I will again be having open office hours this semester for those who wish to speak or discuss assignments with me.

[There is schedule here with his free hours.]

Feel free to stop in at any time.

[Tseng is in his office, Dark Nation curled at his feet as he corrects papers and reviews notes. He has slightly fewer students than last semester and is... alright with that really.

He's been in a slightly less than stellar mood lately, too many people and too little slaughter to let him vent his frustrations. He was a Turk and there were days the limits of being a SeeD was more restraining than others.]

With the upcoming trip to the Island Closest to Heaven I will be available for assistance and/or last minute training in the firing range.

Do not expect me to hold your hand if you come, but you will learn some skills that will likely be useful.

I will also be available to assist teams on excursions during the three weeks.

[At 0800, the intercom chimes to life.]

Good morning, Balamb Garden. Congratulations to finishing another quarter of classes.

As of yesterday, Balamb Garden has docked as far northeast on the Esthar continent as possible. For those of you unfamiliar with our geography, we have come to the closest point to the Island Closest to Heaven as possible. I am afraid we will be having a working break, this quarter.

Over the course of the break, the Ragnarok will ferry cadets and SeeDs to the Island. Once there, you will find yourself in conflict with the local monsters. You will find these monsters to be almost completely unbeatable; the purpose of this break is to teach you teamwork, perseverance, and tactics in the face of an overwhelmingly powerful opponent.

I will not deceive you: it is also to teach you about pain management and the protection GFs give you against an otherwise mortal wound. You will not come to any permanent harm as a result of these encounters; I, and any other SeeDs who possess the ability to defeat these monsters, will ensure that any person dropped to an unconscious state receives paramagical care immediately. This will merely be incredibly unpleasant in the short-term, as most learning experiences are.

Traveling to the Island Closest to Heaven is mandatory for all SeeDs and all cadets capable of Junctioning a GF. You must travel to the Island at least one out of every three days of the break. That is an order.

To provide some recompense for this misery, all SeeDs who do not possess either an instant-kill attack or an otherworldly power that would essentially guarantee the defeat of these monsters will receive one rank increase for challenging these monsters. Should you succeed in defeating one with at least one team member surviving, all members of the team will receive a three rank increase for their effort.

All cadets who participate in this will receive a 10 point bonus on their SeeD exam. Should any team of cadets defeat a monster with one team member surviving, without the use of otherwordly powers to guarantee victory... we will think of an adequate reward. I promise you it will be worth your effort.

Any SeeDs who have the aforementioned capability to defeat these monsters with comparative ease, please report to my office for assignments.

We will begin at 0800 sharp next Monday. Make what preparations you feel are necessary. I, the SeeDs, and the Instructors will be available for any help or assistance you feel you need.

That is all. Good luck.

[The intercom clicks off, as the Commander returns to her paperwork, awaiting the arrival of the SeeDs.]

[Tseng seems to have gotten himself a somewhat strange looking hound for christmas, it's a handsome black creature somewhat akin to a cross between a greyhound and a doberman with what looks like a second tail that reaches from between it's shoulder blades to well past the end of it's body.

The hound follows along beside him silently as he stalks through the halls of Garden, back in his suit with an icy sort of veiled anger rolls off of him despite the festive cheer filling the building. It's a mood far better suited to an assassin or boogyman than the teacher or simple mercenary he's supposed to be here. It's the barely leashed raw intimidation a Turk is taught to wield in a room from the day they're fitted for the suit they're to be buried in.

The hound isn't afraid of him or bothered at all by his foreboding demeanor, something which may seem a bit off for a dog around someone with that much anger in them. In fact it's behaving remarkably more like a bodyguard than a pet.

Tseng doesn't stop his stalking until he reaches the snowy quad, and it's here that with a quiet motion of his hand the hound runs off to do whatever it is hounds do in snow and he moves to a mostly cleared bench to sit still for a moment.

The problem with not being moving anymore though is that his mind begins to whirl faster.]

[Who's the lady dressed all in dark gray and blue? Why she's familiar....almost. Aerith strides right past people in Garden, her loose (and suddenly short) hair flying behind her. There's no time to stop and sort out her memory: she needs to confirm for herself that things really are as safe as they appear to be. She tightens a dark blue scarf around her neck and steps onto the observation deck, gripping the ledge tightly.]

I'll complete my obligation and then I'll leave. I have no use for this, and it has little use for me. How can any of this be important in the end? In the end, it's still our job to ride the tide. Not control it.

[But she is definitely going to ride the tide back home straight into kicking certain awful people in the face, she thinks, clenching her fist. She glares out into the gray of the day, allowing her anger to start to pass.]

[For some people around Balamb Garden, it's an ordinary day. Others may notice a difference in those people, be it in personality or appearance or the memories they claim have happened, but there are still classes and clubs and missions to get on with despite these odd changes in people.

[One of these things is not like the others...]

Mod note, to reiterate:
  • From December 10th through December 24th, characters may be replaced with AU versions of themselves. This can be any level of AU -- a small change to a world-shattering one.
  • AU characters retain their game memories and CR to the best of the ability of their AU to accommodate it. If you want to sit down with your fellow players and dissect just how your CR would have changed, that's fine! (Here is a place to do so.) But applying the MST3K Mantra is also perfectly acceptable too.
  • Your characters do not have to be affected at the event start, nor do they need to be affected for the entire duration of the event. This way, your regular characters can interact with AUs, your AU can interact with regular characters, and your AUs can interact with AUs.
  • You may use more than one AU per character if you wish.
  • Characters will have their full memory from the AU experience at the end of the event. If their AU ends before the event ends, they can remember it or not as you choose up until the event ends.
  • The event is not mandatory. You don't have to AU your character if you don't wish to.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask on the OOC post or through the mod channels ([personal profile] wrmods or [ profile] witchesreign).

    Hi everyone!

As co-leader of the GFC, I'd like to ask you all what kinds of things you would like to see in our end of year Garden Festival, be it a specific tradition from your world or something broader like a concert. This festival will be a three day celebration, so go nuts on suggestions! (We may use them in future GFC events if we can't cram them into this one.)

What we natives have planned so far is, per a local holiday honoring Shiva, mostly built around being warm and friendly to your fellow man and woman - or pony or chameleon or whatever - by giving time and money to those less fortunate or in need of a little extra help, and giving presents to our loved ones. There will be a school fair for students and staff to sell arts, crafts, and food of their own making which would make wonderful gifts, volunteer work, a feast, and a traditional release of candles on the ocean. More details will be released closer to the time!
[Ongoing poll for the dates here. We're leaning towards the 26th to the 28th as suggested outside the thread but still on that post, but can be swayed if this doesn't work for a lot of people.]

We would love to include traditions from other worlds in our festival and have a truly united celebration, so please help us help you celebrate!

[As the Ragnarok lifts into the sky with its two SeeDs as cargo, their briefer hands out a packet to each of them, speaking as he does.]

Several days ago, a Galbadian squad discovered a cave in the midst of a Centran excavation being conducted by Esthar. Contained within this cave is a device of offworld origin. Esthar, which has retained Garden's services for this mission, wishes to claim ownership of the object.

Esthar's claim stems from their excavation. Galbadia is asserting that as finders of the object, they deserve it. In addition, a third faction has appeared claiming knowledge of the device's purpose and either the ability to operate it, or a -- I suppose 'key' to it, for lack of a better word. Information on this point is sketchy.

The mission is to see the device declared Esthar's property, and if necessary, enforce that declaration. In addition, if you can do so without compromising the mission, find out what it is and what it does.

    Any questions?

[Tobias has mostly been keeping to himself, his studies, and his family lately. With everything that's happened, he's really just wanted to introvert for a bit -- at least as much as he can with the people he cares about. But all this time, a question has been nagging at him. Bothering him. He's certainly not the naive child he was before, but some things he simply can't seem to understand.

Which is why he's turned to Garden for help.]

What makes a bad person "bad?" Is it when they hurt someone? Or destroy something? Or is just thinking about doing that enough to be bad?

And... why do bad people do those bad things?

[And yet, amidst this, there's something else on his mind.]

With the colder weather and longer nights of this time of year closing in, I know that a number of different cultures hold festivals and holidays of celebration, sharing an rememberacne of various origins both religious and not.

I'm curious about what sort of traditions and dates for these things most people are familiar with, as a sharing of our various cultures and a coming together in the spirit of the season could be a welcome opportunity to converse freely and strengthen the bonds we share as members of the Balamb Garden community.

["Commander" may seem a prestigious title or one that requires a great deal of skill as a warrior to lead. In reality, it is a great deal of paperwork, particularly when one has the Garden Master specifically auditing your finances to make sure you are bringing in all profit possible.]

[And sometimes a Commander just needs to relax, and make sure her skills haven't gone rusty.]

[So today finds Zabala in the Training Center. She has four weapons in total -- three curved swords of varying length hanging at her sides, and one two-handed curved sword of the same style slung over her back. As a grat approaches, she casually grips the hilt of the largest single-handed swords, then draws and cuts in the same motion.]

[The grat falls, sliced. Satisfied, Zabala spins her sword in a flashy gesture that seems excessive, but actually serves to clean the blade of fluids left on her her foes, then sheathes it as part of the same gesture.]

[Perhaps not surprisingly, she's really looking for a T-Rexaur.]

What languages do you speak, besides whichever Old language you may have taken or may be taking in LAN 101?

I've found it interesting how some of the 'Old' languages that used to be spoken in some countries on this world seem equivalent to languages from my own world. For example, Japanese and German, my native languages, are much like this world's Old Shumi and Old Trabian. (So if anyone who took LAN 101 in a quarter offering those languages would like to practise their conversational skills or continue their studies, I may be able to fit you into my schedule. Twelve weeks is a short time to learn a language.)

I also ask because if we know how many native speakers there are of other languages, we could suggest that the library supply more non-English language books than just beginners' textbooks and low vocabulary level graded readers. Of course, I understand the library and the foreign language department's budgets may not cover new additions, but it's worth a try.

    Touma H. Norstein

[Inspired by Chika's example of dragging Piyomon around with her, Touma actually has Gaomon out in the open today. Maybe Those Three Girls some of the more xenophobic cadets will get more used to more non-humans around if a SeeD, and their apprentice doctor, at that, has a non-human friend around.

[So here they are sitting across from each other on a bench in the lobby, a 3x3 gridded mat with one card on it between them. Both of them have a hand of monster cards before them.]

Try to play a card with a higher number than those on my card.

These really aren't drawn to scale.

[Touma smirks.] That's a little beside the point, Gaomon.

    Dream event. )

Attn. Students of Classes WTR 302 (M/W/F) and ANAT 101 (T/Th):

I apologize for returning later in the semester than planned, and will be returning to my post as your instructor until further notice.

WRT 302 will meet in the classroom for the remainder of the week.

Tardiness will not be tolerated to any of my classes without a signed pass.

Open office hours are available for discussions.

[ Tseng just really isn't comfortable with all of this. He would say that world-hopping makes him cranky, but he hasn't really done it enough to set a trend. Yet. Gaea, he hopes this won't be a recurring thing.

So he resigns himself to wiling away the hours in happy conference with the directory. Garden is a big, new place, after all, and it would help to know where he's going.

That and staring in the direction of a board looks much better than staring into space while he waits for all of this to catch up with him.
