First Flame [ Action ]

[ Heading down the hall is a very confused and displeased looking teenage boy. He's dressed in normal street wear, has a cat hanging lazily on his head, and sword bag slung over his shoulder. Don't mind the fact that he seems to be talking to no one. ]

What the hell-I'm supposed to be going out to battle, not school!

[ Rin's got his letter of welcome out, and for the last few minutes he's been wandering around the grounds giving it the dead eye. Not even ten minutes before he'd found himself here he was on his way out to fight an incredibly strong demon with his classmates. He couldn't have taken a wrong turn... Did someone hit him upside the head when he wasn't looking and knock him in this dream world? That would be beyond ridiculous. He's had enough of space compression magic to fill a life time. ]

If I'm going to be stuck here [Dream world or not. ] The least they could have done was given me a map so I knew where this Fisherman place is...

[ It just caught him off guard okok. ]

[Yukio turns away for a moment, sighing quietly.]

I know you're trying, but--

[But what? What else could he demand of Rin? Perfection doesn't happen in a day--even his own transformation had taken time. He certainly hadn't gone from being a crybaby to the independent person that he is now in the blink of an eye.

Still, it's his duty to protect Rin now, now that their father is gone--to guide him. It's a load that he bears voluntarily, but that doesn't change the weight of it, always heavy on his thoughts.

Yukio shakes his head and turns his attention back to his brother.]

Just be careful.

Fair enough.

Yes. So best make the most of it.

I guess. So you got one of these letters when you arrived too?

[ Holding up his welcome letter. ]

[ Considering Rin had only just a few months ago found out that his whole life he'd actually been the monster people had called him as a child. Then with the death of their father, and the struggle to prove himself to those around him, Rin had made some progress.

Albeit slowly... he didn't have the best judgement at times, and this was only amplified because of his powers and the danger they were. ]

Yeah I got it.

[ Rin sighs, with the weight of his recent imprisonment still fresh on his mind, and Yukio's small lecture, it was getting harder to stay positive. ]

Ah... no. I came here a year and a half ago. Before they started giving out the letters actually.

[He lets the silence settle between them, allowing it to extend almost to the point of being uncomfortable. But right before that happens, he speaks up--changing the subject to something a little more light-hearted.]

Have you picked your specialization yet? Or your classes?

[Well, light-hearted for Yukio. Sorry, Rin, but he's got to make sure you get your schooling done!]

If not, I can help you pick out suitable courses.

[--and provide tutoring; it's the unspoken promise here.]

[ And he's back to staring at the paper. ]

Which means everything in here is true... augh. Thanks for explaining it to me.

[ They're probably arrived at the fisherman's building by now. ]

Is this the temporary dorm place?

[ Rin's shoulders drop: just one depressing topic to the next. School was the last thing he wanted to get himself lined up for. He was barely passing classes as is back home. ]

No, but I'm guessing you're gonna say I can't just opt out and get a job instead.

[ Not to mention he hadn't found any information on specializations or a course list. ]

... What all do I have to take? This place is a military school right?

[A mildly amused expression crosses Yukio's features. He should've seen this reaction coming.]

Think of it as an extension of cram school--you can specialize in bladed weapons, if you want.

[He makes a mental note to get a course schedule for Rin at some point, but for now, he'll just talk the guy through the general idea of the program.]

Irregardless of what specialization you pursue, there are some compulsory courses you need to take, and a few of them do have a more military feel to them.

[A pause and a considering look.]

I think you may enjoy some of them though.

Well then, it's nice to meet you Rin! My name's Marta, Marta Lualdi.

[ He'll look down to the Kurikara in his hands. A part of him still never wanted to draw the sword again: every time he did someone was hurt. To be able to use his flames for gentle purpose would be the greatest thing he could ask for, but Rin was quickly learning fire wasn't a healing power. It was destructive and easily went out of control. ]

Do I get a loaner sword or something? [ Because he's gonna look real stupid if he can't unsheathe his blade. ]

... Like what?

Oh. Right.

[ Sometimes it's easy to forget that she's not exactly your average joe. ]

Well, there's a first time for everything. Sorry for scaring you?

[Yukio glances at the sword in his brother's hands. Even if Rin could draw it, he's not really willing to let him. Flaming swords? Interesting to look at and powerful to wield, but considering how he's the only exorcist here? He's not willing to risk it if something goes awry.

At his level, he just isn't capable of putting a stop to Rin's power if anything went wrong.]

We'll find you another one. As for those classes... [He sighs and thinks about this for a moment.] Field training, survival skills, weapon usage...

Application classes. You liked those better, right?

[ It's a good thing Rin was next to terrified of using the demonic blade. So for now Yukio would get his way: Rin wouldn't blindly unsheathe it and cause mass destruction, nor did he want to rely on Satan's powers anymore. Even if it had left the elder twin in a less than confident position with himself, it was a arguably healthy change. ]

So long as I get to put my body to use, yeah. [ Yukio's own smile is slightly infectious, because Rin's starting to have to fight to keep his frown. Which Kuro's nuzzling makes all that more difficult. ]

H-how [ Trying not to laugh, swatting at the cats antics. ] how long have you been here anyways??

[Even if it's against the rules, Yukio can't help but find Kuro's antics endearing. He reaches over and gives the demon cat a quick scratch behind the ears as he thinks about exactly how long he's been here.

The answer surprises him.]

Over a year now, come to think of it.

[Which brings up rather odd implications about their ages that he won't... mention unless Rin points it out.

Besides, there's something else that he should bring up--something his brother is probably going to yell at him about once he gets around to saying it.]

Oh, and there's someone else here that you'll probably want to meet.

[ Record scratch. ]

A YEAR???? What do you mean a whole year?! You were just with me at the prison like ten minutes ago!!

[ No Yukio, Rin's yelling now, and disregarding your last statement. ]

[...He'll get back to that eventually.

But for now? Yukio needs to deal with the yelling.]

You read about time compression in your letter, didn't you?

[He sighs.]

I don't understand the mechanics of it, but that's how I've been here for so long already, even if you just saw me a few minutes ago back home.

[ Might be for the best. ]

Well yeah but-!

[ He's looking more confused than he does when taking one of the pharmaceutical tests where he just wrote people's names instead of plants for answers. ]

So that means...

[Yukio had been hoping that Rin wouldn't figure that bit out, but now that he has...

He looks away a little uncomfortably.]

Technically speaking, yes.

A genius...?

[ He did seem intelligent, sure, but that's impressive. Kairi's eyes widen a bit. ]

[ Rin knows that feeling. ]

Y'didn't scare me. [ Much. ]

But we're supposed to be the same age!

[ This argument might sound similar to their previous years of 'but we should be the same size' or 'but we're twins why does Yukio get all the girls??'. ]
