin, for one thing.
But of course that's not what you're trying to do, is it? Because that's simple enough, even a big rock like Snow can do it.
no subject
Bulletin? That's what it's called? ...

[ She props one elbow on the terminal, inserts chin into palm, then leans over a bit to peek at his screen. ]

[ With the way he's just typing up random buttons... ] Trying to hack into something now?
no subject
D-don't sneak up on people like that! Can't you see I'm concentrating...wait, hack? What's hack?
[ And will it help him figure this thing out. ]
no subject
If you're asking that, then it's irrelevant. Unless you're playing dumb, or you honestly don't know how to work with computers.
[ Considering some of the people she's seeing being from far distant time periods than others. ]
no subject
He huffs at her (mostly correct) assumption. ]
I know how to work with it fine. It just went and did something...funny.
[ By that he means it's completely locked up from his abuse. ]
no subject
Funny being that you just locked yourself from accessing it further, right?
no subject
Huh? It's not locked...it's right there. Look, I don't know what you're talking about, but obviously it just needs a little more of....
[ Aaaand it's back to beating the keyboard until it works. ]

[ Hi Yuri, it's Reno. He's rubbing the back of his neck, looking a bit pained on your behalf before he slumps into the seat next to you. ]
I hope that ain't your answer when you don't know what you're doing with a girl.
no subject
You show me one girl that wouldn't like havin' her button mashed.
[ Know what I'm sayin'? You know what I'm sayin. That means 'hi' by the way. ]

[ Grins. Yuri speaks his language and he likes that. ]
Need a hand?
no subject
Can't seem to figure the damn thing out.
no subject
[ He stands momentarily to swing his chair around, straddling the back of it so that he can lean on it to get a better look at Yuri's screen. ]
no subject
[ He's gonna be disappointed when it's just a BBS. ]

He logged off his own computer before striding over to the male.] Would you like some help?
no subject
Huh? Oh...it's you.
[ Luckily he doesn't hold grudges for minor crap, so he doesn't give two damns. ]
Nothin' to worry about here. I got it.
no subject
[Sits in an empty chair, observing.] Doesn't look like it.
no subject
If you came over to help, forget it. I'm just...messing with the settings, yeah.
no subject
If you keep messing with the settings, then you're going to break it.
[Rummages through his own bag.] You aren't the only one having trouble with these things. [Produces a notebook in triumph before opening it.] Got in trouble for almost deleting the operating system.
[Inside there was a makeshift diagram of the computer keyboard and mouse, complete with easy-to-follow instructions and notes on how to navigate the computer. All handmade by him. Hands it over to the other.] I get how hard it is, but if you'd rather not want my help, at least take the notebook. The rate you're going, you might blow up the lab.
